Best bonsai shears

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want a short decision, not every listing that says bonsai. A star line and a UK price do not say who should leave a pick on the shelf, and a six-piece case at 4.7 is not automatically the best pair of scissors. Best, on this page, means the shape and the cut ceiling match the job, and the steel is one you will look after. Prices and stars are amazon.co.uk figures from 19 October 2026. Peter F. read the listings. There is no lab test. The full grid is on the [bonsai shears comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/bonsai-shears). Best for one indoor bonsai under £15

If you have one indoor tree and want a scissor under £15, the Spear & Jackson 4453KEW is the top pick. It is carbon steel, 100 g, about 20.1 cm, about £7.95, 4.9 from 42 reviews, with pointed tips for delicate bonsai and indoor plants. The maker’s brochure quotes a suggested £8.99 including VAT. Use the listing price. That line is not a lab result. Skip it when you need a printed millimetre ceiling, because none is stated, or if you will not oil carbon steel. One review mentions flash on the handle. Shapes are on how to choose bonsai shears. Houseplants are on bonsai shears for indoor plants.

Best if you will oil one Japanese shape

If you will oil the blade, choose the Wazakura that matches the crown. The satsuki shear, about £39.99, 84 g, 4.8 from 31 reviews, is the fine trim under about 4 mm. Skip anything past that ceiling. The butterfly, also about £39.99, 156 g, 4.7 from 41 reviews, is the outer canopy and has no printed limit. The twig shear, 89 g, 5.0 from 10 reviews, is the slim reach and is not for thick branches. The ashinaga, about £34.99, 200 mm, 4.8 from 45 reviews, has a 6 mm ceiling and a Right-hand field. One UK review says the edge marked above about 0.5 mm. Steel care is on carbon steel vs stainless bonsai shears.

Best for deadheading, not branches

For spent flowers, the Saboten SD-8 is the best value stainless snip: 65 g, about £13.19, 4.6 from 142 reviews. UK reviews keep it on very thin early growth. One says the lock works, and one says the black clip is sometimes in the way. Skip woody branches. The PT-16F is lighter: 42 g, fluorine-coated, about £21.59, 4.7 from 281 reviews, and limited to delicate stems. The coat is for sap release. UK reviews call the clip fiddly, and one reports a blade that snapped after about five months of light deadheading. Both snips are the wrong tool once the stem is woody.

What to skip when the title says bonsai

Skip the vouiu six-piece set at about £63.30 and 1.15 kg, 4.7 from 128 reviews, unless you will use the cutters, pliers, and root hook. One UK review reports rust after a few days on 3Cr13. Skip Kevanry at about £15.99 if you only wanted shears: the 5/8 inch claim is the SK5 pruner, and UK reviews say the handles are a walnut pattern. Skip Aptoper at about £8.99 and Medsuo at about £10.99 if you wanted one shear. A UK review says the Medsuo light pair flexes on harder wood. The KSTE at about £13.09 and 230 g includes a used-arrival note, a seller issue under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and a weak default next to a lighter scissor.

Common questions

Who should skip the ashinaga even though it is the cheapest Wazakura here?
Skip it if you need the listing to say ambidextrous or left-handed, because the field says Right. Skip it if you plan to cut near the stated 6 mm maximum. One UK review says the edge marked above about 0.5 mm. It is still carbon steel, so a damp drawer is the same problem as on the dearer Wazakura pairs.
Is the vouiu six-piece set the best value because it has more tools?
No. At about £63.30 it is a kit: cutters, pliers, a wire cutter, scissors, and a root hook, listed at 1.15 kg. It is only worth that money if you will use those other pieces. One UK review reports rust after a few days. If you wanted one shear, a single scissor under £15 or a Saboten snip around £13 does the cutting job without the unused tools.
Why is a 5.0 rating on ten reviews not the top pick?
The Wazakura twig shear is 5.0 from 10 at about £39.99. The Spear & Jackson line is 4.9 from 42 at about £7.95, and the satsuki shear is 4.8 from 31. Stars are not a measure of how thick a stem the blade will take.
Which shear should you skip for woody branches?
Skip the Saboten SD-8 and PT-16F once the growth is woody. The PT-16F seller says delicate stems and points thicker wood at heavier pruners. Skip the twig shear for thick branches, and do not take the satsuki shear past about 4 mm. Do not move the Kevanry 5/8 inch pruner claim onto the fine scissors in that set. A branch cutter, not a harder squeeze, is the next tool.
What does best mean if there is no lab test?
It means a match you can check on the listing: shape, a cut ceiling you can live with, steel you will maintain, and a review note that says who struggled. It does not mean a safest shear, a lifetime, or a winner’s table. The scores on the main comparison are listing scores from amazon.co.uk stars, review counts, and those limits. They are not a bench test.
