Aluminium or steel garden table

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a metal garden table for a UK patio, and the listing says metal or rust-proof without saying which metal. Coated steel rusts at a chip, and aluminium does not rust in the same way, though it can still mark and it is often lighter in the wind. This page is the one decision, aluminium or steel. The five listings are on the [metal garden table comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/metal-garden-table). BS EN 581 does not rank aluminium above steel. It is a safety series for outdoor tables, not a materials league. Peter F. read the frame lines on 22 October 2026. There is no lab comparison. What the listing must say

Read the frame line before the lifestyle sentence. You want the word aluminium, or the word steel, plus the coating if it is steel. Metal, iron look and rust-proof are not a specification you can maintain. Powder coating is a skin. On steel it keeps water off until it is chipped. Then the steel underneath rusts. Aluminium can still oxidise and look dull, especially in salt air. It does not throw the orange rust you see on a cheap steel plant stand after one wet month. Do not assume a powder-coated listing is galvanised. The Newark page says powder-coated steel and does not say galvanised. A wood, resin or WPC top does not change the frame metal. The Newark top is wood on steel. The YITAHOME bullets say resin and the technical details say WPC, on an aluminium frame.

Weight and wind

Cast aluminium sits better in a gust than thin tube, and it is harder to slide into a shed. Tubular aluminium is the light frame one person can lift. Neither form is a rust cure for steel. A 13 kg folding bistro, the Newark's listed weight, will feel more planted than a 2.64 kg side table. It is still powder-coated steel. The YITAHOME frame at about 10 kg is easy to reposition and easy for a door to catch on a windy landing. Weight is not quality by itself. Centimetres for a balcony stay on small metal garden table for a balcony.

How the five tables split

Only the YITAHOME square dining table states an aluminium frame: about 78 x 78 x 74 cm, stated load 75 kg, about £49.99, 4.3 from 132 reviews. The top material is unresolved, the details block shows a different ASIN from the URL, and a second size line says 78 x 140 x 74 cm. Those gaps do not erase the aluminium word. Two listings state powder-coated steel. The Grand patio side table is about 45 cm round, 2.64 kg, about £26.98, 4.4 from 281 reviews, and it does not fold. The Newark is 70 x 70 x 74 cm, 13 kg, about £189, with a fold and 5.0 from three reviews. Two listings say metal and nothing more precise.

Coast and chips

Within sight of the sea, rinse with fresh water about monthly and after gales. Harbour Lifestyle's aluminium care note says salt needs that rinse, and that bleach is a bad idea on the finish. The same salt sits in a steel chip. Aluminium is the calmer choice on a coastal balcony if the listing actually says aluminium. Coated steel can still live there if you touch up bare metal while the mark is small. Steel screws in an aluminium frame can rust even when the tubes do not. Pick aluminium when the table will stay out or you do not want a touch-up habit. Pick powder-coated steel when the listing names it and the review sample is large enough to show chips. Wash steps are on how to look after a metal garden table.

Common questions

Will steel rust in a UK winter?
Powder-coated steel rusts where the coat is chipped, including at feet and screws, if water sits there. A sound coat can get through a winter. An untouched chip often will not. The Grand patio and Newark listings are this kind of steel. A rust-proof line, as on the ZEECER table, did not stop one reviewer reporting rust after a month. Aluminium avoids that orange rust. It still needs a wash.
Is cast aluminium worth more than tube?
Cast aluminium is heavier and usually stays put in wind, which is why traditional sets cost more and take two people to move. Tube is lighter and easier on a balcony, and it can blow or slide if you leave it loose. This comparison does not include a cast listing. The YITAHOME frame is aluminium at about 10 kg, which behaves like a liftable table, not like a cast bench.
Which of these tables is actually aluminium?
The YITAHOME square table is the one that states an aluminium frame. The Grand patio table and the Newark state powder-coated steel. The Taylor & Brown and ZEECER pages say metal only. Do not upgrade those two to aluminium because the photo looks silver or the bullet says rust-proof. The YITAHOME top is still described as both resin and WPC, so the frame word and the top word are separate checks.
Does powder coating make steel rust-proof?
No. Powder coat slows water reaching the steel. A stone chip, a dragged foot or a crack at a joint opens the steel, and UK rain does the rest. Touch-up paint on a clean, dry chip is the maintenance. Galvanising is not stated for the Newark or the Grand patio table, so do not add it. Three five-star reviews are not a coating test.
What if I live near the sea?
Prefer a listing that says aluminium, rinse with fresh water about monthly and after gales, and do not use bleach. Coated steel can cope if you inspect chips and screws on that same rhythm. Salt makes the failure faster. It does not invent a new metal. The only named aluminium frame in this set is the YITAHOME table, with the listing conflicts that page already has.
