Waterproof or water-resistant garden cushions

Updated: 22 October 2026

You read waterproof on a polyester pad, left it on the chair through a wet Thursday, and found the foam cold underneath. The title and the storage line were never the same promise. This page sorts waterproof or water-resistant garden cushions as words on a listing, not as a hose test we ran. The ten products, with GBP prices, are on the [garden chair cushions comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-chair-cushions). Products Compared compared the wording on those amazon.co.uk extracts on 21 October 2026, plus UK fabric notes from sellers who publish them. We did not spray the pads. Three words that are not the same test

Waterproof, water-resistant, and water-repellent are seller language. They are not grades in the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, and they are not a British Standard result for these cushions. PatioCushions separates them this way: waterproof blocks water and can trap moisture in the filling, water-repellent beads off a light wet, and water-resistant slows water rather than stopping a downpour. JB Furniture says its season-proof cloth is water-resistant and not waterproof, and tells you to bring cushions in. Oxley’s says most outdoor fabric is water-repellent and that a downpour can still seep. None of them is a test of the ten ASINs here. If the listing tells you to bring the pad in, you bought a shower pad. How to measure is on the garden chair cushions buying guide.

What these amazon listings actually print

The PrimePatio seat pairs say the pads are UV and waterproof treated, and the same bullet says to bring them indoors when it rains or when they are not in use. The blue pair at £21.44 also names a waterproof PU coating and a fade claim of over 501 hours. That hour figure is a seller claim, not BS 5852. Reviewers in the shared 470-review block call the pads waterproof. That repeats the title. It does not override the bring-indoors line. The green, blue, navy, and 120 cm high-back listings say water-resistant and store indoors in heavy rain. A feature field on some of those pages also says waterproof. Follow the prose. The Oxford four-pack at £36.98 says the cloth repels light rain, and one review says the pads absorb rain if left out. The widesmile set names a TPU backing and still says store indoors in heavy rain. EDIMENS says outdoor use and does not state a rain rating. Outdoor use is a place, not a test.

Acrylic is a different promise

Showroom outdoor cloth is usually a water-repellent acrylic. Barlow Tyrie’s Sunbrella notes treat the standard finish as water-repellent and say not to leave it out in heavy rain. Rain fabric is the barrier they describe as waterproof, and they treat it as outdoor-only. A barrier can still hold water in the foam if stitching lets the rain in. We do not have a GBP figure here for a made-to-order acrylic pad, so this page will not invent a price gap. A dining set under a solid roof can live with a polyester pad whose bullet already says bring it in. A chair on an open lawn is where the acrylic conversation with a cushion maker belongs. These ASINs do not say they use open-cell foam. A maker’s fade warranty does not transfer to a 500-hour line on a polyester bullet.

What you still do in a wet week

Bring the pad in when the listing says so. Stand a pad that did get wet on its edge indoors until the centre is no longer cool. A furniture cover does not prove the cushion core is dry. Sealed plastic in the shed is how a cool centre becomes mould. Drying the core is on how to fit garden chair cushions. If the chair lives in the open, do not pay extra inside this set for a listing that says waterproof and bring indoors, and expect a different result from the grey pair next to it. The sentences match. A pad soaked because you left it out, against a bullet that told you to bring it in, is a different conversation from a pad that leaked in the light rain the bullet claimed to resist.

Common questions

If the title says waterproof, can the pad live outside?
Not on the strength of that word alone. The PrimePatio seat pairs say waterproof treated and also say bring them indoors when it rains or when they are not in use. Read the storage sentence in the same bullet. If it tells you to take the pad in, treat the pad as a shower cushion.
What is the difference between water-resistant and water-repellent?
In UK seller language, water-repellent usually means water beads and runs off a light wet. Water-resistant usually means the cloth slows water rather than sealing it. PatioCushions, Oxley’s, and JB Furniture do not use the words identically. None of those definitions is a test result for a particular ASIN. The bring-indoors line is the part you can check on the page.
Does a PU or TPU backing make it waterproof?
It is a layer the listing names. The blue printed pair names a PU coating and still says bring the pads in. The widesmile set names a TPU backing and still says store the cushions indoors in heavy rain. Seams, zips, and stitch holes are not covered by the word backing. A named coating is not a hose test.
Are Sunbrella cushions waterproof?
Standard Sunbrella, on the UK fabric sheet used by Barlow Tyrie, is a water-repellent finish, not a waterproof cloth, and the advice is not to leave it out in heavy rain. Their Rain fabric is the barrier they describe as waterproof, and they treat it as outdoor-only. A barrier can still trap water in the filling if the seams leak.
Will a 500-hour UV line stop fading?
The PrimePatio seat bullets claim the cloth will not fade for over 500 or 501 hours in direct sun. That is a seller sentence in the extract. It is not a British Standard result in this comparison, and it is not BS 5852, which is a fire method. Navy and high-back reviews still mention fade. A UV line does not cancel those comments.
Is showerproof the same as waterproof?
On the Oxford four-pack, the bullet says light rain, and one review says showerproof rather than waterproof, and that the pads absorb rain if left out. Use showerproof to mean a short shower and then indoors. It is not a reason to leave the pads on uncovered chairs for a wet week.
