How to apply tile adhesive

Updated: October 2026

You are about to open a ready-mixed tub, or tip a 20 kg sack into a bucket, on a domestic wall. How to apply tile adhesive is the order from there: check the wall and the pack, spread only what stays open, bed the tile as the maker asks, then wait before grout or water. The seven amazon.co.uk listings sit on the [tile adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/tile-adhesive). This page does not rank those packs. Follow the open time and the bed on the tub you have, and stop where a tiler should take over.

Prepare the wall and the pack

Gypsum plaster needs four weeks, not just a hard feel under the hand. BAL, citing BS 5385, pairs that wait with a usual guide of 20 kg per square metre for adhesive, tile and grout together. Unskimmed plasterboard is 32 kg per square metre on Instarmac's chart. Prime only when that adhesive's own sheet tells you to. An ARDEX note, also citing BS 5385, puts concrete at six weeks, a sand-and-cement screed at three, and a traditional render at two. Tile only when the adhesive maker agrees with that background. Keep powder dry and frost-free, and keep a ready-mixed tub from freezing. Several sheets limit application to about +5°C to +35°C.

Spread only what stays open

Spread about 1 m², then bed those tiles before the next comb. Much more than that lets the ribs skin over. The only numbered open time here is up to 20 minutes on the EVO-STIK 5 litre tub. Everbuild gives no duration for its extended open time, so those 20 minutes stay on the EVO-STIK pack. One reviewer's 0.8 m² is not a rated yield, and no notch depth in millimetres is given for these packs. Use the trowel the sheet names. Stop if you would need a deeper bed than the adhesive allows.

Solid bed where the maker asks

Showers, floors and outside work take a solid bed, which is the Tile Association line, and a notched comb there leaves channels. Sika's claims for EVERBUILD 703 belong to that product: a solid bed, no notch in wet areas, at least 75 percent cover, and seven days before showers or baths. A solid bed is not tanking. Waterproofing before any adhesive is on tile adhesive for bathroom walls. A dry splashback can stay notched when that pack says so. For the 75 percent check, lift one tile from the first row while the adhesive is open, and comb again if the back is mostly bare.

Wait, then grout

Cure times are not shared across these packs. A 2-in-1 paste is a poor fine mosaic grout. Reviewers of Everbuild and the EVO-STIK pastes often find them too runny, or prone to shrink and leave pinholes, in a fine joint. Grout has its own standard, BS EN 13888. Grout only when the adhesive sheet says you may, and keep water off a pack still short of its own line. A thicker bed will not fix the wrong chemistry.

When to stop

Call a tiler for a wet room or a power shower on plaster, and for a damp or hollow wall. Underfloor heating, a moving floor, and a bed deeper than the adhesive allows are the same stop. Stop for a hidden leak, a boiler cupboard, or a wall that may contain asbestos. Nothing here identifies asbestos. On a sound wall, spread a small area, use the bed the maker prints, and keep that sheet's wait.

Common questions

How much adhesive should I spread at once?
Spread about 1 m², then bed it before the next comb. More than that lets the ribs skin over, and the tile later lifts with the comb still sharp. Only the EVO-STIK 5 litre tub prints a number, up to 20 minutes. Everbuild's extended open time has no duration, so leave those 20 minutes on that pack.
When does a solid bed replace a notched comb?
Use a solid bed in showers, on floors and outside, and wherever the sheet bars a notch. That follows the Tile Association. Everbuild 703, on Sika's claim, also wants at least 75 percent cover and seven days before a shower. A dry splashback can stay notched. The solid bed is not tanking.
How long do I wait before grout, and before water?
These packs do not share one cure. EVO-STIK's 5 litre field is 24 hours, and UniBond lists 24 hours for the grout. Bond It waits for light foot traffic and prints no hour. Seven days before water is Sika's Everbuild 703 claim, not a time for the other tubs and not a substitute for tanking.
How do I mix the 20 kg Bond It sack?
Mix 20 kg of Bond It powder to 5 litres of clean water, and keep that ratio if the first stir feels stiff. Grout only after light foot traffic. No hour is printed. Store spare powder dry and frost-free, and stay within about +5°C to +35°C where the sheet uses that band.
Can I add water if the paste has separated in the tub?
Leave separated ready-mixed paste unthinned. Extra water is not part of the filled mix, and it will not restore the paste. A lid that arrived split is a return under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If the paste stays uneven, keep it off the wall.
When should I stop and call a tiler?
Call a tiler for a wet room, a power shower on plaster, or a damp or hollow wall. The same stop covers underfloor heating, a moving floor, a bed deeper than the sheet allows, stone that stains, and porcelain larger than the sheet allows. Also stop for a leak, a boiler cupboard, or possible asbestos, which this page cannot identify.
