Where to put a solar lantern

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have just unboxed a solar lantern and you want it on the table before dark. It stays off for three ordinary reasons: the panel never saw the sun, the switch is wrong, or a porch light tells the sensor it is still daytime. This is where to put a solar lantern from the ten listings in our [solar lantern comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-lantern). The steps are placement, not a ranking. Put the panel where the sun actually lands

Face the panel south, towards open sky, and keep the eaves, trees and fences off it. The Solar Centre’s mosaic sheet says south-facing, no shade, and do not charge behind glass. Peel any film before you judge the lantern. GEARLITE’s bullet says not to site the flame pair under the eaves. Moman wants the panels towards the sun, at a suggested 1.8 to 2.5 metres. A porch roof is often why a wall lantern never fills. None of these ten has a panel that comes off.

Keep night light off the sensor

A sunny panel can still stay off. GEARLITE, Moman and Yaolon use a light sensor or a PIR. A porch lamp or a street lamp can mimic daytime. Cover the sensor in the dark. If the lantern wakes, move it. Yaolon’s all-night mode failed for one UK buyer when other lights came on. SUBOOS, Yonktoo, Lanktoo, Lepwings, Mesqool and Miniature Masterworks have no dusk sensor. Switch those on.

Charge it before you trust the first night

A new cell is often not full, and the sheets disagree. GEARLITE says the switch must be on before first use. Solar Centre manuals quote about six to eight hours of direct sun with the switch on. Festive Lights says 36 to 48 hours. A Gardeners’ World note on a steel globe, not one of these ASINs, says about 48 hours switched off. Follow the sheet in your box. One Moman box had no sheet, so the modes were easy to miss. Glass is a poor charge. Use USB indoors when there is a port: Mesqool, Lepwings, Yonktoo, Lanktoo, Miniature Masterworks and SUBOOS have one. GEARLITE, CECOMBINE, Moman and Yaolon do not. A short winter day is on do solar lanterns work in winter.

A tent light and a wall lantern are not placed the same way

A camping lantern charges in the day and lights wherever you hang it at night. Leave it in the tent porch and the panel sits in shade. Charge it in the sun, or from USB, then hang it. The Mesqool comes on when you pull the top up. A wall lantern is the opposite: the screw position is the charge position. Moman at 1.8 to 2.5 metres and Yaolon on its plate need a drill, not an electrician. Yaolon is listed at 3.7 V. Call an electrician for mains, a buried cable or a junction box. The weather claim sits in the solar lantern buying guide if you are still choosing.

Common questions

Which way should the panel face?
South, into open sky, clear of the eaves, a fence and the tree that shades the patio after lunch. Moman’s four-sided panels still need that wall to see the sun. A camping lantern can lie on a sunny table while it charges and then move. A wall lantern cannot.
Can it sit under a porch or a tree?
Only if the panel still gets direct sun. GEARLITE’s bullet says not to site the flame pair under the eaves. A porch roof and a dense tree are the usual reasons a sensor lantern stores too little for the evening.
Why does it stay off when the porch light is on?
The sensor thinks it is daytime. That applies to GEARLITE’s dusk sensor and to the wall sconces. Cover the sensor when it is dark. If the lantern then comes on, move it or switch the other lamp off. A manual camping lantern is not doing this. Its switch is simply off, or the cell is flat.
How long is the first charge?
The sheets disagree, so use yours. Solar Centre guides talk about six to eight hours of direct sun with the switch on. Festive Lights talks about 36 to 48 hours. A Gardeners’ World globe note, not in this comparison, says a long charge switched off. GEARLITE wants the switch on before first use.
Should the switch be on while it charges?
On the GEARLITE, yes, before you rely on the first night. On a brand whose sheet says off, follow that sheet. Do not copy a 48-hour switched-off rule onto a lantern whose instructions say the opposite. If there are no instructions, as in one Moman box, try the modes before you return it.
Can I charge it on a windowsill?
Glass blocks a useful charge, which is the Solar Centre Lancaster FAQ and the Festive Lights note, not a test of these ten ASINs. Use USB indoors when the model has a port. Panel-only lanterns need to go outside in the sun for that first fill.
Where does a camping lantern go at night versus in the day?
In the day, in the sun or on a cable. At night, on the hook, the magnet or the table where you need to see. Leaving it in the tent all afternoon does not charge it. SUBOOS, Yonktoo, Lanktoo, Lepwings, Mesqool and Miniature Masterworks are all manual.
Do I need an electrician for a wall lantern?
No. Moman and Yaolon are solar sconces. You still drill and use the screws, and Yaolon is listed at 3.7 V. An electrician is for mains wiring, a buried cable or a junction box. A flat camping lantern on a table is not that job either.
