Adhesive nails vs Command strips

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have two packets that both claim to hold a picture and both come off by stretching, and you need to know which wall each one is actually for. Adhesive nails vs Command strips is a surface decision first. tesa sells a wallpaper-and-plaster nail at 1 kg. 3M tells you not to use Command on paper wallpaper. The kilogram on the Command packet does not cancel that warning. Our [adhesive nail comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/adhesive-nail) ranks three tesa listings only. It does not add a Command product. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

The surface rule

On paper wallpaper, follow tesa’s wallpaper nail and 3M’s warning against Command. 3M UK says not to use Command on wallpapers, vinyl, or delicate surfaces, and that the adhesive is only as strong as the wallpaper’s bond to the wall. tesa’s 1 kg page is the one that names wallpaper and plaster. On sound, smooth painted plaster, Command is inside the surfaces 3M lists, and a tesa wallpaper nail can also be used if you stay inside 1 kg and the paint is sound. You do have to leave Command if the wall is paper. Vinyl is excluded by tesa’s refill page as well. Paper eligibility is on adhesive nails for wallpaper.

Weight and what the numbers do not mean

These tesa nails are 1 kg per nail. The £3.40 and £4.16 packs also say 2 kg with two. The four-pack does not repeat that 2 kg line, and it says the hold depends on the substrate. Command’s Universal Sticky Nail is published at up to 3.6 kg, for a picture about 45 cm by 60 cm, only on surfaces Command allows. That is not paper wallpaper. A 2.5 kg frame on smooth sound paint is outside the two-nail tesa line here and may fit a Command pack that states that load. On paper, neither figure covers it. Weigh the frame before the larger number chooses the brand.

Removal and the limits both share

Both come off by stretching a tab slowly, in the direction the leaflet shows. For the tesa nail that is straight down, parallel to the wall, without pressing the peg into the finish. Neither gesture repairs a weak finish. United Kingdom reviews on the tesa listings include torn wallpaper, a chunk of paint, and nails that fell under a light load. 3M says not to hang over beds or valuables. These tesa nails are not a fixing over a bed either. Command’s indoor band is about +10 °C to +40 °C. A 0.5 kg tesa family sheet states 5 °C to 35 °C, as family guidance rather than a lab result for these listings. The tesa sheets say five seconds, not Command’s one-hour press.

Which to buy

On sound paper wallpaper that is not vinyl, buy a wallpaper-and-plaster nail and stay inside 1 kg, or 2 kg with two where that line is printed. The £3.40 pack is the adjustable two-pack. The £5.64 pack is the adjustable four-pack. Test a hidden patch first. On sound smooth paint, Command is the product 3M describes, within that pack’s rating, not over a bed, and not on paper. A tesa 1 kg nail can stay on that paint if the frame is light enough. If the finish is weak, buy neither. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires the goods to be as described. It does not insure the wallpaper. No Command listing is ranked on the adhesive-nail page.

Common questions

Can I use Command strips on wallpaper?
3M UK says not to use Command on wallpapers, vinyl, or delicate surfaces. Paper wallpaper is the case the tesa wallpaper-and-plaster nail is sold for, and only when that paper is sound. A higher Command kilogram rating does not lift the wallpaper ban. If your paper is vinyl, tesa’s wallpaper strip is excluded as well. You then need a different fixing, not a swap between these two.
Are adhesive nails stronger than Command strips?
No. They are rated for different surfaces. The tesa nails here are 1 kg per nail, and two of the listings say 2 kg with two nails. A Command sticky nail is published at up to 3.6 kg on surfaces Command allows, which do not include paper wallpaper. The larger number is not a strength win on paper. On smooth paint, compare the pack rating with the weight of your frame.
Which should I use on painted plaster?
Either, if the paint is sound and you respect the rating. Command is in its stated range on smooth painted walls. A tesa wallpaper-and-plaster nail can also be used within 1 kg. Fresh or flaking paint is a reason to use neither. Command’s seven-day wait after painting is 3M’s rule. Do not treat it as a printed tesa step, and do not hang over a bed with either.
Do both come off by stretching?
Yes. You stretch a tab rather than prising the hook off. For the tesa nail, pull slowly straight down, parallel to the wall, and stop if the paper lifts. Command has its own direction on its leaflet. Stretching does not make a weak finish safe. United Kingdom reviews on the tesa listings include torn wallpaper and lifted paint even though the packet says removable without a trace.
Can I hang a frame over a bed with either?
No. 3M says not to use Command over beds or for valuables. A tesa adhesive nail is not a fixing for anything over a bed either. A frame that falls, even a light one, is a poor risk above a pillow. Use a proper wall fixing if the picture has to live there, and keep both of these systems for a wall that is not over the bed.
