How to hang a Spain flag

Updated: October 2026

The flag is already in the packet, and you need it the right way up before the wind gets to a 70 g cloth. How to hang a Spain flag comes down to three checks: horizontal red, yellow, red, rings on the edge that meets the pole, and the flag brought down before a gale. This page does not rank products. Choosing the cloth is the [Spain flag buying guide](/hub/flags/spain-flag/sub/spain-flag-buying-guide). The rows and prices are on the [Spain flag](/hub/flags/spain-flag) comparison. The Products Compared editorial team used public UK hanging notes and the staged listings on 19 October 2026. We did not fly a test flag. The right way up

The Spanish flag is three horizontal stripes. Red is at the top, yellow is in the middle, and red is at the bottom. Each red stripe is half the height of the yellow. La Moncloa states that from the Constitution. If the stripes run vertically, the flag is on its side. If a coat of arms is printed, it sits on the yellow band, nearer the pole than the free end. If the arms are toward the fly, you have the hoist on the wrong edge. The Union Flag diagonal test does not apply. Spain has no diagonal.

Two eyelets on a pole

Most 5×3 flags in this set have two brass eyelets on one short edge. That edge is the hoist. Pass a rope through each eyelet, or clip a fastener in, then hoist and cleat off. A ball bungee is sold separately at about £2.50 to £2.99. Flag Seller specifies 100 mm bungees, and they are not in these packs. Do not cram the cord onto the thin tip of a telescopic pole. Two rings will not hold the fly flat on a wall. Pins through the fly split light polyester.

Four corners and bunting

Runesol is 91 × 152 cm with a brass eyelet in each corner, so you can tie every corner. Leave a little slack so the wind does not tear the rings. Bunting is not a hoist flag. The staged strings are about 10 m with 30 small flags, tied to a fence or a hall wall. There is no eyelet for a halyard. A string across a road or a sign is the point where you ask whoever controls that land.

When to take it down

Do not fly a flag in a storm or a gale, and do not fly a worn flag. The Flag Institute’s July 2024 note gives flag length as a guide of no more than one third of a ground pole’s height. Take the cloth down when the forecast is a gale or the hoist is fraying. An AZ FLAG review says a thin cloth lasted about a month on a pole. That month is one review, not a standard. Wash only as the listing states. In England, GOV.UK treats a plain national flag as one you may fly with the building owner’s permission. The Flags Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 constrain specified official sites, not a house flag.

Three checks before you hoist

Stripes horizontal, red, yellow, red, with any shield toward the rings. Two eyelets go on a pole or a hoist rope. Four eyelets can be tied at every corner, with a little slack. Bring the cloth down before a gale, and wash it only the way that listing states.

Common questions

Which way up is the Spanish flag?
Horizontal stripes, red at the top, yellow in the middle, red at the bottom. The yellow band is twice the height of each red band. Vertical stripes mean the flag is on its side. The Union Flag diagonal test is about a different flag and does not tell you anything about Spain.
Where does the coat of arms sit?
On the yellow stripe, on the half nearer the pole, if the flag has a coat of arms at all. A stripes-only flag is a civil flag and has nothing to align except the bands. If the arms are closer to the free corner than to the rings, turn the hoist around. Not every amazon.co.uk listing in this set shows a shield.
Can you hang a two-eyelet flag flat on a wall?
You can pin the fly end, and you should expect holes. A Woiltryn review says the rings are on one side only, so a flat hang needed drawing pins. Pins tear light polyester. If you need the whole rectangle flat, use a four-corner flag and tie the corners, or hang the two-eyelet flag from a pole where the fly is free.
What is a ball bungee for?
It joins an eyelet to a pole without a sewn rope and toggle. You push the elastic through the eyelet, loop the pole, and seat the cord on the plastic ball. Flag shops sell them separately, at roughly £2.50 to £2.99, and they are not in these flag packs. Two are enough for a two-ring flag. They do not make a 70 g cloth suitable for a gale.
When should you take it down?
Before a gale, and when the cloth is already frayed or badly faded. UK flag guidance says not to fly a flag in a storm and not to fly a worn flag. Reviews of lightweight Spain flags in this set mention fraying, sun fade, and about a month on a pole for one thin cloth. That month figure is one review, not a standard.
Do you need permission in England?
For a plain national flag with no extra advert, GOV.UK’s guide points to the building owner’s permission rather than a planning application for the flag itself. You still need the right to use the pole and the wall. A new tall pole, advertising on the cloth, or a string over a road is a different question, and that is when you ask the owner or the planning authority.
