Garden storage bench buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a patio without a shed, cushions or short tools, and an amazon.co.uk page that promises 265 L, lockable, and a single kilogram figure. That is not enough to buy. A [garden bench with storage](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench-with-storage) can be a backed seat about 84–90 cm high or a sit-on chest about 57 cm high, and those two jobs do not share one litre number. This guide is the order of checks: format, then internal centimetres, then which kilogram you are reading, then lock and assembly, and only then the 19 October 2026 shelf prices. A named match is on the [best garden storage bench](/hub/garden-furniture/garden-bench-with-storage/sub/garden-bench-with-storage-best) page.

Bench or sit-on chest

Start with the silhouette, not the litres. A storage bench here has a back and an external height around 84–90 cm: Keter Eden at 140 × 60 × 84 cm on Keter UK, Olsen & Smith at 60 × 130 × 90 cm, Signature around 89 cm. A sit-on chest is different. Kentwood is about 57.7 cm high; Marvel+ is about 57 cm. The lid is the seat and there is no back. A £44 Kentwood and a £139 Eden both claim seating, yet one is a short chest and the other is a two-person bench. If you need a backrest, the chest is the wrong shortlist.

Internal centimetres, then litres

Litres do not tell you whether a long handle will stand. Keter UK publishes Eden internal 128 × 50 × 38 cm. A handle taller than about 38 cm has to lie flat. DIY Garden’s rule of thumb pairs about 250 L with a width over about 140 cm for long tools. That tip is orientation, not a lab result. Olsen prints internal height 34 cm. Signature shows 38 cm and a conflicting 21 cm line you should ignore. Kentwood internal is about 56.6 cm high but only about 82 cm long. Marvel+ internal is 114.4 × 40 × 51.2 cm. The patio seat chest lists 227 L and no internal centimetres. Use Keter UK: external 140 × 60 × 84 cm. Do not treat beige Eden’s 33.07 inch line, about 84 cm, as the sitting plane. Cushion damp is on garden storage bench for cushions.

Which kilogram you are reading

Olsen splits 150 kg combined seating and 25 kg internal load. A heavy cushion stack can meet the 25 kg cap while the seating figure is unused. Other listings give one maximum: Eden 250 kg, Signature 272 kg, Kentwood brown 110 kg, Marvel+ 219.99 kg, patio seat chest 227 kg. Rosewood Kentwood has no maximum-weight line. BS EN 581-2:2015 uses a 110 kg basis and does not weather-test a British winter. None of these eight listings state an EN 581 test, so a printed kilogram is a maker claim. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 still require a safe product of satisfactory quality.

Lock and how it goes together

Lockable usually means a hasp. Keter UK states Eden’s lock is not included, and piston assisted is no, so do not copy gas-strut language onto Eden. Olsen states a 3-digit combination padlock is supplied. Kentwood is lockable without a confirmed padlock on the brown listing. Keter UK says Eden needs two people, about 50 minutes, and a screwdriver. Olsen’s listing also names a screwdriver. Prefer that over a third-party line that says no tools. Kentwood brown claims a tool-free build at about 5.7 kg. Signature states instructions in French. Marvel+ has conflicting booklet lines, so check the carton on the day. A wet lid, and what stays out of the box, are on how to assemble a garden storage bench.

What the amazon.co.uk prices were on 19 October 2026

Only after format, centimetres, kilograms, and the lock should you compare money. On the 19 October 2026 raw: Kentwood brown £44.45 and rosewood £47.62; Marvel+ £74.01; Olsen £119.99; Signature £136.00; Eden grey £139.00; patio seat chest £150.00; Eden beige £162.50. Grey and beige Eden share 4.4 from 14,228 reviews. The Kentwood colours share 4.6 from 414. Signature’s 14,230 line overlaps Eden names. A shared pool is not three independent products. All eight kept listings are resin or polypropylene.

Common questions

Is a garden storage bench the same product as a sit-on storage chest?
No. In this amazon.co.uk set, a storage bench has a back and an external height around 84–90 cm. A sit-on chest such as Kentwood or Marvel+ is about 57–58 cm high, the lid is the seat, and there is no back. Both store items and claim seating, but they are different patio jobs and should not share one shortlist.
Why do litres fail when the internal height is about 38 cm?
Litres measure volume. Eden’s published internal height is 38 cm, so a long tool handle or a thick cushion stack taller than that will not stand under the lid. You have to measure the object against length, depth, and height. A 265 L claim can still fail a single tall item.
Which kilogram figure is seating and which is the load inside?
Only Olsen prints both clearly: 150 kg combined seating and 25 kg inside. Most other listings give one maximum. Read the scope on the page. Do not treat any of those figures as a BS EN 581 test result. The listings do not state that standard.
Does lockable mean a padlock is in the box?
Usually not. Eden is lockable with the lock not included. Olsen states a combination padlock is supplied. Kentwood is lockable without a confirmed padlock in the carton on the brown listing. Buy the padlock as a separate check unless the listing says it is included.
Grey Eden’s amazon.co.uk page prints several dimension lines. Which ones match Keter UK?
Use Keter UK and Argos: external 140 × 60 × 84 cm and internal height 38 cm (internal 128 × 50 × 38 cm). Do not rely on the conflicting Amazon table alone, and do not read the 7.28 inch seat-height line as the sitting plane.
