How to replace a wheelbarrow wheel, step by step

Updated: 16.10.2026

The new wheel is in the hall, the old bolt is rusty, and you want the barrow rolling before the green waste goes out. How to replace a wheelbarrow wheel is a short sequence: measure, remove, change a bush if you must, refit with the spacers in order, then stop if the frame is the real problem. This is not a ranking. Kit contents below are from the 15 October 2026 amazon.co.uk captures on the [wheelbarrow wheel comparison](/hub/garden-tools/wheelbarrow-wheel). Those steps follow the Titan Pro installation guide and Core Castors' fitting notes. No torque figure appears in those sources, so none is given here. Before you start

Lay out a tape measure, penetrating oil, and a spanner, and keep washers in order. Measure the old hub length through the axle hole, and the axle diameter, before you bin the old wheel. Titan Pro's guide asks you to measure, then change a bush, then refit with spacers. What the codes mean is on what size wheelbarrow wheel. A KetoPlastics kit includes an axle, a 120 mm bolt with a nylock nut, and 13 mm bushes. One reviewer still needed a 160 mm axle. The Crystals reducers are 20, 16, and 12 mm on a 25 mm bore. Foam-filled and solid wheels are not inflated. The TMZ listing states 30 PSI as its maximum. That figure belongs to that listing.

Remove the old wheel

Most garden barrows hold the axle with a bolt and nut, a pin, or a cap. Core Castors' note is the ordinary order: take off caps or pins, loosen the bolts, and slide the wheel out. Soak a rusty nut with penetrating oil and give it time. Keep every washer in a line, in the order it sat on the axle. The new wheel often needs the same stack. If the axle is seized, oil it again. Twisting until a leg starts to bend is the point to stop. A cracked bracket is the same stop. Keep the old axle if it is straight and the right length.

Change a bush or add spacers

A bush, or reducer, is a sleeve that makes a larger hole fit a smaller axle. Titan Pro tells you to drive it with a block of wood so the blow does not land on the sleeve. Keep it square. A cocked bush makes the wheel sit at an angle. Spacers fill a hub that is shorter than the bracket gap. KetoPlastics reviewers report spacers that needed trimming and bushes that worked loose. A spacer that is too thick stops the nut reaching a full thread. The Crystals set does not cover a 13 mm axle. A reducer is not a bearing. The measurements are in the replacement wheelbarrow wheel guide.

Refit and check

Thread the axle through the bushes and the spacers, start the nut by hand, and tighten until the wheel cannot walk off, then stop. Core Castors says not to overtighten. Spin the wheel. It should turn without grinding and without a large side-to-side slap. A slap means the hub is short or a bush is loose. A wheel that will not turn means the nut is pinching the hub. If the tyre is pneumatic, inflate to the sidewall figure once you can reach the valve. One TMZ reviewer found the valve almost impossible to reach after the wheel was on, so look at the valve before the final tighten. Solid and foam-filled tyres get no air.

When to stop

Stop if the axle is seized and turning it twists a leg, if a bracket is cracked, or if the bolt hole is oval. Stop if the barrow is used on the road. Stop if you are assessing how hard employees should push. Cutting an axle that is too long is not an instruction from the wheel makers cited here. A 120 mm kit bolt in a frame that needed about 160 mm is a parts problem. Fetch the longer axle. If air against flat-free is still open, that choice is on puncture proof vs pneumatic wheelbarrow wheel.

Common questions

How do I take the old wheel off?
Remove the cap or pin, loosen the nut or bolt, and slide the wheel off the axle. Penetrating oil on a rusty thread is worth the wait. Keep washers in the order they came off, because the new wheel usually needs the same stack. If the axle will not move without twisting a leg of the frame, stop.
The bolt will not move. What now?
Soak it with penetrating oil and leave it. A rounded head is harder to shift than a rusty one that still has flats. Mole grips on a slotted bolt are a last resort, and they chew the slot. If the axle turns inside a seized hub and the leg starts to bend, the job has left ordinary home fitting. Do not add a longer lever.
Do I need to keep the old axle?
Keep it if it is straight and long enough for the brackets. The KetoPlastics kit supplies its own axle and a 120 mm bolt, and one reviewer still needed about 160 mm. A new wheel that arrives without an axle, which is how one Rolson reviewer described that box, has to use the axle you already have. A short new bolt does not replace a long old one.
The new axle is too short or too narrow. What can I do?
If it is too narrow, a reducer of the right size can sleeve the hole, as with the 20, 16, and 12 mm reducers on the Crystals 25 mm bore. A 13 mm axle is not in that set. If the axle is too short to pick up a full thread, you need a longer axle. Packing the gap with loose washers until the nut barely catches is not a fix.
When should I stop and not fit a wheel at all?
Stop for a seized axle that twists a leg, a cracked bracket, an oval bolt hole, or any barrow you take on the road. Also stop if the task is a workplace push-and-pull assessment. A wheel that is the right code and the wrong hub length is a return, not a job for a hacksaw.
