Wood-Burning Cooker vs Wood-Burning Stove

Updated: October 2026

The same search returns a kitchen range and a log burner. A wood-burning cooker vs wood-burning stove decision is a decision about the job. Buy the cooker when you need a hotplate and an oven on a building flue, and someone will refuel it. Buy a room-heater stove when you want to heat a room and you can live without that oven. A griddle on a stove is not the oven. This page does not rank cooker listings or teach you to light one. A cooker is a hob and an oven; a stove is a room heater

A fixed wood-burning cooker has a steel or cast-iron body, a hotplate, an oven, and a flue. The cookers in this set weigh about 76 kg to 136 kg. A wood-burning stove, in the UK log-burner sense, is a room heater. Some have a small top for a kettle. That plate does not make a range. A third product keeps appearing: a portable stove that folds, burns twigs, and has no building flue. It belongs on the camping page.

Choose the cooker when someone will cook on it and can refuel it

Choose a cooker when the hotplate and the oven are the point, and the room heat is a side effect you can live with. Oven temperature follows the fire. You will not set 180°C and walk away. A named plate, or a count of plates, is what pans need. An oven in millimetres is what a tin needs. Output on the cookers here is about 9.5 kW to 16 kW, or a split such as 5 kW to the room and 15 kW to water. That is not the 5 kW living-room figure stove guides repeat. You also need a flue you can notify. In England and Wales a new solid-fuel appliance is notifiable. Smoke control, and the choice between 125 mm and 150 mm, sits in the buying guide.

Choose the stove when you want room heat and can live without that oven

Choose a room-heater stove when the job is one room, you will not bake, and a kettle on a trivet is a bonus rather than dinner. This comparison will not name a stove from another range as your alternative. If heating the room is the brief, look at room-heater stoves as their own category. Forcing a kitchen cooker to act as a compact log burner gives you an oven you will not use and a weight the floor may not want.

A roomheater standard on the listing is not a cooker decision

Notice 0123/25 lists EN 16510-2-3:2022 for cookers, replacing EN 12815, until 26 September 2027. A cooker in that family cooks and heats the space, and it may have a boiler. The current roomheater standard is BS EN 16510-2-1:2022, which supersedes BS EN 13240. On a cooker page, that roomheater number does not decide the buy or prove a UK exemption. The Prity FGW15 listing is the local example: its standards line cites EN 13240. That is not a certificate of exemption, and it is not a finding that the appliance is illegal. Confirm the model before you install it. The flue is never smaller than the outlet. Up to 20 kW, 125 mm applies only when the appliance meets the Clean Air Act requirements for wood. Otherwise use 150 mm, up to 30 kW. A printed 130 mm with no Defra statement is a problem on either appliance. If you need a hob and an oven, and you have a flue you can notify, stay with a cooker. If you need to heat one room, and baking or boiling is not the main job, choose a room-heater stove instead.

Common questions

What is the difference between a wood-burning cooker and a wood-burning stove?
A cooker has a hotplate and an oven, uses a building chimney, and heats the room as well as the food. Fixed cookers in this set weigh about 76 kg to 136 kg. A stove, as UK buyers use the word, is a room heater. A boiling plate on a stove is not a range. A folding camping stove is a third product.
Can I cook properly on a log burner?
You can boil a kettle on some stoves. You cannot treat that as a hob and an oven. There is no oven to bake in, and a trivet is not a range top for a meal. If cooking is the reason for the purchase, a log burner is the wrong appliance. If the reason is a warm room, the stove matches the job.
Which one should I buy if I want an oven?
Buy the cooker, if you have a flue you can notify and someone to run the fire. Oven heat follows the wood, so you are not buying a set temperature. A room-heater stove does not grow an oven because the search put the two products on one page.
Which one heats a room more simply?
The room-heater stove. Stove guides often talk about 5 kW for a living room, using volume in cubic metres divided by 14 as a retailer rule of thumb. A cooker here is about 9.5 kW to 16 kW, or 5 kW to the room plus 15 kW to water. That is a kitchen and water job, not a simpler lounge heater.
Does a stove with a back boiler replace a cooker with a back boiler?
No. Both need a heating circuit and someone to load the fire. The cooker still has a hotplate and an oven. The stove heats water and a room, and it does not roast. Match the boiler to the job you will do every day, not to the word in the title.
Why does a cooker listing mention EN 13240?
EN 13240 is a roomheater standard. The cooker standard in notice 0123/25 is EN 16510-2-3:2022, replacing EN 12815. The FGW15 listing prints EN 13240, so the page is using a roomheater identifier. That does not mean the product is illegal, and it does not mean it is Defra-exempt. Confirm the model before installation.
Do both need Defra exemption in a smoke control area?
Yes, if either burns wood on a chimney inside a smoke control area. Exemption is separate from Ecodesign, which has applied to both types since 1 January 2022. A CE mark or a German emissions line is not that exemption. Ask the council, then check the model. This page has not confirmed exemption for any listing.
