Rattan garden furniture buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a tape measure, a side gate, and a patio that is smaller than the lawn. A rattan garden furniture buying guide only helps if it puts the star rating last. In this comparison the kept amazon.co.uk listings are four jobs: a conversation set, an L-shaped lounge, a rocking pair, and a dining corner. Saved shelf prices sit at £129.99, £199.99, £293.55 and £599.99. None of those rows includes a BS EN 581 report, so 4.4 stars are not a strength test. Match the job, then the two frame lines, then the footprint. The [rattan garden furniture comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/rattan-garden-furniture) is the six-row table. Peter F. read those listings on 21 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the star rating

The headline seat count is the seller's count, not a measured pitch. The EVRE Madrid four-piece is a loveseat, two chairs and a low glass coffee table at £129.99. That is a conversation group, not a place to eat. The three rattanstar colourways are one L-shape: a 3-seater, an ottoman and a coffee table at £199.99, described as up to four people. The ATR set is two rocking chairs and a table at £293.55. The title says three pieces because the table is counted. The EVRE Marylin set is a corner sofa, a tempered-glass dining table and three stools at £599.99, sold as up to nine. Those nine are not nine dining chairs. Decide what you will do on a Saturday before you sort by stars. Drinks at coffee height against a fence means the L-shape, and the rattan corner sofa set page works through handedness and table height. Two people who want to rock means the bistro. Eating outside means a low coffee top is the wrong height even when its stars look stronger. A 4.5 from 58 reviews on the dining corner does not beat a 4.4 from 2,526 reviews on the conversation set unless your criterion is a table you can eat at. Which? also flags wind on light resin sets. A compact group on an exposed terrace can shift even when the weave is outdoor polyethylene.

Read the frame twice

Every set here is a polyethylene weave on a metal frame. Natural cane is a different material. Which? and BBC Gardeners' World both keep it for a dry conservatory rather than an open patio. The PE rattan or natural rattan page sets that split out. On an open patio you are choosing PE, then reading the frame. Powder-coated steel is what the Madrid and Marylin bullets state. Steel can rust where the coat chips at a joint or a screw hole. Aluminium does not rust the same way when a coating is damaged, but that is only a safe claim when the bullet and the specification agree. The rattanstar bullets say rust-proof aluminium. The material field is garbled and includes rust-proof steel. Both lines are on the page, so you should not call that frame rust-proof. The ATR rocking set says powder-coated metal, and the material field says metal. The alloy is not named. If you need one metal written twice, skip ATR and skip rattanstar until a listing agrees with itself. BS EN 581-2 tests seating strength and stability from a 110 kg assumption. It does not test UV ageing or cushion fillings, and none of these ASINs prints a report against it. A high star rating is amazon.co.uk opinion, not that standard. Use 110 kg as a reminder that the Marylin up to 400 kg line is the seller's claim.

Reconcile every dimension

Measure the patio, the side gate and the hallway before you trust a single dimensions row. Homeflair, a retailer, suggests measuring the patio rather than the garden, leaving about 60–80 cm behind dining chairs so you can pull them out, and about 50 cm between a sofa and its table. Those are working allowances, not a British Standard. Gardeners' World uses about a metre around a dining table as a rule of thumb, which is more generous and often impossible on a terrace. Treat the tighter figure as a sketch, then check it with your own tape. The rattanstar item line is 176 × 126 × 71.1 cm. A sofa bullet on the same pages reads 69.3 × 26.8 × 28.0 inches. Those are not one rectangle. About 68 cm from 26.8 inches does not match 126 cm, so keep both numbers and mark the patio with the larger plan before you order. The Madrid item line is 106 × 56 × 82 cm. That is not the footprint of a loveseat plus two chairs plus a table. The Marylin item line is 175 × 70 × 71 cm, and the listing does not treat that as the full corner. If the inch bullet and the centimetre line disagree, do not average them. Weight changes the carry. The rattanstar files say 28 kg. The rocking set also says 28 kg and arrives unassembled, which reviewers describe as heavy. The Marylin file says 83 kg. A side gate around 90 cm is Homeflair's sketch for access, not a guarantee that a boxed corner will turn in your hall.

Cushions, glass and the 30-day window

Cushion wording is the last product check before price. Madrid calls the covers removable and shower-resistant, and a specification field also says waterproof. The stronger word does not cancel the weaker one. Rattanstar calls the fabric water-repellent and tells you to bring the cushions indoors on rainy or snowy days, even though a waterproof field is set to true. Marylin tells you to store cushions during heavy weather. A flag that says waterproof is not winter-proof foam. Glass in this folder is tempered. Only the rocking set states a thickness, 5 mm. The rattanstar tops sit on suction cups. Do not sit on any of these tops. Toughened glass still breaks if the edge is damaged. None of the listings describes a rising table. Assembly is assumed. UK reviews on the Madrid set repeat holes that do not line up. Marylin reviewers mention unlabelled screw bags. Rattanstar's own note is to leave screws loose until they are all in. If parts are wrong or missing, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject faulty goods. Check the frame lines and both size rows on the day the box arrives. Do not add the rattanstar review count across the three colours. The bodies are the same sample.

Common questions

What should I measure before I order a rattan set?
Measure the patio rectangle you will place the set on, the side gate, and the tightest turn in the hall. Write down both the centimetre item line and any inch bullet, because on the rattanstar pages those figures do not describe one rectangle. Add walking space in front of a long arm. A retailer's 50 cm sofa-to-table allowance is a sketch you then check with a tape.
Is the headline seat count the number of chairs?
No. 4 seater on the Madrid set means a loveseat, two chairs and a table. Up to 4 on rattanstar means a 3-seater plus an ottoman. Up to 9 on the Marylin set means a corner, a dining table and three stools. Count the pieces in the bullets, not the number in the title.
What if the bullet says aluminium and the specification says steel?
Treat the frame as unresolved. The rattanstar bullets say rust-proof aluminium and the material field mentions rust-proof steel. You cannot call that set rust-proof. Madrid and Marylin state powder-coated steel in the bullets, which is a single claim you can plan around, including chips at the joints.
Are water-repellent cushions the same as waterproof?
Not in these listings. Water-repellent and shower-resistant still come with instructions to bring cushions in for rain, snow or heavy weather. A specification field that says waterproof does not override that sentence. Foam left under a sealed cover stays damp.
How much space do I leave behind dining chairs?
Homeflair suggests about 60–80 cm so a dining chair can pull out, and about 50 cm between a sofa and a table. Gardeners' World uses about a metre around a dining table as a rule of thumb. Neither figure is a British Standard. On a small patio the metre often will not fit, which is a reason to choose a coffee-height L instead of a dining corner.
Does a high star rating mean the set was tested to BS EN 581?
No. BS EN 581-2 is a mechanical seating standard with tests based on 110 kg. It does not cover UV or cushion fillings, and none of these amazon.co.uk listings prints a pass. The 2,526 reviews on the Madrid set are buyer comments, including misaligned holes. They are not a lab report.
What do I do if parts are wrong after I start building?
Stop and photograph the missing or mismatched parts while you are still inside 30 days of delivery. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the right to reject faulty goods in that period. Unlabelled screw bags and holes that will not meet are the faults UK reviews in this folder already describe. A second person helps with alignment. That does not repair a missing part.
