How to look after a metal garden table

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to leave a metal garden table on a UK patio through autumn rain, and the coating is only as good as the chips you have not looked at yet. A sealed cover can trap the damp you were trying to keep off. This page is how to look after a metal garden table: wash it, keep the coat whole, and let any cover breathe. It does not rank the five listings. The product grid is the [metal garden table comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/metal-garden-table). Peter F. set the steps against RHS and UK maker guidance on 22 October 2026. A rust-proof bullet is not a promise that the coat will last.

Wash the frame

Wash the frame with warm water and a mild washing-up liquid, then rinse and dry it. Harbour Lifestyle's aluminium guidance is soapy water, no bleach, no harsh solvent, and lift the table rather than dragging it, because grit cuts the coat. The RHS says to clean metal garden furniture and to deal with rust where the finish has cracked, then repaint on a cycle of about two to three years. That interval is general advice. It is not a measured life for these five tables. Do the wash on a dry day. A soft cloth is enough for powder coat. If the top is wood, as the Newark listing states, wipe it with a damp cloth and do not soak the grain.

Chips and rust

Coated steel rusts where the powder coat is broken. Aluminium does not form that orange iron rust. It can still stain and pit in salt air. In this set the Grand patio table and the Newark are powder-coated steel. The YITAHOME frame is aluminium. The ZEECER and Taylor & Brown listings only say metal. The ZEECER bullets claim a rust-proof coating, and one UK review says the table was rusty after a month. Why the metals differ is on aluminium or steel garden table. For a small chip on coated steel, clean the spot, let it dry, rub away loose rust, then use a small amount of matching touch-up paint.

Covers and winter

Put a cover on a dry frame, and choose one that breathes. Cox & Cox and similar UK care notes say a plastic tarpaulin can be worse than no cover because it traps condensation against the metal. If you do not have a breathable cover, a dry place under a roof overhang is often kinder than a sealed sheet. Aluminium left outside all year is normal maker advice, provided you wash it. Coated steel can stay out if you accept inspection and touch-up. Cushions do not belong in the cover. Parasols should come down and be stored dry. The Newark hole is 40 mm and the parasol is a separate purchase. On the coast, rinse with fresh water about monthly and after a gale.

When a spray can is not enough

A peppering of chips is a Saturday job with a small brush. Peeling across a whole leg, rust you can flake off in sheets, or a frame that rocks because a tube has thinned is past touch-up paint. A refinisher who can strip and recoat is the honest next step. Stop if you would need to grind sound metal or weld a joint. None of the five listings here is a glass table. A short screw or a hole that never lined up, which shows up in some YITAHOME assembly reviews, is a fitting fault from day one. Size, before you buy, is on how to choose a metal garden table.

Common questions

Can aluminium stay out all year?
Yes, with washing. Aluminium garden furniture is commonly left outside in the UK. Use soapy water, skip bleach, rinse, and dry the feet. It will not grow orange iron rust the way chipped steel does. Salt air still needs a fresh-water rinse, and a chip in the paint can look tired even when the metal is sound. The YITAHOME frame is the aluminium one in this set.
Should I cover steel in winter?
Cover it only when the frame is clean and dry, and only with a cover that can vent. A sealed plastic tarp holds moisture against powder coat and can do more harm than leaving the table in the open under a roof. Coated steel can stay outside if you check chips. If you have a dry shed and the table folds, as the Newark does, storage is reasonable.
What cleaner is safe on powder coat?
Warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid, then a rinse and a dry. Skip bleach, cream cleaner and abrasive pads. Harbour Lifestyle gives that limit for aluminium outdoor furniture, and the same mild wash is what you want on powder-coated steel so you do not cut the film. Dry the underside and the feet. A cleaner that strips grease from a bike chain is too aggressive for this coat.
How do I touch up a chip?
On coated steel, clean the spot, dry it, remove loose rust, and apply a small amount of matching touch-up paint. Let it cure before you load the top. You are sealing bare metal, not respraying the table on the lawn. Do not paint a wood top, such as the Newark's, with metal touch-up.
When is a chip too big for a DIY touch-up?
When the coat is peeling along a leg, rust flakes off in sheets, or the tube feels thin and the table rocks, a spray can will only hide it briefly. That is the point to ask a refinisher about stripping and recoating, or to retire the frame. A single stone chip is still a home job if the metal underneath is solid.
