SDS plus tile chisel: chuck, width, and bend

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have pulled the skirting in a British kitchen, and the basket is full of bent steel that all claims to be an SDS plus tile chisel. The decision that saves the afternoon is the chuck on the hammer you already own, then the width, then whether you need one length or two. This guide is that order. The [chisel tiles comparison](/hub/flooring-tools-and-accessories/chisel-tiles) holds the seven amazon.co.uk listings, from £9.99 to £16.90. Check the chuck before the basket

Every listing kept here is an SDS-Plus shank. A 13 mm chuck on a combi drill will not hold these bits. If the collar on your hammer is marked SDS-Max, none of the £9.99 to £16.90 blades is the right order. A brand name in a bullet is not a fit certificate. DeWalt's DT6806-QZ, 40 × 250 mm at £21.99 on Screwfix, is an SDS-Plus chisel and still will not fit SDS-Max. Grease the shank so a dry tail does not overheat in the chuck.

40 mm, 75 mm, or 100 mm

Width is a trade-off, not a ladder of quality. About 40 mm suits a tight joint or a small tile and is slower on an open kitchen floor. Screwfix lists the DeWalt DT6806 at 40 × 250 mm for £21.99. About 75 mm is the wide blade in this amazon.co.uk set: WORKPRO and Lebahan at 165 × 75 mm, HPMAISON at 185 × 75 × 17 mm, Nucraft at 250 × 75 mm, and the IVhomeshop and VonLux pairs. A wide crank gets under ordinary ceramic in one pass. Lytool's set is stated as 250 × 40 mm and 280 × 100 mm at £16.14, with 4.6 from 842 ratings. That star line is not two 75 mm tile spades. The wide blade is for scaling.

Bend, length, and how many pieces

Lebahan and HPMAISON state 25°. Nucraft states 15°. WORKPRO, IVhomeshop, and VonLux do not print a number. A steeper bend is easier to tip into the screed if you lean on the hammer. Lebahan at £12.99 and WORKPRO at £11.99 are 165 mm. One Lebahan reviewer found that short across a hallway. Nucraft at £13.90 is the 250 mm single. IVhomeshop pairs 160 mm with 275 mm at £12.99, and VonLux pairs 165 mm with 250 mm at £16.90. A two-piece box at the same £12.99 as one Lebahan is not a stronger bit. Mode and angle are on how to use a tile chisel.

What this guide will not choose for you

Several listings include a UK note of a shank that snapped in roughly 15 minutes to an hour. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 treats durability as part of satisfactory quality, so a bit that fails on first use is a return. This page will not choose the bit for old vinyl, thermoplastic tile, or bitumen adhesive. Those materials can contain asbestos. It will not choose for plasterboard you hope to save. Use the best tile removal chisel page for a short blade, a long one, or two lengths. Use SDS chisel vs bolster if you are still deciding whether to buy a powered bit at all.

Common questions

Will an SDS plus tile chisel fit a DeWalt, Bosch, or Makita hammer?
It fits when that hammer's chuck is SDS-Plus, not because the brand is printed in a bullet. Einhell describes SDS-Plus as about 10 mm with two grooves and SDS-Max as about 18 mm with three, and they do not interchange. Check the collar on the tool you own. A combi drill with a 13 mm chuck will not hold these bits, which matches a UK note on the Nucraft blade.
What is the difference between SDS-Plus and SDS-Max?
SDS-Plus is the smaller shank, about 10 mm, used on the seven listings here and on the DeWalt 40 mm chisel at £21.99. SDS-Max is the larger 18 mm system for heavier hammers. A cranked photo does not tell you which collar you have. If your machine is SDS-Max, leave this basket and buy an SDS-Max bit from the maker's own range.
Is 40 mm or 75 mm better?
Neither is better on every floor. A 40 mm edge, such as the Bosch 40 × 260 mm chisel at £28.06, suits tight joints and small tiles, and it covers less ground on an open kitchen. A 75 mm blade is the wide shape in this set and suits ordinary ceramic, with more risk of catching the next tile or the screed if the edge is not flat.
What does a 15° or 25° bend change?
The bend lets the blade run under the tile instead of stabbing straight down. Lebahan and HPMAISON state 25°, and Nucraft states 15°. Listings that only say cranked or angled do not give you a number to check. A steeper crank can feel easier behind a tile, and it is also easier to tip into the screed if you lean on the hammer.
Do I need hammer-only mode before I buy the bit?
Yes. The bit is meant for hammer-only, with rotation stopped. Duro's sheet says not to use this style of chisel on a machine that cannot lock rotation. A UK review of the HPMAISON bit describes a drill that only spun, and the chisel did not work until the tool could hammer. If your drill has no hammer action, the bit is the wrong purchase.
