How to Use a Wood-Burning Cooker That Is Already In

Updated: October 2026

The cooker is installed, and it still will not behave like an electric oven. How to use a wood-burning cooker means a dry, legal fire and the lighting method in your manual. This page assumes the fixed cooker and its flue are already in. It does not choose a model, size a flue, or decide between a cooker and a room-heater stove. The [wood-burning cooker comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/wood-burning-cooker) holds the table. If smoke leaks or the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, you stop and get people out. Products Compared wrote this on 15 October 2026 from HETAS guidance and the England alarm distances in force from 1 October 2022. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Use the manual, dry wood, and a fire that is already legal to light

Open the manual for your model before you lay a fire. A fixed rhythm, such as a set weight of wood every 45 minutes, belongs to one manufacturer’s booklet. Do not copy it onto a different cooker. If the manual is missing, ask the installer or a sweep. In England, wood sold in loads under 2 cubic metres must be Ready to Burn, at no more than 20 percent moisture. Wet logs smoulder, tar the flue, and push smoke into the room. Larger loads need the seller’s drying notice. Keep the stack off the soil and under cover. A smoke control area is not a lighting trick, and Ecodesign text is not permission to burn ordinary wood there. If you are unsure of the address, leave the cooker cold until the council or your installer answers.

Light it so the flue and the top warm before you cook

When the manual is silent, HETAS describes an upside-down lay. Wear safety gloves. Set two small logs on the grate, build kindling in layers above them, and place firelighters where the flame should start. Light that point, close the door, and leave the fire until the top of the cooker is warm. Then close the primary air and add logs. A roaring flame pulls too much air. The useful fire is a lazy flame once the flue is drawing, so smoke goes up the chimney rather than past the door. Keep the pan off until the top is warm. A cold flue is how smoke comes back into the kitchen. If the manual shows a different order, the manual wins.

Cook with the fire you have, not with a set oven temperature

Oven heat follows the fire. You will not hold one temperature for an hour because a dial says so, and this page will not promise a loaf or a joint. A thermometer, if you have one, reports the fire you built. It does not create heat. Small split logs, added before the oven falls away, are a habit some users describe. That is not a measured burn time for these listings. A back-boiler cooker needs the same attention more often, because buyers describe frequent loading. No burn time is published for these listings, so do not leave the house and expect a hot oven on your return.

Shut it down, book the sweep, and stop if the alarm sounds

Let the fire burn down on the air settings your manual describes. Do not invent a damper sequence, and do not pour water on the coals. Empty the ash only when the body is cold. Grey ash can hide an ember, which is how a metal bucket becomes a fire the next morning. HETAS says sweep a wood-burning chimney at least twice a year, before the season and again after the peak. Book a sweep. In England, an alarm for a new fixed solid-fuel appliance goes in the same room, 1 to 3 metres from the appliance, on the ceiling at least 300 mm from any wall, or high on a wall but not within 150 mm of the ceiling. Scotland and Northern Ireland summaries exclude cookers. Wales, from 6 January 2025, includes a fixed flued cooking appliance. Stop if smoke leaks, the alarm sounds, or people feel ill in a way that eases outdoors. Get everyone out and do not go back to cook. A stove in a tent is a separate ban, on the camping page. A new flue, a back boiler, and any doubt about a smoke control area belong to a qualified person.

Common questions

How do I light a wood-burning cooker?
Follow that model’s manual. If it has no lighting section, use the HETAS fallback: two small logs, kindling above them, firelighters at the lighting point, door closed, and no extra logs until the top is warm. Then close the primary air. Wear gloves. A timer and a fuel weight copied from another cooker are not yours.
Why will the oven not hold a set temperature?
The oven follows the fire. A new charge raises the heat and a dying fire lets it drop. There is no dial that creates a steady electric-oven temperature. Read a thermometer as a report, and plan food that tolerates a rise and a fall.
What if the oven cooks and the hotplate does not?
Reviews describe an oven that works while the top stays too cool to fry or boil. Try a smaller, hotter fire once the flue is drawing. If smoke is the result, stop. The cooker will not grow a thermostat, and another manual’s levers are not a safe guess.
How often should the chimney be swept?
HETAS says at least twice a year on wood, before the season and after the busiest period. A sweep may advise the quarterly interval published by the National Association of Chimney Sweeps. Book the sweep. Do not treat a brush and a video as the same job.
Where does the carbon monoxide alarm go?
In England, for a new or replacement fixed solid-fuel appliance, put it in the same room, 1 to 3 metres horizontally from the appliance. The ceiling position is at least 300 mm from any wall. A high wall position must not sit within 150 mm of the ceiling. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland do not all copy the England cooker rule.
When must I stop and call someone?
Stop when smoke leaks, the alarm sounds, or anyone feels ill in a way that improves in fresh air. Do not restart until a qualified person has checked it. Call for a new flue, a back boiler on the heating, a sweep, or any doubt about a smoke control area. Running a signed-off fire is your job. Certifying the installation is not.
