Wheelbarrow buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

A side gate, a compost bin and a pile of prunings are a normal Saturday in a UK garden, and amazon.co.uk answers that job with a row of heavy-duty wheelbarrows. This wheelbarrow buying guide puts the choices in an order you can use: what you are moving, whether the barrow fits the gate, how many litres you can actually push, then the tray and the tyre. The six listings in our [wheelbarrow comparison](/hub/garden-tools/wheelbarrow) are the price examples here, not a ranking. Who each one suits is on the [best wheelbarrow](/hub/garden-tools/wheelbarrow/sub/wheelbarrow-best) page. Prices and stars are the amazon.co.uk figures in those files. Start with the job and the gate

Prunings and dry compost forgive a light tray. Wet soil, gravel, slabs and rubble do not. If your Saturday is hedge clippings and a few empty pots, a 65 litre pan can be enough. If you are barrowing spoil off a patio, you need a stiffer tray than the £25 to £31 listings. Width comes before volume. The County Cruiser listing gives an overall width of 59 cm on a body of 143 x 59 x 66 cm. Measure the narrowest point you must pass, including a gate latch, and compare that number with the listing's width. Every barrow kept in this comparison is a single-wheel tray.

Volume before the biggest tub

Expert Reviews treats about 85 litres as enough for most gardens, and says the biggest tub is heavy once it is full. wheelbarrows.co.uk talks about 90 to 120 litres as a general volume only if you can push it. 100 to 120 litres is the County Cruiser's stated range. It is too much when you fill it with wet soil, because the weight arrives long before the rim does. A bigger tray is not a stronger tray. The material is the next choice, and the longer argument is on the plastic or steel wheelbarrow page.

Tray, then tyre

Galvanised steel resists rust better than bare steel and still bends if the pressing is thin. That is the failure UK reviews describe on the Requisite Needs listing, including loads reviewers put near 20 kg and 40 kg. Polypropylene does not rust. The only poly tray here is the Spencer County Cruiser. Our raw prices put thin galvanised trays at £25.49 to £30.10 and the poly Cruiser at £49.95. Do not trust puncture proof in a title when the specification says pneumatic. The County Cruiser title says puncture proof, the tyre-type field says pneumatic, tubular. The Vivo GR011 is clearer on this one point: one pneumatic wheel, 13 inches in the bullet.

What the amazon.co.uk prices in this set are buying

The entry band in the saved listings runs from £25.49 to £30.10: Requisite Needs, the Vivo GR011, the other Vivo 65 litre, and the DIVCHI. A £25 barrow can be a first buy for prunings. It is a poor buy when the job is soil. The mid band in the same files is £49.95 for the County Cruiser (4.6 from 86) and £49.99 for the Vivo 85 litre GR012. The GR012 title says 85 litres and 150 kg, but the review text in that file matches the 65 litre Vivo. Do not spend £49.99 on the strength of those stars. If the job is rubble, this set does not contain the barrow.

Common questions

Is 85 litres enough for a normal garden?
Expert Reviews treats about 85 litres as enough for most people, with the warning that the biggest tub becomes heavy. A small garden of prunings can live with 65 litres and more trips. An allotment that moves bulky light waste may want 100 to 120 litres, which is the County Cruiser's stated range, provided you do not fill that range with wet soil. Eighty-five litres is a starting picture.
When is 100 to 120 litres too much?
It is too much when the material is dense. Leaves and dry prunings occupy the volume and stay liftable. Wet soil, gravel and rubble reach a weight you cannot stop long before the tray looks full. wheelbarrows.co.uk treats 90 to 120 litres as a general volume only if you can push it. If you cannot see past the load, the tub is already too big for that trip.
Does galvanised mean the tray will not bend?
No. Galvanising is a zinc coating that slows rust. It does not describe the thickness of the steel. UK reviews of the Requisite Needs 65 litre describe the tray or frame buckling under soil, including loads reviewers put near 20 kg and 40 kg, against a stated 100 kg. Read galvanised as a coating.
Should I choose a pneumatic or a solid wheel?
A pneumatic tyre rolls more easily and can puncture or arrive soft. A solid wheel avoids punctures and rides harder on concrete and gravel. Pick air if most of your path is lawn and you will keep a pump. Pick solid if the barrow lives on thorns and a drive. If the title says puncture proof and the specification says pneumatic, the listing has not chosen.
How wide a barrow will fit a side gate?
Measure the narrowest gap, then compare it with the listed overall width. The County Cruiser file gives 59 cm. A listing that only gives a tray length is not telling you the handle width. If 59 cm is already tight, a wider pan from outside this set will not help.
What should I ignore in a 100 kg or 150 kg bullet?
Treat it as the maker's claim, not as a safe push and not as an HSE limit. HSE's figures are guideline forces for starting and keeping a load moving, and HSE says they are not weight limits. Reviews in this set show cheap trays failing far below 100 kg. The Vivo 85 litre file's 150 kg line is especially weak, because the review text matches the 65 litre listing.
