Tile adhesive for bathroom walls

Updated: October 2026

You are tiling the plasterboard walls of a standard shower enclosure, and the last wall you tiled was the splashback behind the basin. In a British bathroom a waterproof tub looks like one purchase for both. Running water changes the job. You need a tile adhesive for bathroom walls that the listing allows in a shower, laid as a solid bed, plus a tanking decision. This page stays on that enclosure. Our [tile adhesive comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/tile-adhesive) uses seven amazon.co.uk listings, The Tile Association and Sika, and no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

A shower wall is not a splashback

A basin splashback takes steam, a splash from the tap, and a wipe. Your enclosure wall takes the shower stream, and that water looks for a joint, a corner or a pipe. On plasterboard, water that passes the grout meets paper and gypsum. The Tile Association asks for a solid bed in showers. Open ridges, often fine on a dry splashback, become channels once the shower runs. The tubs that say shower or showerproof are a shorter list than the seven.

Which tubs name a shower

Four listings use shower or showerproof. Everbuild 703, about £6.24 for 750 g, is a fix-and-grout paste for power-shower bathroom walls, wall use only. Coverage is about 0.5 m², depending on tile size. Anti-mould does not tank the board, and the listing prints no seven-day wait. The EVO-STIK 1 litre, about £11.29, names kitchens, bathrooms and showers, with no class and no open time. The 5 litre, about £24.41, names domestic shower walls, and the size lines clash at 5 litres, 9 litres and 99.8 g. Instant Grab, about £25.56, is showerproof and adhesive only, and a 10 litre line clashes with a 100 g weight. UniBond's tube does not name a shower. Bond It CTA Flexible is C2 T E S2 cement for floors and walls, and LAMXIN is a craft gel, not a bathroom-wall adhesive.

Solid bed and tanking

Tanking protects plaster or plasterboard, and you choose it apart from the tub. A solid bed means the adhesive meets the tile without grooves for water. Sika's page for EVERBUILD 703 adds no notch in wet areas, at least 75 percent cover, and seven days before showers or baths. Those seven days stay on that Sika claim. The amazon.co.uk listing names the power-shower wall and omits the wait, and the EVO-STIK 24-hour cure belongs to the other tub.

Where a ready-mixed paste stops

None of these ready-mixed amazon.co.uk files prints a D code. Tile It Right tells you to look for D2 on a domestic shower wall, on the pack or the data sheet. These listings leave the class unknown. A dispersion paste hardens by losing water, so at least one face has to be porous. Sika names porcelain wall tiles for Everbuild 703, so follow that tub if you bought it. This page leaves floors alone. Paste versus powder is the ready-mixed versus powder tile adhesive page.

When to call a tiler

A hollow tap on this plasterboard is a stop, because paste will not dry a wet board. Compared with a tray and a tiled wall, a wet room needs falls, a drain and a membrane. This enclosure still needs a solid bed, a tanking decision, and a tub that names a shower.

Common questions

Does showerproof tile adhesive replace tanking?
Showerproof, waterproof and anti-mould describe the paste in the tub. On plaster or plasterboard, impervious adhesive and grout do not replace tanking. Water can pass a joint or a pipe and reach the board. Choose the tanking system for that background, then tile the face it allows. If the need for a tank is unclear, ask a tiler first.
Do I lay a solid bed or comb the adhesive in a shower?
Lay a solid bed, so the adhesive meets the tile without open grooves. The Tile Association asks for that in showers. Sika's method for EVERBUILD 703 adds no notch in wet areas, at least 75 percent cover, and seven days before showers or baths. Those conditions belong to that Sika page. Peel a tile and re-bed it if the cover is patchy.
Can I tile plasterboard in a shower with ready-mixed adhesive?
You can when the board is sound and dry, the listing names that use, and you still decide on tanking. Everbuild 703 names plasterboard and power-shower walls, for wall use only. Dispersion needs a porous face so the water can leave. These listings do not print the D2 code Tile It Right says to look for. A damp or hollow board is a tiler's job.
How long does Everbuild say to wait before using the shower?
Sika's page for EVERBUILD 703 says seven days before showers or baths, with a solid bed and at least 75 percent cover. The amazon.co.uk listing does not print that wait, so the seven days stay on Sika's claim. They do not transfer to the EVO-STIK tubs or to Instant Grab. The 24-hour field on the EVO-STIK 5 litre is that product's full-cure line.
When is a bathroom wall a job for a tiler?
Call a tiler for a wet room, a power shower on plaster, or a wall that is already damp or hollow. A wet room needs falls, a drain and a membrane. Paste will not dry a wet board. BAL's note, citing BS 5385, puts four weeks as the minimum before tiling gypsum plaster. A sound, dry plasterboard enclosure, with tanking decided, is the narrower job.
