Solar stake lights vs ground lights

Updated: 22 October 2026

You can picture both fittings and you still cannot choose. One is a row of lanterns standing above the grass. The other is a line of flat disks that almost disappear by day. Solar stake lights vs ground lights is that one decision. This page does not rank the whole [solar path light comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-path-light), and it does not tell you how to set the switch. Prices are captured amazon.co.uk shelf prices. Peter F. compared the forms in this set on 22 October 2026. We did not measure lumens. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A row you can see above the grass

Buy a stake when you want the fitting visible by day and a head above the grass. The tall lantern is the UME, listed at about 6.3 × 6.3 × 53.3 cm, 3000 K, 8 lumens, water resistant with no IP code, £39.89, and 4.9 from only 18 ratings. The Solpex is a cold white pole-and-spike pack at 5000 K. Reviews call its 2,000 lumen bullet a glow. The GIGALUMI is a flickering flame, waterproof with no IP code, and 4.5 from 8,250 ratings. A flame row is décor, not step lighting, and no stake here is fall protection. The TuyLuxe is the shape in between: a short L-shaped warm white head, four at £13.29, IP65, 600 mAh, and 4.4 from 79 ratings. It is not a glass lantern and it is not a disk. Colour, the IP digit, and review weight are on the buying guide.

A disk that sits in the ground

Buy a flush disk when a spike would be kicked or mown and you accept light at ground level. LOTMOS disks are about 7 × 7 × 1.8 cm, the btfarm about 7.5 × 7.5 × 2 cm, and the YiLaie about 10 × 10 × 2.3 cm. That low head is less likely to snap. It is not a surface to stand on. A disk throws a pool at the edge. LOTMOS reviewers sometimes found disks stronger than upright stakes, so height is not brightness. Torchtree is 4.6 from 2,496 ratings at £13.22. btfarm is 4.5 from 2,236 at £16.56. Skip a disk if long grass would swallow a 2 cm head, or if you need lanterns seen from the house. Who should buy the heavy-review disks is on the best solar path lights page.

Panel, puddle, and the shape that is neither

A panel on a stake can be angled toward the sun. A panel in a flat disk is more easily shaded by a tussock, a pot, or the lip of a drive. That is a placement limit, not a measured lumen gap. Move it into open sky before you swap shape. Most disks here, and the Solpex and TuyLuxe stakes, state IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets under IEC 60529. The YiLaie states IP68 and a 1000 mAh cell, at £29.99 for four. That immersion claim is useful in a puddle. It is not a reason to bury the panel, and reviews say the body is sealed. The GIGALUMI and the UME print no IP code. The Airoieak does not belong in either column: an eight-pack title, a four-pack fence-light name, IP68 against IPx4, and 4.6 from 14 ratings.

Which form on which edge

Choose a stake lantern, or the TuyLuxe’s short L head, when the route is grass or a border and you want the fitting seen above it. Choose a flush disk when the fitting must not stick up and a ground-level pool is enough. Choose neither if you need a flood, a safe step, or a path that stays bright after a run of British winter evenings. Neither form in this set replaces a wired bollard for that job. Mains work at 230 V belongs with a registered electrician. How the spike or the tape actually goes in is on the install page.

Common questions

Do stake lights or ground disks show a path more clearly?
A stake shows a vertical row you can see above grass. A disk shows a low pool at the edge and can disappear in long grass. LOTMOS reviewers sometimes found disks stronger than upright stakes, so height is not the same thing as brightness. Pick the shape for the edge you have, not for a lumen league.
Which shape survives a lawn that gets walked on or mown?
A flush disk is less likely to be kicked or mown than a tall spike. It is still not a surface to stand on. Torchtree reviews say not to step on the disk. A stake on a play lawn or a mowing strip is the one that gets snapped.
Is a flame stake a path light?
It is garden décor with a large review sample. The GIGALUMI reads as a line of flames, and reviewers say it is not a work light. Do not use it to make a step safe.
Does a flat panel charge worse than a panel on top of a stake?
It can, when a tussock or a drive lip shades a panel that sits at ground level. A stake head is easier to angle into open sky. Both still fail under a shrub or a north fence, and neither has a separate panel on a lead.
What is the TuyLuxe shape if it is not a lantern and not a disk?
It is a short L-shaped warm white head on a stake, sold as a four-pack. It suits a low border marker on loose soil. Seventy-nine ratings is a short sample beside the disk packs with thousands of reviews.
Where does the Airoieak pack fit?
It does not, until the listing agrees. Pack size, IP68 versus IPx4, and a fence-light set name are in conflict. Leave it out of both the stake column and the disk column.
