Garden furniture set buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to order a garden furniture set, and the same search covers a folding table for two and a corner that claims nine seats. On amazon.co.uk on 21 October 2026, twelve listings run from £99.98 to £599.99. A star rating does not tell you coffee height from dining height, or whether cushions can stay out. Mark the paving, name the job, then read a kilogram bullet beside a 110 kg test basis. The twelve sets are on the [garden furniture set comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-furniture-set). Peter F. read those listings on 21 October 2026. This is not a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A garden furniture set here is one listing of several pieces: a bistro, a low lounge, an L-shaped corner, a daybed, a dining corner, or a propane sectional. A coffee-table sofa will not take Sunday lunch. Under £150 sit the folding bistro at £99.98, a rose cast bistro at £109.99, another cast bistro at £129.99, Madrid at £129.99, and a mesh set at £134.98. Rattanstar is £199.99, Bali £255.99, the propane sectional £259.99, and a rocking pair £293.55. Marylin, the only dining-height corner, is £599.99. Only the folding bistro prints assembly as none. Footprints under about 3 m belong on the garden furniture set for a small patio page.

Measure the patio and the doorway

Measure the usable paving, the narrowest door, then the largest box. Robert Dyas suggests tape on the floor and a check of the carton. BBC Gardeners’ World uses about a metre clear of the table as a rule of thumb. Elystra Living uses at least 60 cm behind a dining chair, 75 cm to push it back, and a walkway of 70–90 cm. None of that is BS EN 581. Marylin’s sofas print about 175 cm and 165.5 cm, at 83 kg in three boxes. Rattanstar’s attribute is 176 × 126 × 71.1 cm, and a depth line prints 3 with no unit. The folding bistro prints 60 cm beside 100 × 100 × 100 cm, and a weight of 1 kg. Use your tape. How the screws go in is on how to look after a rattan garden furniture set.

What a weight and a waterproof line mean

A kilogram on a bullet is the seller’s stated load. BS EN 581-2:2026 bases seating tests on persons up to 110 kg and excludes weathering. BS EN 581-1:2017 is about accessible edges. BS EN 581-3:2026 covers tables, including glass. No listing here cites them. The folding bistro states 150 kg a chair and 90 kg on the table. The mesh set states 150 kg a chair. The rocking bistro states 159 kg. TangXiaoQi states 220 lb. Bali limits the whole bed to 120 kg. Marylin claims up to 400 kg. That 400 kg line is not a result you can copy onto a folding chair. Madrid reviews describe glass that does not sit. Rattanstar and EVRE say bring cushions in when wet, even if an attribute says waterproof. Weave versus metal is on rattan vs metal garden furniture.

If it arrives broken or does not fit

Smashed glass, or holes that never meet on a joint that carries weight, is a fault, not a weekend of drilling. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that are faulty on delivery. Within six months a fault is assumed present unless the trader proves otherwise. The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 days to cancel most online goods after receipt, or after the last piece if delivery is split. A change of mind can still leave you paying the return. Photograph cracked glass before you build around it. Gas Safe Register is the route for gas work. This capture’s fire-pit listing does not print a Gas Safe mark. A folding bistro is not a gas job.

Common questions

How do I measure before I buy a garden furniture set?
Mark the usable rectangle, the door swing and the narrowest stair, then chalk the largest piece. Robert Dyas also wants the largest box checked,. A metre of clearance, from BBC Gardeners’ World, is a rule of thumb, not a law. If the balcony cannot give you that metre, buy a smaller set.
Does 150 kg on the chair mean it was tested to 150 kg?
No. The 150 kg line on the folding bistro is the seller’s bullet. BS EN 581-2:2026 uses a test basis of up to 110 kg and does not cover weathering. None of these twelve listings print that standard number. Read 150 kg, 159 kg, 220 lb and 400 kg as claims beside that 110 kg basis, not as a BSI certificate.
Is rattan on these listings natural rattan?
On these outdoor listings, rattan usually means polyethylene weave over a metal frame. Which? and BBC Gardeners’ World treat natural wicker as the wrong default for a wet British garden. Madrid, Marylin, Bali, rattanstar, the rocking pair and the propane sectional are in that synthetic group. The frame line is the one to read.
Can I leave showerproof cushions out all winter?
Not on the evidence in this folder. Rattanstar and EVRE say bring the cushions in when they are wet, and Marylin says keep them indoors and recommends a 600D cover that is not in the box. Showerproof is a light-rain claim. It is not a winter left on the patio.
What if the set does not fit after delivery?
If you ordered the wrong size, the 14-day cancellation under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 runs from receipt, or from the last piece if the boxes arrive separately. Smashed glass or a frame that cannot be made square is the 30-day rejection right under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Measuring Marylin’s 175 cm sofa first is cheaper than sending three boxes back.
Do I need a Gas Safe check for every set?
No. Eleven of these listings have no flame. The Xmkmvk sectional is the exception: a 50,000 BTU propane table, one review, and no hose, regulator, clearance or Gas Safe mark. Gas work belongs with a Gas Safe engineer. A steel bistro or a PE sofa is not a gas job because it sits outdoors.
