Garden storage bench for cushions

Updated: 22 October 2026

The cushions came off the chairs, the lid looks large, and the listing says 265 litres and ventilated and dry. That still does not tell you whether the stack will close, or what happens when rain sits on the lid. Measure the pads against the internal centimetres, put them in dry, and wipe the lid before you open it. The [garden bench with storage comparison](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench-with-storage) is the product table. This page stays with fit and damp, from the listing sizes and the Eden care sheet on 21 October 2026. We did not soak a cushion set. Litres do not close the lid

Volume is the wrong first number. A long, shallow bench can print 265 L and still refuse a thick stack that would drop into a taller chest. Stack the pads, measure height, length, and depth, and leave a little air space. If the stack is taller than the cavity, the lid will not close. DIY Garden’s rule of thumb is about 150 L for cushions, and about 250 L over about 140 cm wide for long tools. Another box guide says about 150 L for two lounger pads and about 200 L for a two-seater set. Both are orientation. A 265 L Eden still has only about 38 cm of internal height. Material choice stays on resin or wood.

What fits in the kept listings

Keter UK publishes Eden internal 128 × 50 × 38 cm. A 40 cm stack will not clear that lid. A thin bench pad can lie along the 128 cm. A long handle will not stand. The Signature’s usable line is 126 × 52 × 38 cm. Ignore the conflicting 21 cm figure. Olsen prints internal height 34 cm, so a pad that clears Eden can fail there. Kentwood is about 81.6 × 44.6 × 56.6 cm: taller, but only about 82 cm long, and it is a sit-on chest. Marvel+ is 114.4 × 40 × 51.2 cm, so a cushion deeper than 40 cm will not go in. Reviews already go both ways. The patio seat chest lists 227 L and no internal centimetres. Format and the lock are on the garden storage bench buying guide.

A wet lid and a closed box

After rain, wipe the box before you open it. A wet lid tips water onto the top cushion, which owners describe on the Eden pool and on Olsen. Do the wipe even when the listing says weatherproof. Put only dry cushions in. A closed plastic box will not dry a damp pad, and warm air can leave condensation under the lid. One Marvel+ owner treats droplets that way and says the closed box will not finish the drying. That is one box, not a test of all eight. Do not line the interior in sealed plastic. Ventilated and dry is a product line, not a week of Welsh rain. Eden has no gas strut, so you hold the lid. Flammables and children inside the box are on how to assemble a garden storage bench.

When the bench is the wrong cupboard

Olsen’s 25 kg figure is the internal load, separate from the 150 kg seating line. A heavy outdoor set can meet 25 kg while the seat limit is unused. Weigh the stack if the cushions are the thick, boxed kind. Do not copy 25 kg onto the Eden. Some Marvel+ reviews say a cushion set would not fit. That is a reason to measure, not to force the lid. Two rollers for four sockets show up in the same pool, which matters only if you need to move the box to a drier corner. If you cannot keep the fabric dry, the bench is the wrong cupboard and the cushions belong indoors. A bench that fits in July can still be the wrong place in January if the lid keeps arriving wet and you will not wipe it.

Common questions

Will a 265 L bench take a stack of lounge pads if the internal height is 38 cm?
Only if the stack is under about 38 cm once it is piled the way you will store it. Keter UK’s Eden cavity is 128 × 50 × 38 cm. The litres do not add height. A 45 cm stack holds the lid open on that Eden and on the Signature’s similar cavity.
Why might a taller chest with fewer litres hold a thick pad that a long bench will not?
Because the pad fails on height, not on volume. Kentwood is 190 L with about 56 cm of internal height. Eden is 265 L with 38 cm of internal height. A thick seat pad can drop into the Kentwood and still be too tall for the Eden, while a long bench cushion can lie in the Eden and be too long for the Kentwood’s 82 cm.
The patio seat chest is 227 L. Can you assume the cushions fit?
No. The listing does not publish internal centimetres, and the external dimension order conflicts. 227 L is not a cavity you can tape against. Until you measure the delivered box, you do not know whether the stack clears the lid.
What should you do when rain is sitting on the lid?
Wipe the box with a cloth before you open it, which is the Eden care line. Otherwise the water on the lid runs onto the top cushion. Do that even when the page says weatherproof or ventilated and dry. Those words are not a test that the lid sheds water away from the contents.
Olsen allows 25 kg inside. Do heavy outdoor cushions count?
Yes. The 25 kg line is the internal load. The 150 kg line is combined seating. A heavy cushion set counts toward the 25 kg. The other listings do not print this split, so do not apply 25 kg to them.
