Builders bucket size: litres before the brand

Updated: October 2026

The title says 3 gallon, 15 litres and heavy duty in one line. Builders bucket size is the decision that matters first. A 14 or 15 litre pail holds site water and a small sand-and-cement gauge. It does not hold a finished 25 kg bag of gypsum plaster, even though the water for that bag is only about 11–12 litres. The nine amazon.co.uk listings in the [mortar bucket comparison](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/mortar-bucket), priced on 19 October 2026, are small rigid buckets, two flexi tubs and two 45 litre tubs. None is a 25 or 35 litre plasterers' bucket.

What the litres are for

Start with the bag, not the cheapest black pail. In this set, 14 and 15 litres are the water and gauge size: TDBS and Best House at 14 litres, Faithfull and Airflow at 15 litres. That covers a pier or a small repair. It does not cover one 25 kg bag of plaster. B&Q puts the water at about 11–12 litres, and Refina's skim note says 11.5 litres, so the water fits and the finished gauge does not. Refina's X-1 chart states 35 litres for one 25 kg bag, at £57.12 including VAT, and that tub is outside this set. A 45 litre M1SS tub is wide, with rope handles described as a two-person lift. None of the nine states a maximum load. If the job is one bag of plaster, use the plasterers mixing bucket page.

The 3 gallon label

3 gallon on a UK builders' bucket is trade shorthand, not a precise fill. Airflow pairs 3 gallon with 15 litres. Three imperial gallons are about 13.6 litres, so a title that also prints 14 or 15 litres is already rounding. Plan with the litre figure, and leave a margin under the rim. An OX listing calls 25 litres 5 gallon. Five imperial gallons are about 22.7 litres. A 15 litre pail bought for the 12 litres of plaster water matches the water and misses the finished gauge. A 45 litre tub is a wide muck tub two people should lift, not three neat 3 gallon buckets.

Handle, lip, and marks

The handle and the rim fail before the words heavy duty do. A rigid pail here uses a metal wire, sometimes with a grip, and often a pouring lip: the TDBS 14 litre bucket, the Best House packs and the Airflow five-pack. Bent wire is a known complaint. Comments on other Invincible buckets are not a test of this Airflow pack. The M1SS pair states two rope handles and calls that a two-person carry. The single M1SS title says rope and the catalogue says plastic. A flex wall knocks dried material out and carries a full pail of water poorly. That split is the flexi tub or builders bucket page. Faithfull and Airflow state marks. Best House, both TDBS tubs and both M1SS tubs do not.

What the listing must agree with itself

Read the title beside the catalogue. Best House titles say made in the UK and the country field says China. Airflow's bullets say made in Britain and the catalogue country field is absent. The single M1SS title says rope and the catalogue says plastic, and 520 mm does not match a 26 cm width. Faithfull's bullets give 330 mm by 230 mm, the catalogue is 290 x 320 x 390 mm, and the catalogue says a lid the bullets do not describe. All three Best House packs show 4.6 from 356. Do not add those counts. Faithfull's 4.5 from 595 belongs to one listing. The four-pack is about £3.50 a bucket. The Airflow five-pack is about £6.96 a bucket. No listing states a kilogram limit.

Common questions

Is a 15 litre builders' bucket big enough for a 25 kg bag?
No. A 14 or 15 litre bucket holds the water for a 25 kg bag of gypsum plaster, about 11–12 litres on B&Q's guide or 11.5 litres on Refina's skim note, and it does not hold the finished gauge. Refina states 35 litres for one bag on a rigid tub that is not in this amazon set.
What does 3 gallon mean on a UK bucket?
It is the trade label often printed next to 14 or 15 litres. Three imperial gallons are about 13.6 litres, so the two figures are not the same measure. Airflow's Invincible description pairs 3 gallon with 15 litres. Buy and mix to the litre line.
Do I need litre marks inside the bucket?
You need them if that bucket is how you measure sand, cement or water. Faithfull and Airflow state gallon and litre marks. Best House, the TDBS tubs and both M1SS tubs do not. A lip helps pouring. It does not show where a measured litre sits.
Is a metal handle better than rope?
A metal wire with a grip is the usual one-person carry on a 14 or 15 litre pail, and it is the part reviewers say bends. Rope handles on the M1SS pair are a two-person lift on a 45 litre tub. Built-in handles on a flex tub suit a lighter load. Match the handle to who is lifting.
Why do some titles say made in the UK when the country field says China?
The title and the catalogue are not always the same claim. Best House prints made in the UK on the single, the two-pack and the four-pack, and the country of origin is China. Airflow says made in Britain in a bullet and leaves the catalogue country empty. Read both lines.
Is a pack of four small buckets a substitute for one large tub?
No. Four 14 litre Best House buckets at £13.99 are four gauging pails at about £3.50 each. They do not become a 45 litre mixing tub, and they do not become the 35 litre one-bag size Refina states. Buy the pack for several gauges, not for one bag.
When is 45 litres too big to carry?
When one person is expected to walk with it full. HSE sets no safe kilogram for a bucket handle. INDG143 filters, at knuckle height and close to the body, are 25 kg for men and 16 kg for women, and lower if you reach or lift from the floor. The M1SS pair describes a full tub as two people on the ropes.
