How to hang a Kurdistan flag

Updated: 20 October 2026

You already have the flag, or you are about to, and the fitting in the packet is two eyelets, four eyelets, a sleeve, or a stick. Hanging it the way a toggle-and-halyard diagram shows will not work if those parts are not on the cloth. This is how to hang a Kurdistan flag with the fixing you actually received, with red at the top. Heinrich W. wrote it from amazon.co.uk listings read on 19 October 2026 and from UK flag-pole guides. We did not fly every flag. Prices stay on the [Kurdistan flag](/hub/flags/kurdistan-flag) comparison. A purchase through a link there can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Which way up

Red goes at the top, white in the middle, green at the bottom, with the sun in the centre of the white band. Green at the top means it is upside down. Hold the hoist on your left and check red is uppermost before you leave the ladder. Most titles do not state the ray count. If you can see the rays, one should point straight up. The Petite Pine friendship flag is a different design, so the three-band rule is not enough. Get the orientation right on the ground. It is harder to see once the flag is above a window.

Two eyelets, four eyelets, or a sleeve

Flagpole Company describes a traditional halyard as a toggle through the top loop and a short line at the bottom, then a cleat. Most of these listings have eyelets or a sleeve, not a toggle. Clip or tie the two hoist eyelets so the hoist is taut, and iron a crease first. The Woiltryn's rings are on the hoist only. Four eyelets, one in each corner, are on the Runesol and the 80 g AZ FLAG. Use the hoist pair on a pole. Loose fly rings knock the staff. The Baseballbat mentions brass grommets and does not say how many, so count them before you buy clips. A sleeve needs a pole you supply. Lower it, slide the sleeve on, then raise it. The UKFlagShop flag is 45 cm x 30 cm, a boat or caravan size, not a 5 ft house flag. If you have not bought yet, size and cloth are on the Kurdistan flag buying guide.

Balcony, wall, and hand flag

On a balcony rail, two hoist eyelets can go to two clips, with red at the top and the fly free. Leave a gap so the cloth does not saw on a rough wall. A short rail wants the smaller AZ FLAG, not a large flag folded in half. A flat wall uses the corners. Four eyelets mean one fixing at each corner. Two eyelets hold only the hoist, so you pin the fly edge, which is what a Woiltryn reviewer ended up doing. Do not stretch the rings until they tear. Wind and rain are on the outdoor Kurdistan flag page. A hand flag is not hung. You hold the Flagtex stick. A UK review called the Petite Pine handle a plastic straw, which will not stand a breeze in a flowerpot.

When to ask before you fly it

Scotland's government guidance puts flag flying outside advertisement control, while a new pole can still need permission. England's Planning Portal allows one garden flagpole up to 4.6 metres, with extra checks in a conservation area and on a listed building. A bracket on a house you already own is a different question from a new tall pole. A shop frontage can fall into advertisement consent even when a house flag does not. Take the flag down in a gale. Flag Consultancy says not to fly in storm or gale conditions. None of these listings states a flame-retardant rating, so do not hang one where a venue has asked for a fire certificate. A tall or coastal pole, or a halyard you have not used, is a job for a flag maker or a pole fitter.

Common questions

Which way up does the flag go?
Red at the top, white in the middle, green at the bottom, sun in the centre. Check that on the ground with the hoist on your left. Green at the top means it is upside down. Titles rarely state the ray count, so use the photo rather than a promise of 21 rays.
How do I use two eyelets on a garden pole?
Clip or tie the top eyelet to the halyard or the top of the bracket, and the bottom eyelet to the lower point, so the hoist is taut. These listings do not include a toggle. Iron a crease first. The Woiltryn's rings will not by themselves hold a flat wall.
What are the other two eyelets for?
They are the fly corners, for a flat hang. On a pole, use the hoist pair and clip the fly rings back, or they knock the staff. That complaint is in the Runesol notes. The 80 g AZ FLAG is the other four-eyelet listing here.
How do I use a sleeve if there is no pole in the box?
You supply the pole. Lower it, slide the sleeve on, then raise it. Feeding the sleeve while the pole is still vertical bunches the cloth. The UKFlagShop flag is a boat or caravan size, not a 5 ft house flag.
Can I hang it flat on a wall?
Yes, if you support the corners and keep red at the top. Four eyelets are the simple version. Two eyelets hold only the hoist, so the fly edge needs its own pins. Keep the fly off rough brick. A 150 cm flag needs more wall than a 90 cm x 60 cm one.
Will a cheap flag fit a halyard and toggle?
Only if you add the link yourself. Flagpole Company's method assumes a toggle and a short line on the flag. Eyelet flags here need clips or a rope through the holes. A sleeve does not take a toggle. Do not force one through a brass eyelet.
