Do solar path lights work in winter?

Updated: 22 October 2026

You bought a pack because the listing said 8–12 hours, and by mid-December the path is dark again before you have locked the back door. Do solar path lights work in winter? They can still mark an edge for part of the evening. They do not keep an all-night promise when the charge never filled. This page is that limit for the packs on the [solar path light comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-path-light). It does not pick a winner. Peter F. read the runtime bullets and public UK explanations on 22 October 2026. We did not run a December lamp test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the hour bullet is assuming

Every runtime here is a listing claim after the charge the bullet names. Most packs say about 8–12 hours after 6–8 hours of sun, often from a 600 mAh cell. TuyLuxe says up to 16 hours. UME says up to 18 after a full charge, and does not state a cell. Airoieak prints both 6–12 and 8–10 hours. Those longer lines are the same class of claim: a full charge, not a British weekday in November. YiLaie is the only listing that says cloud may cut brightness and runtime. Its 12–18 hours come from a sealed 1000 mAh cell, which is not a December guarantee. Torchtree asks for one to two sunny days before first use. A tab left in, or a switch left off, is an install fault on the how to install page, not a season.

A short day, then a cloudy one

Homebuilding puts winter daylight at roughly 9am to 4pm, and shorter further north. That span is not six hours of direct sun on a path-light cap. A rule of thumb is 6–8 hours of direct sun for an 8–12 hour evening. It was not measured on these packs. The published hours do not agree. Ideal Home’s picture of a short overcast day is a dimmer, shorter evening. Which? found other lights lasting until morning, and some lasting about an hour. Those tests are not these ASINs. Do not average them onto the UME or the Torchtree. The panel is on the fitting. Put the whole stake or disk in south-facing open sky. Diffuse cloud can trickle a charge. Deep shade does not.

Cold, and whether to leave them out

Cold is the second cut. Ideal Home’s account is that cold makes the cell hold less, so a winter evening can look dim after a bright afternoon. One UK review of the Airoieak says a cold Scottish winter was hard on the battery. That stays on that pack. Leave the lights out if you still want a marker, and bring them in if you do not. IP65, IP68, and the words waterproof or water resistant are listing claims. A 1000 mAh cell does not overturn the short day. YiLaie is the only named cell of that size, at £29.99 for four, and the same listing says cloud can cut the night.

A marker for part of the evening

A glow at the edge of a lawn for the first part of a winter evening is the job. An all-night run, a drive at midnight, and anything you would call security are not. Dusk near 4pm does not turn a path cap into a flood. Solpex reviews that blame weak output on poor weather, and Torchtree reviews that mention shorter runs on low-sun nights, are that gap beside the hour bullet. If the path has to stay readable after a run of British winter evenings, neither form here replaces a proper light, and 230 V work belongs with an electrician. Open sky beats a shadow. It does not create sun hours. Shape and colour, before an hour bullet, are on the buying guide.

Common questions

Do solar path lights work in a British winter?
They can glow for part of the evening if the panel sees some sky. They often will not match an 8–12 hour listing, because that bullet assumes a long charge. UK sources disagree on the resulting hour, from about an hour to through until morning on other products, and those tests are not these packs.
Why does the listing say 8–12 hours if mine is off by mid-evening?
The bullet is a full-charge claim, often after 6–8 hours of sun. A short, cloudy December day does not provide that input. Up to 16 hours and up to 18 hours on the TuyLuxe and the UME are the same kind of claim, not a winter promise.
Do they charge on a cloudy day, or only in direct sun?
Bright cloud can give a partial charge and a shorter evening. Direct sun for several hours is what the full-runtime bullets assume. Deep shade, including a north fence or a shrub over the cap, is a different case. The YiLaie listing is the one that says cloud may cut brightness and runtime.
Should I bring path lights indoors from November to February?
Bring them in if you do not need a marker. If you still want the path edged, Ideal Home’s line is that waterproof solar lights can stay out, with a shorter, dimmer evening. The IP codes on this set remain listing claims, not certificates we have seen.
Does a 1000 mAh cell guarantee a December night?
No. The YiLaie is the only named 1000 mAh cell here, and the same page says cloud can cut the runtime. The cell is sealed, so you are not upgrading it yourself. Open sky still decides the charge.
What should I check before I decide the pack is faulty?
Confirm the tab is out, the switch is on if there is one, the film is off, and the panel is in open sky. A new Torchtree wants one to two sunny days before you judge it. If those are done and a dark week follows, you are seeing the season, not automatically a dead pack.
