Chipboard flooring screws vs tongue and groove screws

Updated: 21 October 2026

The two boxes look alike: both are countersunk and both are gold-ish. Chipboard flooring screws vs tongue and groove screws is a diameter and a place for the head. One screw is about 4 mm and goes through the face into a joist. The other is 3.5 mm and goes through a timber tongue at an angle so the next board can close. Two different screws

A face-fix screw holds a sheet, or a square-edged board, by the face. The head sits in a countersink you can fill or cover. The diameter is about 4.0–4.5 mm, the No. 8 minimum in NHBC’s chipboard clause, driven straight down on the joist line. A tongue-and-groove screw is slimmer, very often 3.5 x 45 mm, with a small head and a partial thread. You drive it at about 30–45 degrees through the tongue of a solid board, so the head finishes below the tongue and the next board’s groove can close. Tongue-Tite’s installation sheet is that method, and it asks for a pre-drill within about 50 mm of a board end. The driving sequence is on the how to screw down floorboards page.

When the 3.5 x 45 mm screw is the one

Use the 3.5 x 45 mm screw when the boards are timber tongue-and-groove, you want the fix hidden, and each screw still reaches a joist. Pre-drill near the end so the tongue does not split. That is the job the Ulti-Mate tongue box is titled for. It is the wrong only screw for 22 mm chipboard: the diameter is below a No. 8, and 45 mm is short of the 55–60 mm practical length. Chipboard does not have a timber tongue you can hide a screw in. A bullet claims the upper thread stops wobble and squeaks. Treat that as the seller’s line. Twelve reviews talk about heads shearing and Torx bits being chewed, not about a measured silence.

When the 4 mm screw is the one

Use about 4 mm, long enough for the board you measured, when you are face-fixing chipboard or softwood to joists. For 18 mm chipboard the match in this set is the Ulti-Mate floorboard screw at 4.2 x 50 mm, partially threaded, £9.99 for 200. The shank slides through the board and the head clamps it. The fischer box is also about 4 mm, and it is not the same decision: 4.0 x 40 mm, fully threaded, 1,200 screws at £19.85, titled as a chipboard screw. Keple’s 3.9 x 58 mm box has thread and metal fields that conflict, so it stays out of the recommendation. Face-fix 22 mm wants about 4 mm at 55–60 mm, which neither 50 mm nor 40 mm quite is.

Which box to open

Open the Ulti-Mate tongue box (B0FXM6D7TL) for a hidden timber tongue, with a drill-driver and a spare T10 bit, not for a chipboard deck. Open the Ulti-Mate floorboard box (B0983NS7BX) for face-fixed 18 mm chipboard or softwood. It is the top pick on the best floorboard screws page because the job and the sample match. Open the fischer box (B0FSDZ9KK9) for about 1.7p a screw on 18 mm chipboard you will clearance-drill. Yellow zinc and blue zinc are indoor coats.

Common questions

What is a tongue-and-groove screw actually for?
It fixes solid tongue-and-groove boards from the tongue, at about 30–45 degrees, so the head sits below the tongue and the next board can close. The usual size is 3.5 x 45 mm, with a small countersunk head and a partial thread. It is not the screw NHBC’s chipboard clause describes, which is at least a No. 8 through the face.
Can you face-fix chipboard with a 3.5 mm screw?
You can drive one through the face, and it is a poor only fixing for a chipboard deck. The gauge is below the No. 8 class, the head is meant for a tongue, and 45 mm is short of the practical length on 22 mm board. Use about 4.0–4.5 mm, long enough for the sheet, when the head sits in the face. Keep 3.5 mm for timber tongues.
Is a fully threaded 4.0 x 40 mm screw a flooring screw?
It is a chipboard screw. The fischer box in this set is fully threaded, 4.0 x 40 mm, and the title does not say floorboard. On 18 mm board, 40 mm meets a 36 mm twice-the-board minimum and is short of 45–50 mm. On 22 mm board it is below 44 mm. A full thread needs a clearance hole or pressure so it pulls the board down instead of jacking it.
Does a secret fix still need the joist?
Yes. The angle through the tongue only hides the head. The point still has to enter a joist or a bearer that carries the board. A screw that finishes in the gap, or only in the edge of a sheet, does not hold the floor. Pre-drill near the end of a board so the tongue does not split while you hunt for that timber.
Which box in this set is which family?
B0FXM6D7TL is the tongue family: Ulti-Mate, 3.5 x 45 mm, partial thread, Torx, £8.99. B0983NS7BX is the face-fix floorboard family: Ulti-Mate, 4.2 x 50 mm, partial thread, £9.99. B0FSDZ9KK9 is a fully threaded chipboard screw, fischer, 4.0 x 40 mm, £19.85, not titled as a floorboard screw.
