How to use a cordless patio cleaner

Updated: 21.10.2026

You have the brush in the shed, the patio is green in the joints, and the first trigger pull will throw grit back at your shins. This is how to use a cordless patio cleaner so the pass clears the mouth of the gap without emptying the joint or marking the slab. The [cordless joint cleaner comparison](/hub/garden-tools/cordless-joint-cleaner) is the eight amazon.co.uk listings if you have not bought yet. Products Compared used those files and public UK sources, not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you start

Put eye protection on before the battery goes in. The Health and Safety Executive treats projectiles as an eye hazard, and a steel head at these speeds is that hazard. Long trousers and closed shoes matter because the disc kicks stones. Fit the guard the listing shows. Do not tape a two-point switch so it stays on. Sweep the loose grit off the slabs first. A buried stone becomes a projectile, and tall weeds clog the head. Start with a full pack and a corner you can see. If the listing does not rate the tool for water, do not hose it.

The pass

Hold the head at a shallow angle and let the bristles meet the joint. Pressing down is how you scour the arris and how you dig jointing sand out. Use the guide wheel where the tool has one, which the Einhell listings do, so the disc tracks the gap instead of wandering onto the face. On the Einhell solo the two-point trigger is what reviewers call hard to squeeze. That is not a reason to wedge the switch. Work a test corner for a minute before you commit the whole patio. On sandstone or sealed stone that corner should be nylon, not steel. Which head to fit is on the wire brush or nylon patio cleaner page. A 100 mm Einhell head is aimed, on Einhell’s own notes, at crevices of about 10–15 mm. It will not drop into a 3 mm block joint. If the head clogs, stop. Take the battery out before your fingers go near the bristles. Clear the wad of damp soil with a stick, not by holding the trigger and hoping.

After the pass

Sweep the spoil into a bucket or onto a board. Do not brush the moss and soil straight back into the gap you just opened. What you want left in a block joint is kiln-dried sand, not the weed you pulled. Thomas Armstrong’s block guidance is to replace the sand that comes out with the weeds. The full sequence is on the cordless weeder for block paving page. On slab patios with solid mortar, a crumbled joint is a repoint, not a weeding pass.

When to stop

Stop when a test patch marks the stone, when blocks rock underfoot, or when the edge restraint of a drive has moved. A faster second pass will not seat a loose block. That is a paving contractor. Stop as well when the weeds are a few metres of path and you are already on your knees with a knife. The Royal Horticultural Society starts hard-surface weeds with a knife and a hand wire brush. A pressure washer is not the next step when the brush feels slow. Homebuilding’s warning is that a washer strips the joint and does not kill the root.

Common questions

What do I wear before the trigger?
Eye protection, long trousers, and closed shoes, with the guard fitted. The Health and Safety Executive classes flying debris as an eye hazard, and a steel disc throws grit. Ear protection helps on a long session. Keep both hands on the shaft and keep other people off the patio. Do not tape the two-point switch down so the tool runs while you adjust the head.
Do I wet the joint first?
Sweep it dry of loose stones first. A light dampening can cut dust, which is the tip on a related roller brush, but do not hose a cordless tool whose listing has no water rating. Soaking the joint turns soil into a clog, which is what Einhell and Ryobi reviews describe on damp growth. If you dampen, you still take the battery out before you clear the head.
Which way do I hold the head?
At a shallow angle, with light pressure, tracking the joint rather than grinding the face. Use the guide wheel if the tool has one. Leaning on the disc is how you mark sandstone and how you pull jointing sand out. On a joint narrower than about 10 mm the head will sit on top. Slow down, or switch to a knife for the root.
What if the brush clogs?
Release the trigger, take the battery out, and clear the bristles with a stick. Do not hold the switch on while your hand is in the guard, and do not tape the switch. Tall wet weeds are the usual cause. Cut or pull those tops before the next pass. If the clog is a stone jammed in the guard, the same battery-out rule applies before you pull it free.
Do I sweep the spoil back into the joint?
No. Sweep moss and soil off the patio. The material that belongs in a block joint is kiln-dried sand, brushed in the same day once the blocks are dry. Pavingexpert treats that as a maintenance top-up when the joints are already partly full. Do not add it while the surface is wet.
When do I stop and call a paving contractor?
When blocks rock, the edge of the drive has shifted, or a test patch has marked a new natural-stone patio. A second pass with more pressure makes those faults worse. Call a contractor for the structure. Keep the brush for moss in sound joints that are wide enough for the head, and keep the knife for roots the disc cannot reach.
