How to use a caulking gun

Updated: 23 October 2026

The bead along a bath or a window fails more often from a flooded nozzle and a rod left under pressure than from the brand on the frame. How to use a caulking gun, in a UK kitchen or bathroom, is a short sequence: match the cartridge, cut the nozzle, puncture the inner seal, run the bead, then release the rod. The steps below are the usual manual-gun method, checked against our [cartridge press comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/cartridge-press) so the tool you load accepts the tube. We did not time a cure. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you start

Read the cartridge, not just the gun. A standard UK silicone tube is 310 ml. A 600 ml foil sausage needs a barrel listed for that pack, and a side-by-side epoxy needs a dual gun. If the sizes disagree, use the buying guide before you cut anything. The 310 ml versus 600 ml page is the format check. For a short domestic bead, an open window and the gloves on the safety data sheet are the usual controls. HSE sheet SR22 is a workshop note for solvent adhesives, not a rule that bath silicone needs extraction. If the joint is a structural anchor, an injected damp course or a fire stop, use the applicator the manufacturer specifies.

Load the cartridge

Press the release plate and pull the rod fully back. Seat the cartridge nozzle-forward, base on the plunger, with no rocking. If the plunger face is wider than the tube, stop. That is what reviewers said about the 600 ml GOTOTOP plunger, and those comments are not marked as UK-verified. Cut the nozzle at about 45°, near the tip, close to the joint width. You can cut again. You cannot uncut a nozzle. Pierce the inner foil seal through the cut tip. Skip that and the trigger crushes the cartridge. Take up the slack until the plunger touches, and squirt the first centimetre onto cardboard.

Run a neat bead

Pull the gun towards you with the angled nozzle in the joint, in a steady rhythm. Too fast and the bead breaks. Too slow and it piles up. Tool a bath bead while it is workable, then peel the masking tape before a skin forms. The open time is on the cartridge. We will not invent one. A rotating barrel helps in corners, which is the 360° claim on the YATO gun. Keep the nozzle buried so air does not run along the back of the bead. On a vertical joint, work in one pass. If acrylic is too stiff, a bowl of warm water is a common DIY step. Check the sheet. Do not bake a solvent cartridge on a radiator.

Release pressure and store

As soon as the bead is finished, hit the release so the rod jumps back and the ooze stops. A shut-off claim, as on the YATO listing, does not remove that step. A drip-free line on the generic £15.11 listing is not a substitute if no catch is described. Cap the nozzle if you will use the tube tomorrow, and wipe the rod before sealant hardens. For many silicones, a dry cloth is the clean while the product is wet. Call a professional for injection damp-proofing, structural epoxy anchoring, or any cartridge that names a trained applicator. A bath bead you can cut out. A resin anchor you cannot prove is a different job.

Common questions

How do I load a 310 ml cartridge?
Press the release and pull the rod all the way back. Seat the 310 ml tube with the nozzle forward and the base on the plunger, with no rocking. Cut the nozzle, pierce the inner seal, and take up the slack until the plunger touches. Squirt the first centimetre onto scrap so air is gone before you touch the joint. If the tube will not sit, the gun is the wrong capacity. Check that before you cut the nozzle short.
How do I cut the nozzle?
Cut at about 45°, at a diameter close to the joint width, using a sharp blade and keeping your other hand out of the line. Start nearer the tip than you think. A bath joint that is 6 mm wide does not need the nozzle opened at the shoulder. You can trim a second time after a short test bead on cardboard. An oversized cut is the usual reason a bead looks amateur even when the gun is fine.
How do I stop oozing after I stop?
Release the rod catch as soon as the bead is finished so the plunger springs back and pressure in the cartridge drops. Then cap the nozzle. Leaving the gun cocked is what produces the trail on the tile. A shut-off claim on a closed-barrel gun does not remove that step. Wipe the tip before the sealant skins, or the next start will push a cured plug into the joint.
Do I need to puncture the inner seal?
Yes. The plastic nozzle is only the outer cut. Inside it, a foil or membrane stops the sealant leaving the cartridge in the shop. Pierce that membrane through the cut nozzle until you feel it break. If you skip it, the trigger compresses the tube and little or nothing comes out. Do the pierce over scrap, because the first product out is often a short spit of air and sealant.
When should I stop and call someone?
Stop if the cartridge is a structural anchor resin, an injected damp-proof course, or a fire-stopping product that names a trained applicator. Also stop if the twin pack is a 2K system and you do not have the matching dual gun and mixer. A wobbly bathroom bead you can cut out and redo. A resin fixing you cannot prove is a different risk, and this how-to does not make it a DIY afternoon.
