Hurricane lantern or chamber oil lamp

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have two shapes open on amazon.co.uk, and both titles say hurricane. One is a steel tank in a frame. The other is a glass font you could stand on a sideboard. A hurricane lantern or chamber oil lamp is a real choice, and the word in the title does not make it for you. Collins defines a hurricane lamp as a paraffin lamp with a glass covering so the flame is not blown out, and treats storm lantern as another name. This page is only that split. What British English means by a hurricane lamp

The useful picture is a flame inside glass, protected from a gust, with a tank you can carry. In this comparison that is the Feuerhand 276, the Redwood HL200, and, with a thinner UK sample, the Fire-Maple Voyager. The 276 is about £44.95, about 530 g, with a 300 ml tank and a 20 hour claim. Feuerhand says keep it outdoors, uncovered, and supervised. The Redwood at about £8.40 is the same family: 398 g, a 10 hour claim, and a hanging hook. UK reviewers find the metal lighter than older lanterns. Storm lantern is the other name, not a safer grade. A 20 hour claim and a 35 hour claim are still separate claims. If you can see a metal tank and a chimney inside a frame, you are in this half. A glass bottle with a short neck is not, however large the word hurricane is printed.

What a chamber lamp is doing instead

A chamber lamp holds the oil in a glass font and uses a chimney as a shade against a draught in a room. The HUAXITRA pair at about £27.59 is two 32 cm table lamps, oil not included. The BDOSM pack is seven 19 cm lamps with spare wick and no reviews in the saved set. The PureBliss pair at about £11.28 still says hurricane in the highlight. UK reviews describe a wick that slips, burns away in seconds, and does not draw. A chimney is not a storm frame. HUAXITRA reviews include a smashed chimney and flanges that bend. The Thous Winds mini at about £28.99 sits beside this split, an 80 ml shelf lamp that buyers found smaller than the photos. Named picks are on best kerosene lamp UK.

When you want the storm lantern

Choose the hurricane when the flame has to survive a garden gust or a hook under a tarp. Feuerhand reviews in the shared pool of 4.4 from 4,334 describe a low flame in the garden and a lantern under canvas, and a cap that leaks if you do not tighten it. The Redwood is that shape at about £8.40 if you have tested the cap. The word hurricane on the box does not make it a 276. Feuerhand will not stand the 276 in a closed room, so it is a poor kitchen-table purchase. Do not cover it to soften the light. Matte black, olive and bronze are one lantern. A colour choice is no longer a type choice.

The lamp that is neither

A Tilley-type lantern is a pressure lamp with a mantle. You preheat it and you pump it. BushcraftUK threads separate that tool from a hurricane wick lamp. Nothing in this amazon.co.uk set is that brighter lantern. A glass chimney on the HUAXITRA does a room job. A framed chimney on the 276 does a wind job, outdoors. The PureBliss pack has borrowed a hurricane title. The Tyenaza, at 1.8 from four ratings and with only French leak notes, is not a storm lantern to fill. Fuel and price sit on the kerosene lamp buying guide.

Common questions

Is a storm lantern the same thing?
Yes. Storm lantern and hurricane lamp are the same idea in British English: glass around the flame, built so a gust does not put it out. It is not a separate, safer grade, and it is not a pressure lantern. The Feuerhand 276 is sold as a hurricane and described by its maker as a cold-blast storm lantern.
Why does a glass pair say hurricane?
Because the title is doing sales work. The PureBliss highlight uses hurricane lamp for two small glass chamber lamps at about £11.28. The reviews describe a short wick that will not draw, which is font behaviour, not a storm frame. HUAXITRA and BDOSM are the same kind of object at 32 cm and 19 cm.
Which one is a table lamp?
The chamber lamp, if you want a flame on a sideboard and you will stay in the room. The HUAXITRA pair is sold as an indoor table lamp, oil not included. It is still a flame that needs ventilation, a wick that UK reviewers say can burn out, and glass that can smash.
Is a Tilley either of these?
No. A Tilley-type lantern is a pressure lamp with a mantle. Bushcraft owners separate it from a hurricane wick lamp because you pump it and it runs hotter and brighter. It is not in this set. Choosing between a 276 and a glass font does not require you to learn that third tool.
Does a glass chimney mean the lamp is windproof?
A chimney steadies a flame against a small draught. On a chamber lamp that is the job of the glass, and it can still sit badly if the flange is bent, as HUAXITRA reviewers found. On a hurricane the chimney sits inside a frame that is meant for weather, which is a different claim. The Thous Winds listing says double-layer and windproof.
