Solar fairy lights for trees and fences

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing at a hedge or a panel fence with a coil of tiny LEDs, and you want points of light after dusk, not a path you can walk by. The panel still has to stand in sun the foliage does not cover, and copper will kink if you tension it like a washing line. This page stays on that job. Measure the lit length against the shrub or the bay before you worry about modes. The eight sets, with prices, are the [solar fairy lights comparison](/hub/garden-decor/solar-fairy-lights).

A shrub, a hedge, or a fence

Fairy lights here are decoration. A 50-LED strand will not show you the edge of a lawn. It will show you the shape of a shrub if you stand back from the house. A small bush or one young tree is a 5 m or 6 m job. cshare is 5 m of copper and 50 LEDs. bitjam is 6 m of rubber and 60 LEDs plus a stated 2 m lead, with an IP65 claim. The btfarm copper two-pack is 6 m of lights and 60 LEDs on each string, plus a 2 m lead. A long hedge is Kolpop’s 24 m PVC string, 240 LEDs, about 10 cm apart, IP65 claimed on all parts. The bullet does not list a stake. Lezonic and GCCATE are the listings whose length figures disagree with themselves. Do not mark a fence out in metres from those titles. Length and IP codes in general are the solar fairy lights buying guide.

Loose wire, clear panel

Start at the trunk or at the first fence post and spiral outward, or drape the top wire of a panel and let the LEDs hang in shallow scallops. Leave slack. A loop you can pinch between two fingers is enough spare for the branch to move. Garden Lights Direct say measure first, use soft ties on plants, and avoid staples. A staple through copper into bark pinches the sheath and wounds the tree. The panel does not go in the middle of the hedge you just wove. Festive Lights tell you to face the panel south and keep it unshaded. bitjam and both btfarm packs state a 2 m lead. cshare does not give you a long escape from a dense crown. Kolpop does not state a separate lead, so put the panel at an end of the hedge that actually sees the sky. The first charge and a safe wrap are how to use solar fairy lights.

Flower covers on a trellis or an arch

HHMTAKA is the set that changes the look: 9.5 m, 50 blossom covers, plastic wire, warm white at 2,700 K, £12.99, 4.8 from 117 reviews. The bullet says light rain and does not give an IP code. A detailed review describes silicone flowers and a tiltable panel. Another calls the glow a bit dim. Buy this when the arch or the trellis should read as blossom, and keep it for light rain rather than a wet hedge in January.

What stays a different job

A pond, a water feature, or a butt needs a light rated for immersion. IP65 is jets, not a submerged fitting, and waterproof with no code is less than that. Stop at the edge of the water. A new outdoor socket or a damaged mains fitting is an electrician’s job under BS 7671. Staking a solar panel is not that circuit. If you still have not chosen between 6 m of rubber and 24 m of PVC, use the buying guide before you wrap anything. A set that splits its sheath on the fence comes down. It does not get taped and left through a storm.

Common questions

How do I wrap a small tree without snapping the wire?
Spiral loosely from a branch you can reach, using a 5 m copper string such as cshare or one 6 m btfarm string. Bend the wire and leave slack at each fork. Do not pull it taut, and do not staple it into the bark. A soft tie is enough if a loop slips. Stop when you can see the points of light from the path.
Can I weave a hedge, or does that shade the panel?
You can drape the face of the hedge so the wire can lift for the trimmer. The panel must stay in open sky, outside the foliage and outside the cutting line. Kolpop’s 24 m run is the length reviews put through hedges, and its box list does not name a stake. A panel pushed into the hedge will charge as if it were under a bench.
How do I run lights along a fence panel?
Drape the wire so it sags between fixings. bitjam’s 6 m rubber string, or one 8 m btfarm string, can cover a bay, with the stated 2 m lead taking the panel to sun. The 8 m pack includes screws, not a named stake. A north-facing fence can take the lights. The panel goes on the sunny side.
Which length is a shrub, and which is a long hedge?
A shrub is about 5–6 m of lights: cshare at 5 m, or one 6 m btfarm copper string. A long hedge or pergola is Kolpop at 24 m and 240 LEDs. Do not measure the fence with Lezonic or GCCATE. Their title and their specification fields do not agree, so the parcel is the only length you can trust.
The fence faces north. Where does the panel go?
On the south side of the fence, or anywhere the foliage does not cover the cell. Festive Lights wants that panel unshaded. A stated 2 m lead, on bitjam and the btfarm packs, is the distance you can use. Kolpop does not state a separate lead, so you cannot assume those two metres on that reel.
