Solar fairy lights in winter

Updated: 22 October 2026

The string that ran until you went to bed in August is dark by half past seven in November, and you are wondering if it has failed. Often it has not. A 6–8 hour charge and an 8–14 hour glow is a bright-day line on these listings, and a short British day will not fill it. This page is the winter limit and the checks that are still worth doing. Prices and ratings for the eight sets are on the [solar fairy lights comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-fairy-lights).

What a short day does to the claim

Read the bullet as a summer sentence. Kolpop, both btfarm packs, bitjam, and Lezonic pair about 6–8 hours of charge with 8–14 hours of light if the weather allows. cshare says up to 8–12 hours when fully charged. HHMTAKA says 8–10 hours, and its bullet also claims the panel still charges in winter or rain. That last line is a claim on the page, not a result we measured. Ideal Home quote an electrician who says shorter, weaker days mean a dimmer light or a shorter evening, and a cold cell holds less charge. Which?, on other solar garden lights, sees a spread from about an hour to all night after winter sun. Those results are not these ASINs. Expect a few hours on a clear November afternoon, and less under a week of cloud. How to start a new set is how to use solar fairy lights.

Checks that are not the weather

Before you blame the month, repeat the first-night checks. The switch has to be on, or these listings do not charge. A transit film left on the cell blocks the charge as surely as a week of rain. The panel has to see sky, not the back of a fence that only caught sun in June. Glass is a poor charger. Festive Lights say wipe the panel with a dry or damp cloth, not an abrasive. A film of leaves or winter grime is enough to steal the little daylight you have. A security light or a street lamp on the sensor can hold the string off after dark, which feels like a flat battery and is not one. Cover the panel. If the LEDs come on, move the panel out of that light. Length, cell size, and IP codes are the solar fairy lights buying guide.

What these listings’ reviews say about cold months

The 6 m btfarm copper pack draws a plain winter complaint: charging is weaker when the days are poor. One set in those reviews did not light after two sunny days, which may be weather or a fault, and you cannot tell from a single comment. bitjam reviews include sets still working after months, for less time when the sun is weak. HHMTAKA’s winter-or-rain bullet sits next to mixed reviews: all night for some people, dim for others, and one failure after a week indoors. Kolpop’s large review set praises hedges on dull days and also includes deaths after a few days or two months. November does not explain a set that arrived dead in July.

Leave them out, or send them back

Leave them out if a few hours after dusk is enough for the hedge, or bring them in if you do not need them until March. Bringing them in means a dry shed, the switch off so they do not hunt for light all winter, and the panel uncovered when you put them back in spring. A windowsill will not rebuild an 8–14 hour charge through glass. IP65 is still jets, not a pond. Send it back when the checks pass and the string is still dead or half-dead inside the return window. A set that smoked, scorched, or failed in high summer is a reason to use the seller. A dead set is WEEE: decorative lighting goes to a recycling centre or a retailer take-back, not the household rubbish.

Common questions

Should a new set still do 8–14 hours in November?
Treat 8–14 hours as the bright-day bullet, not as a November specification. These listings ask for about 6–8 hours of charge before that run, and a short UK afternoon will not supply it. Which? already sees other solar lights last from about an hour to all night after winter sun. Those lights are not these ASINs. Plan on a shorter evening.
Is a string that dies after a week a winter problem?
No, if it never worked through a sunny week with the switch on. Kolpop and bitjam reviews include failures after days that are not pinned to November. A two-pack with one dark string is the same pattern. Weaker light and an earlier switch-off, with the LEDs still working, is the short day. That one you can leave out.
Does cloud still charge the panel?
Some light gets through, and it is less than direct sun. A grey week can look like a flat cell. Kolpop reviews mention charging on dull days when the panel is angled at the sun. One clear day, with the face wiped and the sensor in the open, is the fair test before you decide the set has failed.
Will a security light or a street lamp stop it coming on?
It can. Nearby lamps hold the sensor in daytime mode, which Festive Lights warns about. bitjam reviews include sets that come on in the day and stay off at night. Move the panel, cover it as a test, and only then decide the cell is finished. Do not add another lamp to try to help it.
Should I tilt the panel?
Aim it at open sky and toward the middle of the day if you can. PowerBee suggests facing south and about 30 degrees on a spike. That angle is their tip, not a figure on these panels. A panel flat on a north fence will do worse than the same panel stood clear of the fence, even before you argue about degrees.
