You open the parcel, line up the first pasted drop and find that the paperhanging scissors fold the wet paper at the tip. Or the listing said 300 mm, while the blade is nowhere near that length. UK wallpaper scissors consumer rights can help when goods are faulty, unfit for a stated purpose or not as described. The remedy depends on what was promised, who sold the item and when you act.

Preserve the product page, identify the trader and describe the mismatch precisely. That separates a statutory fault claim from a change-of-mind return.

In short

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods supplied by a trader must be of satisfactory quality, reasonably fit for a purpose you made known and match their description. For wallpaper scissors, that can cover a wrong size or product type, splayed blades, or a tip that cannot make the wet-paper cut a paperhanging description implies.

Your contract is generally with the trader named on the order, not automatically the manufacturer. Save the listing, report the problem promptly and ask for the remedy that applies. This is general information rather than legal advice.

When wallpaper scissors do not match the listing

Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act concerns goods matching their description. The title, bullet points, size chart and other characteristics shown before purchase can all matter. A wallpaper-scissors category does not mean the listing promised every feature of professional paperhanging shears.

"12-inch scissors" may describe the whole tool, not a 12-inch cutting edge. If the listing says "blade length", a much shorter blade is a clearer mismatch. Photograph the scissors beside a ruler, starting at zero, and record overall length and the cutting edge. A small difference does not guarantee a refund.

If the title promised wallpapering scissors but the parcel contains kitchen, hedge or office shears, record the packaging and model number. Our wallpapering scissors comparison shows the long-bladed format used for paperhanging. The top pick is the Hamilton Perfection, listed on amazon.co.uk at about £8.65 and 140 g. Reviewers describe cuts through to the point. Blade length is not stated.

The best wallpaper scissors page names the Harris 12 inch single as the best value at about £4.00. It says 12 in and also 29.5 cm by 7.5 cm, without stating which figure is the blade. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Those comparison prices can change.

"Ambidextrous" can mean a symmetrical handle rather than reversed blades. If the seller promised reversed blades and supplied a conventional pair, quote that promise. An ambidextrous grip alone may still match the description.

When wallpaper scissors will not do the job

Sections 9 and 10 cover satisfactory quality and fitness for purpose. Quality is what a reasonable person would consider satisfactory, given the description, price and other circumstances. A £5 pair is not judged as though it had the finish of a £25 professional model.

A new pair sold for paperhanging should still do the basic job. If the blades do not meet at the tip, or they fold pasted paper on a scrap test, film one short cut in good light. Do not keep forcing a loose pair. Further use can worsen the defect and complicate the evidence.

A particular purpose matters when you told the trader what you needed, such as long cuts through a heavy wallcovering, and relied on the reply. A general wallpapering description does not cover every foil or grasscloth. See the paperhanging scissors buying guide and 12 inch scissors for long drops.

Paste in the pivot, a thick fold or an awkward reach can look like a fault. The guide to trimming wallpaper with scissors explains the normal method. A scrap test is more persuasive than a torn edge from a bad angle.

How to make a clear claim

Save the listing before you write. Pages change, and the order history may show less than the page you relied on.

  1. Save the title, bullets, size, seller name, photographs and your order confirmation, with the date.
  2. Photograph the scissors and packaging. For size, show overall length and the cutting edge separately.
  3. Test only as far as needed on a scrap of the same wallpaper.
  4. Write the order number, delivery date, the exact promise, the problem and the remedy you want.
  5. Keep the scissors and packaging, and do not call a fault "changed my mind".

"The listing stated a 300 mm blade; the cutting edge measures 145 mm" is clearer than "the size is a scam". If the blades stay apart at the tip and fold pasted wallpaper, say that. On a marketplace, check the sold-by line. If the seller phones, follow up in writing.

Refund, repair or replacement

Remedies run in sequence, not as an automatic lifelong refund. The short-term right to reject normally lasts 30 days, subject to when the period starts and any pause for an agreed repair or replacement. Act quickly even if a longer right may apply.

After that period, repair or replacement is usually first. It must be within a reasonable time, without significant inconvenience, and the trader bears the necessary costs. For inexpensive scissors, replacement is often more practical than a repair.

Do not repair the pivot or grind the blades before the trader has had a fair opportunity to address an alleged original fault.

If repair or replacement is impossible, fails, is late or is seriously inconvenient, a price reduction or the final right to reject may follow. In the first six months, a fault is generally presumed present at delivery unless damage, neglect or ordinary wear explains it. A longer shop returns window does not create the statutory right.

Online cancellation is a different right

Many online purchases allow 14 days to cancel without proving a fault, then a further period to return the goods. Exceptions and rules on handling and diminished value can apply. That right is separate from a fault claim.

