Polystyrene glue buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You searched for polystyrene glue because a foam joint failed, a kit part will not seat, or a felt trim will not stay. amazon.co.uk puts a foam contact tube, a kit cement and a tacky gel on the same page. This buying guide is the fork before you pay. Prices and star counts live on the [polystyrene glue comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/polystyrene-glue). Figures are the 19 October 2026 listings. Peter F. checked maker sheets, not a lab bond. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Name the material first

Start with what is in your hand, not the brand on the tube. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) are closed-cell foams for packaging, scenery and some insulation boards. Hard kit styrene is dense injection-moulded plastic. EVA, sponge and pearl cotton are soft craft foams. EPP is a polypropylene foam on some RC airframes, and it sits on POR's exclusion list. A scrap of the same sheet beats a star line. If solvent cement softens or collapses the scrap, that bottle is wrong. Felt on craft foam is not the kit-cement lane. If the only fork left is foam adhesive or kit cement, use polystyrene foam glue vs plastic cement.

Match chemistry to that material

UHU POR is a foam contact adhesive for expanded polystyrene and similar hard foams: a styrene-butadiene rubber in an aliphatic solvent chosen not to attack the foam, on both faces, joined when tacky. It is still solvent-based and highly flammable. Solvent-free is not foam-safe. Revell Contacta Professional is a solvent weld for hard kit plastic. It fuses styrene faces and ruins white foam cells. Aleene's Felt and Foam is a high-viscosity gel for felt and porous foam. Board adhesives for EPS and XPS walls are a different class and are not in this amazon set. 3M UK notes that dispersion adhesives can bond rigid polystyrene foam, while ordinary solvent all-purpose adhesives dissolve it. Superglue and hot-melt usually collapse EPS.

Method, water and temperature next

POR goes on both faces. Wait until a finger test shows firm adhesion, often five to twenty minutes on the maker sheet, then press. Final strength is around seventy-two hours. The 50 ml listing prints twenty minutes; the twin pack prints twenty-four hours. Do not average those clocks. The sheet also states good water resistance, about -30°C to +70°C in service, and +5°C as the floor for application. Aleene's maker page says about an hour before handling, water resistant rather than waterproof, and not washable. A 120 ml bottle with five or six ratings still needs a scrap test.

Price and reviews only after fit

Entry in this set is about £6.50 to £7: Contacta at £6.47 for 25 ml, UHU por at £6.75 for 50 ml. Mid is about £12 to £13: the POR twin pack at £11.82, Aleene's at £12.99, and two 120 ml foam bottles at £12.99. A 4.8 from five reviews does not outweigh 4.6 from 847 on a documented foam adhesive. Contacta's 4.5 from 13,778 reviews proves a popular kit cement, not a foam winner. Match the chemistry first, then read the UK notes for mess, clogging and failed grab.

When to stop and get another product class

A 50 ml craft tube is the wrong class for insulation boards on a wall or roof. Solvent-free polyurethane board adhesives exist for that duty and sit outside this comparison. Unmodified polystyrene ceiling tiles sit under Approved Document B. A parliamentary answer from June 2017 said they do not comply with Part B for new buildings, and the adhesive does not change that. GB CLP pictograms on a flammable tube are there for a reason. Northern Ireland uses EU CLP. If a workplace uses solvent adhesive for more than about thirty minutes a day, HSE guidance still points to ventilation and, where needed, local exhaust. Get advice beyond a craft tube if someone has swallowed the product or feels dizzy from the vapour.

Common questions

Is polystyrene cement safe on Styrofoam?
No. Polystyrene cement is a solvent weld for hard kit styrene. On expanded polystyrene foam it softens and collapses the cells. Use a foam contact adhesive such as POR, or another chemistry the maker states is safe on that foam, not a kit needle bottle.
What glue bonds expanded polystyrene without melting it?
In this set the documented foam contact adhesive is UHU POR, sold as a single 50 ml tube and as a twin pack. Water-based tacky gels can work on porous craft faces, though they are a different method. Scrap-test any lightly reviewed bottle before you trust a large panel.
Does UHU POR work on polypropylene foam (EPP)?
The twin-pack listing excludes PP, PE, PET, PTFE, POM and SI. EPP is a polypropylene foam, so that exclusion still stands even though the part looks like foam. Scrap-test only if a builder datasheet for your exact sheet says otherwise.
When should I use PVA or PU instead of a craft tube?
Use a board-class polyurethane or a maker-stated dispersion system when you are fixing EPS or XPS insulation to a wall or roof. A craft contact tube is for models, scenery and small foam joints, not for structural board work.
How do I read waterproof on a glue listing?
Treat it as the listing's claim for the cured film, not as a roofing certificate. POR's sheet says good water resistance; Aleene's says water resistant and not washable. Outdoor, submerged or washable use needs the maker's own limit, not the search title.
What does GB CLP on the tube mean for home use?
It is the UK classification and labelling rule that puts the hazard pictograms on the pack. Ventilate, keep flames away from flammable solvents, and follow the pack phrases. It is not a DIY exemption from workplace COSHH if you use the adhesive at work.
