Heavy duty garden waste bags: what to check first

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have cut the hedge or raked a wet lawn, and a black sack has already split on the path. Heavy duty garden waste bags on amazon.co.uk are the reusable alternative, and the useful ones are the litres you can still pick up, not the largest number in the title. Work through the job, the open size, the cloth and handles, then the seller’s kilogram line. Prices sit on the [Garden waste bag](/hub/garden-supplies/garden-waste-bag) comparison. The Products Compared editorial team read those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources on 19 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are filling

Dry leaves are bulky and light, so a wide mouth helps if you stop before the cloth is tight. Wet grass and pulled roots are already heavy at a modest volume. Tarps UK says part-fill roots or wet grass in a 272 litre sack, and GardenMate’s amazon.co.uk listing says the larger the bag, the lighter the waste should be. Martins Mill notes that a rubble sack can take a small job, then thorns go through the polythene, while a woven bag is easier for a lot of leaves. BBC Gardeners’ World puts everyday waste nearer 75 litres, and 125 litres upward on bigger jobs.

Litres and the open size

272 litres at about 67 cm by 76 cm keeps turning up, including on Adornify’s 150 gsm page. Velway, CKB, RAM and Newthinking use that title, and Goutime’s square pair is a 65 cm cube at the same litres. Ergohortus’s 300 litre pack is 84 cm high by 67 cm wide. 500 litres, about 80 cm across and 100 cm tall on Singwow and Ergohortus, is a holding sack for dry waste or a shared tip. HXSEMAYIG is titled 600 litres at 85 cm by 100 cm, and one review measured about 570, so 600 stays a title. VOUNOT’s three 170 litre bags use a spring, not a hoop. The 272 litre or 500 litre garden bag page settles that pair.

Polypropylene, gsm and handles

The cluster prints woven polypropylene at 140 or 150 grams per square metre, the cloth BBC Gardeners’ World treats as usual for a heavy-duty sack. Nothing here was tested in a lab. ASelected’s £7.99 bag prints no fabric weight: the material field says Plastic and a bullet says polypropylene. Newthinking’s bullet says polypropylene with a PE coating, and the field says polyethylene. Ergohortus shows that split on the 500 litre bag, and polyester on the 300 litre field. Trust the line that agrees with itself. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects the goods to match the description. Heavy duty does not mean waterproof. CKB says dry the bag before you fold it, and Adornify’s 150 gsm page says keep the sacks out of prolonged sun. Who each listing suits is on best garden waste bags.

The kilogram line

A printed 50 kg or 60 kg is the seller’s figure. Ergohortus prints 60 kg on the 500 litre pair and 50 kg on the 300 litre pack. Adornify’s own 272 litre page also carries 50 kg. That shop figure stays on Adornify. It does not move onto a listing that never prints it. One Ergohortus review filled a bag with crushed cans and could barely lift it. Wilko and Tarps UK already say to part-fill. Knotweed, contaminated soil and diseased leaves are a council route, not a tougher fabric. The hoop is often still in the box, and fitting it is on how to use a garden waste bag.

Common questions

Is 150 gsm better than 140 gsm?
Ten grams per square metre is a small step on the label, not a longer life. Several hoop sacks here print 150 gsm, and VOUNOT’s pop-up prints 140 gsm. ASelected prints no fabric weight, so you cannot place it on either side of that gap.
Should the hoop already be fitted?
Often it is not. Velway and ASelected expect you to thread the plastic hoop into the hem, and UK reviews call that fiddly the first time. A hoop in the box still holds the mouth open while you rake. VOUNOT is the exception, because it uses a metal spring.
What does a 50 kg line mean for one person?
It means the seller printed a figure, not that you should lift it. HSE INDG143 has no legal safe weight. A close carry is filtered at 25 kg for men and 16 kg for women, and at 10 kg and 7 kg with the hands at the floor. A 50 kg line on Ergohortus’s 300 litre pack, or on Adornify’s own 272 litre page, sits above both.
Why do two Velway sizes share one review count?
On 19 October 2026 the 272 litre Velway at £8.49 and the 500 litre Velway at £12.74 both showed 4.6 from 2,675 reviews, and the texts match. One text is glad the buyer did not choose 500 litres, so it cannot describe the larger sack. Use the bullet for size, gsm and handles.
Is a square bag missing a feature if it has no hoop?
No. Goutime’s pair is a 65 cm cube at 272 litres, with no hoop in the bullets and three handles, one on the base. The absent hoop is the shape, not a missing part. You hold the mouth or lean the sack in the boot, which is awkward if you want it standing while you rake.
