Garden chair cushions buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

The chairs are already on the patio. The seat is hard, last year’s pad has gone thin, and a title that only says outdoor cushion still does not tell you whether 45 cm will sit inside the arms. This garden chair cushions buying guide is the order to use before you open amazon.co.uk: measure the frame in centimetres, then decide ties, thickness, and how many pads must match. The ten listings we kept, with prices in GBP, are on the [garden chair cushions comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-chair-cushions). Products Compared read those amazon.co.uk extracts on 21 October 2026. We did not hose the pads or run a fire test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the seat before you trust the title

Start with the chair you will actually sit on, not with the pad you are throwing away. A crushed old cushion is smaller than the frame. Use a metal tape. Record the width between the arms and the depth from the front edge to the back post. If you also need a back pad, record the back height. Write the numbers in centimetres. Inches on a bullet are a different product, and one set in this comparison prints both. The squares on this shelf are 45 × 45 cm, 48 × 48 cm, and 50 × 50 cm. They are not interchangeable. A 50 cm pad on a 45 cm seat overhangs the front. A 45 cm pad on a 50 cm board leaves a hard border. If the listing itself disagrees, stop. The widesmile set prints 55 × 55 cm and a bullet that says 55 inches. The EDIMENS cushion prints three footprints. Match one line, and if none matches, do not average them.

Thickness, ties, and how many pads

Made-to-order outdoor seat pads are often quoted around 4–5 cm. On the amazon.co.uk extracts we kept, the usual thick claim is 7 cm of foam, stated on the PrimePatio pairs and on the green and navy backrest bullets. A 4–5 cm pad is the quieter replacement when the arms are low, because a thick pad can lift you above them. A stated 7 cm pad is the step up when the board is hard. Shredded foam is a different feel from a slab. A missing thickness, as on the Oxford four-pack and the 120 cm high-back, means you are buying a size in plan view only. Ties matter on a smooth outdoor seat. Two ties a side, which the grey and dark grey pairs state, or two straps on the Oxford four-pack, stop the pad walking forward. The blue printed 50 cm pair does not state ties. Buy every pad for one set in the same order when the shade has to match. A review on the shared PrimePatio text says a second dark grey pair was a slightly different shade. The four-pack at £36.98 puts four 48 cm pads in one box, and it still does not state a thickness.

Polyester now, acrylic if the chairs stay

Every kept extract is polyester, with a weather sentence you have to read beside the storage line. Several PrimePatio seat pads say they are UV and waterproof treated and also say to bring them indoors when it rains. That pairing is the buying point. How the word waterproof is used sits on waterproof or water-resistant garden cushions. Solution-dyed acrylic is a different class. Barlow Tyrie’s Sunbrella notes treat standard acrylic as water-repellent, and they treat a Rain barrier as the waterproof layer. We do not have a GBP price for a made-to-order acrylic pad in this comparison, so this page will not invent one. Use a cushion maker when the chairs are staying for years. Use the polyester pair when you want a tied pad this week. If the pad is suitable for a dwelling or a conservatory, the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 can apply. The method named is BS 5852. You look for the permanent label. From 30 October 2025, SI 2025/531 removes the display swing label. The permanent label stays. These extracts do not quote a fire label. That is a gap in the listing text, not proof the goods are unlabelled.

What to leave for the other pages

This page stops once you know the centimetres, the ties, the thickness band, and whether polyester is enough. It does not pick a winner among the ten rows. A 45 cm square will not cover a high rattan back. That length, often around 120 cm when you add seat depth to back height, belongs on garden chair cushions with a backrest. Do not start with the star line. Three PrimePatio colour listings share one 4.4 from 470 review block. That is not three separate proofs that blue, grey, and dark grey each survived the same test. A 4.7 from 33 on the four-pack is a shorter sample, and one of those reviews says the pads absorb rain. Stars tell you the listing is popular. Your tape and the storage sentence tell you whether it fits the chair you have.

Common questions

How thick should a garden chair cushion be?
For a hard dining board, the thick claim on these amazon.co.uk extracts is 7 cm of foam. Makers who cut pads to order often use about 4–5 cm, and Fabrica Kraft’s dining band includes about 5–7.5 cm. A thicker pad can lift you above low arms, so measure the frame and sit the height against the arms before you treat 7 cm as automatically better.
Do I need ties on a patio chair pad?
On a smooth or slightly sloping seat, yes, you want a fastening the listing actually states. Two ties a side, two straps, or ties plus a rear elastic strap are the versions in this set. The blue printed 50 cm pair and the widesmile set do not state ties. You can still use them if you accept that the pad may creep.
Is 50 × 50 cm the standard UK garden chair cushion?
It is a common size, and POKAR calls 50 × 50 cm versatile for garden and kitchen chairs. This shelf also sells 45 × 45 cm and 48 × 48 cm. None of those is universal. Measure between the arms and from front to back post, and buy the square that matches, not the square that sounds standard.
Can I buy two pairs now and two later so the colour matches?
You can, and you should expect a risk. A review in the shared PrimePatio text says a second dark grey pair was a slightly different shade. If four chairs must look like one set, order the pads together. A four-pack is one way to do that. It does not, by itself, give you a stated thickness.
Are these amazon pads the same as solution-dyed acrylic?
No. The kept extracts are polyester, and the country of origin line says China. Solution-dyed acrylic is the cloth specialists cut for a suite that is staying. Standard acrylic is generally water-repellent rather than a waterproof barrier. This comparison has no GBP price for a made-to-order acrylic pad, so compare that quote with the maker, not with a number invented here.
What if the cushion will also be used indoors?
If it is suitable for a dwelling or a conservatory, the 1988 fire regulations can apply and you look for the permanent label. The display swing label was removed from 30 October 2025. These extracts do not quote a fire label. That is a gap in the listing text, not proof the goods are unlabelled. A back-pain phrase on a title is not medical advice.
