Faulty wheelbarrow refund: the 30-day right to reject

A creased pan or missing parts can mean a faulty wheelbarrow refund under UK law. The 30-day right to reject, who you write to, and what happens next.

The flat-pack arrived on Tuesday. By Saturday the pan had folded under grass cuttings, or the wheel was missing and the nuts did not match the holes. A faulty wheelbarrow refund is narrower than a banner that says easy returns. If you bought from a trader, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject faulty goods for a full refund. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Products Compared used legislation.gov.uk, Business Companion, and Which?, plus amazon.co.uk review themes from 15 October 2026. There was no lab test, and Amazon's returns rules were not read. In short

On a distance sale you usually have 30 days from the day after delivery to reject a faulty wheelbarrow for a full refund. The clock pauses if you agree to a repair or a replacement, and you then have at least seven days. The refund should follow within 14 days of the seller agreeing, to the same payment method, with no fee. Assembling the flat-pack does not by itself end that right. Wear, misuse, and a change of mind are different problems, and a creased pan is not an automatic win.

The 30-day short-term right to reject

Which? puts the short-term right at 30 days, so you can reject faulty goods for a refund rather than a repair. On a distance sale, Business Companion starts those 30 days the day after delivery. If the carton arrived on Thursday, Friday is day one. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 pauses the clock while a repair or replacement is arranged. When the barrow comes back you have the time left, and at least seven days if less would remain.

Say so in writing while the days are open. A call that ends with 'we'll look into it' is not a dated rejection. The notes to section 20 describe a refund within 14 days of agreement, by the same payment method, with no fee. The right is for a private buyer dealing with a trader. Checked sources showed no different rule for Northern Ireland. A private sale, and a barrow your employer supplies, sit outside this article. A creased pan, if you want the money, is a rejection.

What counts as faulty on a wheelbarrow

Sections 9, 10, and 11 are satisfactory quality, fitness for a purpose you made known, and a match to the description. Quality takes in the price and what barrows of that kind usually do. Description is the wheel, the fixings, and the tray size on the listing. A page you never messaged is usually quality and description.

Reviews captured on 15 October 2026 mention creased pans, missing parts, a missing wheel, and trouble getting a refund. They are not a decision on your barrow. The REQUISITE NEEDS RN-331 was £25.49, with comments on thin steel under light loads. The Gardebruk 108750 was £39.99, at 3.8 from 1,078 ratings, and reviews still mention thin steel under heavy loads.

Photograph a dent on arrival, or a fold under grass or empty pots, and reject inside 30 days. A missing wheel, or nuts that do not match the holes, is easier because the listing included those parts. Assembly does not by itself end the right. Listings in the professional wheelbarrow comparison that state 100 kg or 150 kg are not a full pan of wet soil. A modest garden load is the stronger account if the floor creased. The buying guide matches litres to the job before you reorder.

How to reject it

Message the seller while you still have the barrow. Give the order number, the delivery date, and the fault, and attach photographs of the crease or the empty wheel bay, the fixings, and any model label. Ask for the original payment method within 14 days of agreement, with no fee, and ask them to collect.

I am rejecting this wheelbarrow under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. It is not of satisfactory quality, because the pan creased on first use with garden waste. I ordered it on the date shown on the order and it was delivered on the date the courier left it. Please refund the full price to the original payment method within 14 days of your agreement, with no fee, and arrange collection. I am not agreeing to a repair.

Use satisfactory quality for a buckle or damage on arrival, and the description where the wheel or the fixings were missing. If you still want the refund, say you are using the short-term right to reject. If you accept a repair, note the dates it leaves and returns. Section 22 pauses the clock, with at least seven days when little time is left. The how to use notes matter before you rebuild: a forced hole is hard to separate from a fault. Keep the barrow until the money is back. Heavy use afterwards, or a month in the rain, reads as misuse.

After 30 days

Once the short-term right has ended, Which? describes the next step as one repair or one replacement. You usually cannot open with a full refund and ignore a workable repair. A part that never arrives is not a repair of a bulky barrow. If that single attempt fails, takes too long, or causes significant inconvenience, the further routes are a price reduction or the final right to reject.

In the first six months the fault is treated as present at delivery unless the seller shows otherwise, and Business Companion says there is no deduction for use. After six months you show it was there at the start, and a deduction for use can apply. Which? puts the outer time at up to six years. That is not a promise for a rusty tray. When to replace a wheelbarrow separates a dead pan from a barrow that still needs a wheel. Agree a price reduction in writing. A voucher is not money back to your card.

