How to fit a garden swing cover

Updated: 22 October 2026

The cover is out of the box, or about to be, and the usual mistakes are already waiting: the tape was run across the cushions, the hem was left flapping, or the seat pads stayed underneath for winter. This page is how to fit a garden swing cover on the day, in order, for an A-frame shell. It does not rank fabrics. Product rows stay on the [garden swing cover comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-swing-cover). Peter F. set the order from the saved listings. Stop if the frame has already moved.

Before the cover leaves the bag

Start with a dry frame. Wipe standing water off the canopy and the seat boards. Take the cushions off and store them in a dry shed or garage. A cover cannot dry a wet cushion. Check the listing centimetres against the empty swing once more: widest width, deepest depth, height to the top of the canopy. A wrong size cannot be fixed with a tighter cord. If the numbers never matched, stop and reopen the garden swing cover buying guide rather than forcing the shell. Do not swing while the cover is on. If the frame is already loose or has lifted in wind, stop; that is a furniture problem, not a fitting tip.

Over the canopy, zip open

Open any zip before the cloth goes over a tall frame. Get the shell over the roof, then deal with the hem. Drop the cover so the roof panel sits square, then work the sides down the legs. Keep the opening at the front if the listing has a front door. Corner zips on a cover such as LIVIVO are not the same as a full front panel. If hauling a drawstring opens the zip, close the zip fully and stop pulling against it. AWNIC’s 3-seater states a front zip with hook-and-loop at middle and bottom. SIHAIAN lists two zips plus buckles and drawstrings. Hohong’s large A-frame row states buckles and a hem drawstring without a zip, so that shell is buckled, not zipped shut.

Hem, then the fastening named on your listing

Once the shell is down the legs, pull the drawstring or hem cord in and set the cord lock if the listing has one. Maker guidance often leaves a small gap so the hem is not a sail edge and is not sitting in a puddle. Those figures are not a measurement of these ten ASINs. Then use the fastening the listing names. LIVIVO’s four ropes go through metal eyelets and tie to the frame, rather than staying in the bag. AWNIC uses hook-and-loop after the zip. SIHAIAN adds a waist belt and four bottom buckles. Hohong’s canopy-shaped cover adds a centre strap. PRADICHI and DIVCHI lean on a drawstring or elastic; reviews say ties break, so a cord that will not hold is not a fitted cover. Wipe or rinse for care. Hohong’s A-frame listing says do not machine-wash.

Cushions, condensation, and when to stop

Cushions stay indoors for winter storage on this page. A cover cannot rule condensation out. Prefer a dry shed, not pads under the cloth from October to March. After rain, damp on the seat is often a temperature change rather than a failed seam. Air the swing on a dry day and retie a loosened cord before the next gust. Stop if the frame is loose, the swing has already shifted, or the centimetres were wrong from the start. If a seller will not remedy a waterproof description given prominently, that is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 path, not the first response to a gale. When the size matches and the hem is closed but the cloth still balloons, the diagnosis moves to garden swing cover blowing away.

Common questions

Do I measure with the cushions on?
No for this ready-made set. Measure the empty frame, then store the cushions dry. Cushions left on make the hem look shorter than it is. Only a made-to-measure maker who told you to include pad depth should change that rule, and even then a wet cushion still comes off.
Should the hem sit on the grass?
It should not drag as a loose sail edge, and it should not sit in standing water. Maker guidance often leaves a small airflow gap; pull the cord in so the hem is gathered around the feet rather than flapping.
What order do I do the zip, the buckles and the drawstring?
Put the roof panel on the canopy first, opening at the front if the listing has a front zip. Open the zip first, get the shell on, close the zip fully, then tighten the hem cord, then fasten buckles, ropes or hook-and-loop as the listing names them. Do not haul a drawstring against a half-open zip.
Can the cushions stay on through winter?
Not as the default advice here. Soft furnishings sweat and take up ground damp under a cover. Take them off for winter. Store them indoors or in a dry shed. A cover does not dry a wet cushion.
There is water on the seat after rain. Is the cover leaking?
Often it is condensation after a temperature drop. Dry the frame, air the swing, and check seams only after you have ruled out trapped moisture and a hem that never closed.
The drawstring seems to undo the zip. What then?
Close the zip completely first. Stop pulling the cord if it is forcing the zip open. Refit the panel, then gather the hem. If the zip will not stay shut in wind after a correct size, treat that as a fastening problem on the wind page.
When do I stop and get help with the frame?
When the frame is loose, has already lifted, or the stated centimetres never matched your tape. A cover adjustment will not repair a moving swing. Get the furniture stable before you buy another shell. A sales remedy is for a seller who will not remedy a failed waterproof description, not for an open hem.