If the model, size or blades do not match what was promised, say so. "No longer wanted" can hide the complaint. If the pair matches and cuts properly but feels too long, cancellation or the retailer's policy is the more accurate route. Keep proof of notice and check current GOV.UK guidance.

Quality problems and product safety

A weak cut is usually a quality or description complaint. Stop if a blade is loose, fractured or coming off the handle. Keep it away from children and save photographs, packaging and the seller's name. Get medical help for an injury. Report a real safety risk. A poor cut alone is not a safety incident.

In Great Britain, the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 apply. Northern Ireland has a different framework, including EU Regulation 2023/988 for relevant products placed on its market from 13 December 2024. Do not invent a British Standard, UKCA mark or recall for wallpaper scissors. Serious concerns go through current GOV.UK routes.

What your rights do not cover

Dried paste, rust after wet storage, forcing the blades through wire or dropping the open scissors can explain a poor cut. Fair wear after substantial use is not a defect at delivery. Clean and dry the pair as instructed before you decide the edge failed early.

Conventional blades may feel awkward in a left hand without making a symmetrical-handle listing false. A 280 mm overall length is not a misdescription merely because the cutting edge is shorter, unless the listing called that figure the blade length. If the seller says the size was approximate, ask where the page said so.

A genuine private sale must still match its description, but the full trader rules do not apply in the same way. Check whether a personal-looking account is actually a business. Long scissors suit a continuous cut, while a knife and straightedge can suit some table work. Our wallpaper scissors versus a knife guide explains that trade-off.

GOV.UK directs you to consumer advice for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. This is not legal advice.

Common questions

The listing says 12-inch wallpaper scissors, but the cutting edge is shorter. Are they not as described?
Possibly, but it depends on what the listing reasonably meant. A 12-inch figure often describes the overall tool rather than the cutting edge. If the page explicitly promised a 12-inch blade or showed conflicting dimensions, save the listing and measure both lengths. Ask the trader to resolve the mismatch under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. A dimension difference does not automatically decide every claim. Wording, ordinary tolerances and how much the gap matters all count.
Can I reject paperhanging scissors that are actually office or fabric shears?
If a trader described the supplied item as wallpapering or paperhanging scissors but sent a materially different type of shears, you may have a strong argument that the goods do not match their description. Photograph the item, packaging and label, and save the original title and bullets. Complain to the trader that sold the goods, explaining the precise difference rather than relying only on the search category.
Are scissors faulty if the blades do not meet at the tip?
They may be faulty if the gap makes them fold or tear ordinary pasted wallpaper instead of cutting it, especially when they were sold for paperhanging. Price, description and expected durability all affect what counts as satisfactory quality. Test them carefully on scrap paper, record the result and stop if the blades appear loose or unsafe. Damage caused by misuse is a different matter.
How long do I have to request a full refund for faulty scissors?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides a short-term right to reject non-conforming goods, normally lasting 30 days from ownership, delivery or completion of required installation. After that, repair or replacement will usually be the first remedy, subject to the Act's conditions. Do not wait unnecessarily: notify the trader in writing, preserve the evidence and check current official guidance for your circumstances.
Is the 14-day online cancellation right the same as a faulty-goods refund?
No. The usual 14-day cancellation period for many distance purchases lets you change your mind without proving a fault, although exceptions and handling rules can apply. Your Consumer Rights Act remedies concern goods that are faulty, unfit for a stated purpose or not as described. A retailer's voluntary returns policy is separate again and cannot remove the statutory rights that apply to your purchase.
Do I claim against Amazon, the manufacturer or a marketplace seller?
Your Consumer Rights Act claim is generally against the trader that sold you the scissors. Check the order details for the sold-by name rather than assuming that the marketplace operator or manufacturer is the seller. You can use the platform's return process, but state the fault or description mismatch accurately. A manufacturer's warranty may help, yet it does not replace a valid claim against the trader.
Does an ambidextrous label guarantee reversed blades for a left-handed user?
Not necessarily. An ambidextrous handle can be usable in either hand while the blade arrangement still favours right-handed cutting. If the listing specifically promised true left-handed or reversed blades and the supplied pair lacks them, save that wording and raise an as-described claim. If it promised only an ambidextrous grip, disappointment alone may not establish that the description was false.
What if the seller says the size was only approximate?
Ask where the listing made that qualification and whether the stated figure described overall length or blade length. A slight manufacturing variation is different from a figure attached to the wrong characteristic. Send a photograph showing your measurement, quote the exact wording and explain why the difference matters. A court or dispute service would look at the full description and the evidence, rather than an automatic tolerance invented after purchase.
