Artificial grass for dogs on a tray or a yard strip

Updated: 21 October 2026

The dog has chosen a kitchen corner or a concrete strip by the back door. Artificial grass for dogs in this set is either a potty pad or a roll a title calls pet friendly. They do not do the same job. A pad lets urine through onto a tray you already own. A roll is a piece of floor. This page stays with toileting, smell and chewing. The full table is the [lawn carpet comparison](/hub/flooring/lawn-carpet). We used the amazon.co.uk listings on 19 October 2026. We did not run a chew test or a smell test. A pad and a roll are different dogs’ floors

The PICK FOR LIFE two-pack is 35.5 cm by 46 cm. The single pad is 46 cm by 58.5 cm. GardenKraft is 4 m by 1 m and tonchean is 1 m by 10 m. Reviews on both pads say liquid goes straight through, and neither box includes a tray. One Petgrow puppy toilet failed because the edges rolled and urine sat underneath. Another buyer’s pups use the mat. Several reviews call the single pad too small, including for a Labrador puppy. Use the pad on a tray. Use a roll on concrete you can lift and hose.

What these two pads actually do

The two-pack, B0B428GWYS, is £14.99, 3.7 from 497 reviews, pile 1.18 in, 380 g. Buyers cut it to a tray they already owned. Some say it will not lie flat. A non-toxic line is not a chew test. The single pad, B08XN8KY7M, is £13.99, 63 holes claimed, 3.4 from 104 reviews, also 380 g. The care field says machine wash and the bullets say hose with mild soap. A review says the back corroded after a shower wash within 30 days. Top Dog Turf sells washable pads from £46.99. That is their pitch, not a test of PICK FOR LIFE. If the pad is still wet on top an hour later, it is holding liquid.

Smell, washing, and loose threads

As Good As Grass says to rinse fresh urine and use an enzyme cleaner once the smell is in. Grass247 says to lift solids, wash with dish soap or a pet-safe cleaner, and rinse the same spot. Those guides are for laid turf, not a certificate for these pads. On the two-pack, detergent helped one buyer. Others still smell it, or the grass falls out in the rinse. Do not put bleach on the fibres. Single-pad reviews describe loose threads as a swallowing risk. If the puppy is mouthing the pad, take it up.

Use a roll when the dog toilets in the yard

GardenKraft’s title says the 4 m by 1 m roll suits dogs. One review is a terrace strip for visiting dogs, not a daily potty trial. The best lawn carpet page treats that 4.5 from 1,912 reviews as the top pick for a hard strip. It is the wrong first buy for a 46 cm tray. Petgrow’s about-20 mm mats claim a self-draining backing, and reviews still describe urine underneath until the mat is lifted. A pet-safe line is not a chew test.

Common questions

Do you need a tray under a dog grass pad?
Yes, if the pad is indoors or on a floor you care about. Both PICK FOR LIFE listings let urine through the holes, and neither box includes a tray. Reviews describe cutting the two-pack to fit a tray the buyer already owned, and putting the single pad in a litter tray. Without that tray, the liquid goes onto whatever is underneath. Outdoor concrete can be that surface only if you are willing to lift the pad and rinse the slab.
Will drainage holes stop the smell?
No. Holes move urine. They do not store it, and they do not cancel odour. UK turf guides say to rinse fresh urine and use an enzyme cleaner once the smell is in the fibres, then to look at drainage if it returns. Pad reviews here still report a smell after a soap rinse. If the smell is under the mat, lift it and clean the tray or the concrete. A fragrance on the blades does not fix a wet backing.
Can you machine-wash the £13.99 pad?
The care field on the 46 cm by 58.5 cm pad says machine wash, and the bullets say hose it with mild soap. A review says the back corroded after a shower wash within 30 days. Those lines do not add up to a safe machine cycle. Hose it, skip the machine, and stop if fibres are shedding into the rinse. The two-pack’s soap rinse helped one buyer and left the smell, or pulled grass out, for others.
What if the dog chews the fibres?
Take the pad up. Loose threads on the single pad are described in reviews as a swallowing risk, and the two-pack can shed grass when it is rinsed. No listing in this set has a chew test, and a pet-friendly bullet is not one. Supervise a puppy that is still mouthing, and do not leave a long loose edge of a roll where the dog can pull it. If chewing is the main habit, a grass pad is a poor choice until that phase passes.
Is a garden roll better than a pad for a yard?
Yes, when the dog toilets on concrete or paving you can hose, and no, when you wanted a tray in the kitchen. GardenKraft at 4 m by 1 m covers a strip and has the large review sample. It is not sold as a potty insert. Petgrow can work as an outdoor toilet in some reviews and fail in others when the edges roll and urine sits underneath. A pad covers a tray, not a yard. A pet-friendly title is not a toilet test.
