Do solar lanterns work in winter in the UK?

Updated: 22 October 2026

The lantern worked in August, and the first grey week in December it is dark before you finish the washing up. That is a British winter, not proof the LED has died. Do solar lanterns work in winter in the UK? They can, for fewer hours, if the panel still sees some direct sun. None of the ten listings in our [solar lantern comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-lantern) was measured here from November to February. A 12-hour, 35-hour or 80-hour bullet is not that measurement. They work, for a shorter evening

Ideal Home’s answer is yes, with shorter evenings. The sun is lower and a cold cell holds less. Which? saw some lights last until morning after a sunny winter day, and some last about an hour. Cloud is not zero, and an overcast day still harvests something. Face the panel south and watch the new midday shadow. A June-sunny fence can be in the house’s shadow at noon in December. Where to stand the panel is on where to put a solar lantern.

Do not treat the hour count on the box as a winter result

Repeating a summer bullet as a December promise is how a working lantern gets called broken. SUBOOS lists 12 hours and up to 15. Mesqool lists 35 hours. Lepwings lists 80 hours in eco mode. GEARLITE lists up to 15 hours after 4 hours of sun. Yaolon lists 6 to 8 hours. Lanktoo’s field says 6 hours, and a bullet goes up to 150 on the lowest setting. None of that is a UK winter test of that ASIN. One SUBOOS text says the beam drops after about 90 minutes unless you fit batteries. Two UK texts say Lanktoo’s sheet rules solar out for daily use.

A grey week needs a second charger

If USB or a crank brings the light back, the panel was short of sun. If nothing charges, or the cell swells or smells hot, stop using it. Panel-only rows have no indoor fallback: GEARLITE, CECOMBINE, Moman and Yaolon. Mesqool has a crank and USB. Lepwings, Yonktoo, Lanktoo and Miniature Masterworks have USB. SUBOOS has USB and an AA slot. One Lepwings buyer got about ten minutes after eight hours of sun from flat. Lepwings’ 6000 mAh cell still needed the cable. GEARLITE’s 800 mAh cell is a small store for a flame.

Leaving it outside is allowed, and it will still struggle

Ideal Home says leave solar lights out, or bring them in if you will not use them. Leaving one on the table does not lengthen the day. Cold and dirt cut a weak sun, and a new midday shadow can cover a September spot. Wipe the panel. USB camping lanterns can charge indoors from the wall. Glass will not fill a panel, so use the port. IP65 is a stronger weather claim than a blank water-resistant line, and it is still not an all-night December run. The code is explained in the solar lantern buying guide.

Common questions

Do they work at all in a British winter?
Yes, for fewer hours, if the panel gets some direct sun. Ideal Home describes shorter, dimmer evenings and colder cells. Which? saw everything from a light that lasted until morning after a sunny winter day to a light that lasted about an hour. That spread is why a summer bullet is not your forecast.
Why is the light dim after about an hour?
Often because the cell stored less than the box implied. A low December sun and cloud do that. On the SUBOOS, one UK text saw the beam drop after about 90 minutes even as a general complaint, and batteries were the workaround. Check the charge before you assume the LED has failed.
Do they charge when it is cloudy?
They charge less, not nothing. An overcast day harvests far less than a bright one. You may still see only a short glow that evening. A second charger matters more in a run of grey days than on a single bright Saturday.
Should the panel face south?
Yes, and check the shadow at midday in winter, not the shadow you remember from June. Face the panel south and wipe it. The Solar Centre’s winter page is about that new shade.
Can I leave a lantern out all winter?
You can. Ideal Home says leave them out or bring them in if you will not use them. They will still run shorter. Wipe the panel. An IP65 claim is a better reason to leave a fitting out than a blank water-resistant line, and neither claim is an all-night guarantee.
Which of these lanterns can I charge indoors when the week is grey?
Mesqool, by crank or USB. Lepwings, Yonktoo, Lanktoo and Miniature Masterworks by USB. SUBOOS by USB or by the battery slot reviewers call AA. GEARLITE, CECOMBINE, Moman and Yaolon are panel only, so indoors they do not fill unless you take them back out into the sun.
Is a short run a fault?
Not by itself. Compare it with a proper charge. If USB or a crank restores a long evening, the panel was short of sun. If nothing charges, or the pack swells or smells hot, stop using it. A missing dusk switch on a camping lantern is not a winter fault. Those rows were manual in summer too.
Does a bigger milliamp-hour figure guarantee a December night?
No. Lepwings lists 6000 mAh and still needed USB after a day in the sun produced minutes of light in one UK text. GEARLITE’s 800 mAh flame can look lovely for a while and still fade. The figure is a cell size on a listing, not a winter runtime.