The seller and the marketplace

The trader is the business on the order. On amazon.co.uk that name is often not Amazon, even when Amazon dispatches the carton. Send the rejection to that seller. Amazon's returns window and any guarantee scheme were not researched here. Check the delivery date, and that the listing described the wheel and the fixings. The Vivo 85 litre written reviews match the 65 litre Vivo page, so stars on one size are not evidence about the other.

If the seller refuses, reply once with the same facts. The 14 days in the section 20 notes start when they agree, not when you first write. This article cannot say you will be paid, and it cannot tell you to sue. A gift, a vanished trader, and a private seller are limits. The person who paid is the one who rejects, unless the account and the card were yours.

What the law does not cover

Ordinary wear, a puncture after weeks of use, and surface rust after rain are not the short-term right to reject. A change of mind after a sound build is outside this page. So is damage you caused: a pan dropped off a kerb, bolts sheared on a misaligned hole, or wet concrete in a light 65 litre tray the listing never offered for that job.

The seven amazon.co.uk flat-packs ran from £25.49 to £59.97 on 15 October 2026. A crease under a light load can still be unsatisfactory at the cheap end. The same crease after you used the barrow as a site skip is easier for the seller to answer. Dates, photographs, and the seller's name carry the conversation. Stop if the barrow is unsafe. Inside 30 days a missing bolt can be a rejection or a repair, and an agreed repair pauses the clock.

Common questions

How long do I have to return a faulty wheelbarrow?
On a distance sale, Business Companion says the 30-day short-term right to reject starts the day after delivery. Inside that window you can reject a faulty barrow for a full refund rather than accept a repair. Section 22 pauses the clock while a repair or replacement you have agreed to is arranged, and you then have at least seven further days. After 30 days the usual route is one repair or one replacement first. This is general information, not a deadline worked out for your order.
Can I reject a wheelbarrow if I have already assembled it?
Building the flat-pack does not, by itself, end the short-term right to reject a fault. A missing wheel, a short bag of nuts, or a pan that creases on a first light load is often how you find the problem. Keep the leftover fixings and photograph the crease before you carry on using it. A change of mind after a sound build is a different question, and this page does not set out cancellation rules for goods you simply do not want.
What counts as faulty on a wheelbarrow?
Sections 9, 10, and 11 cover satisfactory quality, fitness for a purpose you made known to the trader, and a match to the description. A missing wheel or fixings the listing included is a description problem. A pan that arrives creased can be a quality problem. A crease is not automatic: price, description, and the load all matter. A light barrow that folds under grass cuttings is a stronger case than one that fails when you treat a 100 kg sticker as a full pan of wet rubble.
How do I tell the seller I am rejecting it?
Write to the trader named on the order. State that you are rejecting the wheelbarrow under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, name the fault, and give the order date and the delivery date. Ask for a full refund to the original payment method within 14 days of agreement, with no fee, which is what the notes to section 20 describe. Ask them to collect a bulky item. Keep photographs, spare parts, and the thread. Say if you are not agreeing to a repair. The wording is a prompt, not a result.
Who pays for returning a bulky wheelbarrow?
The refund itself must not carry a fee, and it should use the same payment method. These sources do not say every courier bill is repaid, so ask the seller to collect a bulky barrow and keep it until the money is back. Photograph the pan, the wheel, and the fixings before it leaves. If they insist you book a carrier, keep the invoice and your written request. A long trip to a drop-off is something to challenge in that message, not a cost this page promises you will recover.
How long does the seller have to refund me?
The notes to section 20 describe a refund within 14 days of agreement, by the same form of payment, with no fee. Business Companion also says the refund should be made without undue delay. The 14 days run from agreement that you are entitled, not from the first message, so a clear written rejection matters. Store credit is not that payment rule. If the money has not moved after they have agreed, write again and point at the 14-day period.
What if the fault appears after 30 days?
Which? describes the next stage as one repair or one replacement. If that attempt fails, takes too long, or causes significant inconvenience, you can look at a price reduction or the final right to reject. A fault in the first six months is presumed to have been there at the start unless the seller proves otherwise, and Business Companion says there is no deduction for use in those six months. Which? puts the outer limit at up to six years. A rusty pan after two winters is a harder case than a buckle in week three.
What if the seller is a marketplace seller, not Amazon?
The trader is the seller on the contract. On an amazon.co.uk marketplace order that is often a third-party business, so start with the name on the order page. Amazon's own returns policy and any A-to-z guarantee were not checked here, so this page does not tell you to rely on them. Send the rejection to the seller and keep a copy. If they refuse, repeat it in writing with the delivery date and the fault. A consumer advice service can read that thread.
