Rattan armchair buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a listing open, the title says rattan, and the next line says wood, linen, or a plastic weave. A rattan armchair buying guide has to start with that mismatch, because those are different chairs at different prices on amazon.co.uk. This page puts the questions in order: the room, the frame line, the cushion, the size, and only then the price in pounds. The five listings in the [rattan armchair comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/rattan-armchair) run from £97.99 to £206.00 in the files dated 19 October 2026, and only one has a star line. Peter F. did not sit the chairs in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Three products share one name

A rattan armchair in a UK search can be a hand-woven cane chair, a fabric or wood chair with rattan only on the arms, the back or the sides, or polyethylene wicker on a metal frame. BBC Gardeners' World puts natural cane indoors or in a conservatory, because it fades in hard sun and rots if it stays wet, and they put PE outside. Read the frame and material lines before you compare the shelf price. In this set, two chairs are woven. The Desser Teardrop, model 73075, is hand-woven natural rattan at £206.00, marked indoor, and sized 81 × 54 × 91 cm. The ZRIZAURA Norna, model ZR944, is hand-woven rattan at £129.99, and the material line also names bamboo and a clear acrylic lacquer. Its attribute says indoor, while the title mentions a conservatory. The other three are trim. RBFGYIOP at £97.99 puts natural rattan on the armrests of a wood and grey linen chair. ARTEMOTUS at £130.99 puts rattan on the backrest. The generic high-back at £149.99 puts rattan on the sides, and the title says white boucle while one bullet says linen. None of the five is a PE patio armchair. The natural rattan versus PE page is the fork for a patio. The glazed room is the rattan chair for a conservatory page.

Cushion and the stated size

A photo of a padded seat is not the same as a cushion in the box. The Desser listing says no cushion is included, and one of the two UK review texts, from 13 October 2022, says the chair feels strange until you add something in the small of the back. The Norna includes one chair pad. The RBFGYIOP and the ARTEMOTUS both list a cushion. The boucle chair does not say, and it also does not print width, depth or height. Seat height is stated on two listings only. The Desser bullet puts the seat 41 cm from the floor. The Norna seat is 43 cm wide and 40 cm deep at 45 cm high, inside a chair of 56 × 58 × 79 cm that weighs 5 kg as an item. The Desser arm-style attribute also says armless. Those figures are not a comfort test. They are the only seat heights you can quote from this batch.

The missing kilogram

Two trim chairs share one size block. The RBFGYIOP and the ARTEMOTUS both print 68 × 69 × 77 cm and an item weight of 14 kg. That does not mean they are the same chair. It means the copy is unverified until you measure the parcel. The boucle chair prints no dimensions and no item weight, which is a hard stop if you are fitting a bay window or a narrow hall. A user weight in kilograms is missing on every kept listing. The ARTEMOTUS bullet says up to 300 lb. That is the seller's pound figure, not a BS EN 581 rating, and you should not turn it into a certified kilogram limit for the other four. Who should skip each chair, once you know the construction, is on the best rattan armchair page.

Labels and a faulty delivery

A cushion supplied with a domestic chair is upholstery, not a loose scatter cushion you can ignore. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, as amended from 30 October 2025, still expect ignition performance and a permanent label on new domestic upholstery. That amendment removed the display label. FIRA's consumer note from June 2026 includes upholstered furniture used in a conservatory, and it excludes a non-upholstered garden piece such as a deckchair. A missing label in a product photo is a question for the seller. None of these five listings shows that permanent label in the notes we saved. BS EN 581-2:2015 is a mechanical safety standard for outdoor seating, and the 2015 edition's tests use a user basis up to 110 kg. It is not a rain test. None of the five listings cites it. If the chair arrives damaged, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a short-term right to reject faulty goods for 30 days from delivery, and the claim sits with the retailer. Photograph the carton and the joint before you fit the legs. The Desser needs four screws for the legs, and the screws are included. The ARTEMOTUS attribute says assembly is not required, while the bullets describe a set-up, so keep both lines if you open a return.

Common questions

Is rattan on the arm the same as a rattan chair?
No. Rattan on the armrests, the back or the sides is a panel on another chair. In this set the £97.99 RBFGYIOP chair is wood and grey linen with rattan arms, and the £130.99 ARTEMOTUS chair is hardwood with a rattan back. A rattan chair, in the stricter sense, is the weave itself, which here means the Desser Teardrop and the Norna. The title can say rattan in both cases, so the material line is the check.
Which material belongs in a living room, a conservatory and on a patio?
Natural cane belongs in a living room, or in a conservatory you can shade and ventilate. BBC Gardeners' World treats prolonged wet and hard sun as the failure modes for cane, and treats PE wicker as the outdoor weave. A UK patio in the rain is the PE case, and none of the five kept listings is that product. A linen chair with rattan trim belongs indoors with the fabric, not on the lawn.
What seat height is stated on the kept listings?
Two listings state it. The Desser bullet says 41 cm from the floor to the seat. The Norna seat is 45 cm high, 43 cm wide and 40 cm deep. The other three chairs do not print a seat height. The shared 68 × 69 × 77 cm block on the two trim chairs is overall size, not a seat measurement, and it is copied across two ASINs, so measure the chair when it arrives.
Does the chair include a cushion?
It depends on the ASIN. The Desser says no cushion is included. The Norna includes one chair pad. The RBFGYIOP and the ARTEMOTUS both list a cushion. The £149.99 boucle chair does not say. A review of the Desser asked for extra support in the small of the back, which is a comfort note from four reviews, not a reason to assume every cane chair needs the same pad.
What if no user weight is printed?
Treat the gap as a gap. Item weight is the chair: 5 kg on the Norna, 14 kg on the two trim chairs that print it, and unstated on the Desser and the boucle chair. The only user line in the set is up to 300 lb on the ARTEMOTUS, and that is not a kilogram test and not BS EN 581-2. The 2015 outdoor seating standard uses a user basis up to 110 kg, and none of these listings cites it.
