Wheelbarrow or garden cart

Updated: 21.10.2026

Amazon has put a folding festival trolley, a mesh wagon and a four-wheel tipper in the same row as a tray with two handles, and you are trying to tell which one you came for. A wheelbarrow or garden cart is not a style choice. It is a question of whether you lift the handles or leave the weight on the wheels. If you pull it, and you do not lift, it is not the tool in our [wheelbarrow comparison](/hub/garden-tools/wheelbarrow). The four-wheel wagons belong on the [garden cart comparison](/hub/garden-tools/garden-cart). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

The difference is how the weight sits

A wheelbarrow, for this comparison, is a sloping tray you tip, two handles you lift, and almost always one wheel at the nose. You push it. A garden cart, in Which?'s wording, is the four-wheel machine: more stable, pulled rather than balanced, harder to turn. Two wheels can still be a barrow. Four wheels are a cart. A mesh wagon, a folding festival trolley and a four-wheel tipper were taken out of this wheelbarrow set, because the handles are not lifted and the body is not a tip tray you balance. A tiltable four-wheel body is still a cart. Every listing kept on the wheelbarrow page is a tray barrow. If the photo shows a fabric tub and a telescopic handle, you are in the wrong comparison even when the title says wheelbarrow.

Choose a cart when you pull bulky loads

Choose a cart when the load is bulky, the ground is reasonably even, and you would rather pull than balance. Four wheels keep the tub upright when you let go. Which? is plain that the cart is more stable and that you pull it. A cart is harder to turn in a tight side return, and it is often larger to store. The County Cruiser barrow lists an overall width of 59 cm. A four-wheel cart is frequently wider than that. Soil, gravel and anything wet and sharp belong in a rigid tray, not in a picnic wagon.

Choose a barrow when you must tip and turn

Choose a barrow when you must tip into a heap, turn in a gateway, or take one wheel over ground a cart would bridge badly. One wheel pivots in a space two wheels and four wheels will not. Which? calls that the point of the single wheel, and calls two wheels stabler and clumsier. A two-wheel barrow is still a barrow: you lift the handles, and you push. You hold part of the weight, and a full tray of wet soil becomes a load you may not be able to stop. A cart does not fix a thin pan by having more wheels. How the weight should sit over a single wheel is on how to use a wheelbarrow.

Where to go next

Go to the garden cart comparison if you will pull, if you will leave the handles down, and if the picture in your search is a wagon, a trolley or a four-wheel tipper. Go back to the wheelbarrow buying guide if you will lift, tip and turn. If you can put the tool down and walk away without the load tipping, you are describing a cart. If putting it down means the legs must land or the tray dumps, you are describing a barrow. Festival trolleys pass the first test and then fail at soil, because the floor is fabric. Tipper carts remain carts, because you are not balancing them on one wheel.

Common questions

Is a four-wheel wagon a wheelbarrow?
No. Which? calls four wheels a garden cart: you pull it, it is more stable, and it is harder to turn. A wheelbarrow in this comparison is a tray you tip and handles you lift. Read it on the garden cart comparison.
When is a cart easier on the back?
When the run is fairly level and you would otherwise hold the handles of a loaded barrow for a long push. The weight stays on the wheels, and you pull. It is not easier if the cart will not turn in your gateway, or if you then have to lift every item out because the body does not tip. Stability is the gain. Access is the limit.
When will a cart not go where a barrow will?
On a narrow side path, through a tight gate, and anywhere you need one wheel to pivot. Which? is explicit that a cart is harder to turn and often larger to store. A single-wheel barrow follows a board and a crooked allotment path that a wide wagon will not. Measure the gap before you prefer the cart.
Is a two-wheel barrow a cart?
No. Two wheels make a barrow stabler and clumsier, in Which?'s terms, and you still lift the handles and push. wheelbarrows.co.uk keeps the two-wheel model on the barrow side of the line. A cart has four wheels and is pulled. Adding a second wheel does not make it a cart.
Is a tipping garden cart still a cart?
Yes. A tipper body on four wheels is still pulled, and you still do not balance it on a nose wheel. Tipping is a feature. It does not turn the cart into a wheelbarrow.
Can I carry soil in a fabric festival trolley?
You can put a little in and then wish you had not. A fabric floor is not a tray for wet soil, gravel or anything sharp, and it will not tip cleanly onto a heap. Use a rigid pan for soil, and keep the wagon for dry, boxed loads.
Which comparison should I read?
Read the wheelbarrow comparison if you will lift the handles, push, and tip a sloping tray. Read the garden cart comparison if you will pull a four-wheel body and leave the weight on the wheels. The buying guide is the next page only after you know you want a barrow.
