Adhesive nails buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

A light frame, a papered wall, and no permission to drill: an adhesive nails buying guide matches the nail to that wall, then to the weight, then to the head, before a pack price means anything. The three listings in our [adhesive nail comparison](/hub/fillers-adhesives-and-sprays/adhesive-nail) are tesa 1 kg wallpaper-and-plaster nails on amazon.co.uk, noted on 19 October 2026, from about £3.40 to about £5.64. All three show 4.4 stars. That rating does not say whether the paper is vinyl, whether the head moves, or whether 1 kg is enough. Match the nail to the wall

Buy the surface family before you buy a kilogram rating. These nails are for textured, sensitive wallpaper or plaster. The refill page for the 1 kg wallpaper strip says not to use it on vinyl wallpaper or on non-stick coatings such as silicone. Ordinary detergent is the wrong cleaner. That page names silicone-free window cleaner, methylated spirit, or isopropanol. Flaking paint, loose paste, and soft paint are reasons to stop. Press one strip where a frame will hide it. If the paper or the paint comes away, stop. The paper test is on adhesive nails for wallpaper.

Read the kilogram rating

tesa publishes 1 kg for one nail and 2 kg with two on the two-nail listings. Weigh the frame. Glass and a wide moulding can cross 1 kg. The four-pack states 1 kg per nail and says the holding force depends on the substrate. Do not paste the two-nail 2 kg line onto that listing. A 2 kg wallpaper nail, published at 4 kg with two, is sold in the UK and is not one of these three listings. A shelf, a large mirror, a television, or anything over a bed is not an adhesive-nail job.

Fixed head or adjustable head

Model 77773 is the fixed nail. Model 77774 is height adjustable, with a red toggle so you can nudge the frame level. The £4.16 two-pack is 77773 and does not state an adjuster. The four-pack and the £3.40 two-pack are 77774. The cheaper title omits the word adjustable, and the bullets say height adjustable for straight alignment. On these shelf prices the fixed pack costs more, about £4.16 against about £3.40. A technical row on the fixed pack says metal and plaster while the title says wallpaper or plaster.

Pack size and refills

Two nails cover one pair, or two very light frames. The £5.64 listing is four adjustable nails, about £1.41 each if you use all four. Two of the £3.40 packs would be £6.80 for four nails, more than the four-pack. The plastic peg is reusable only with a new strip. The first pack already includes the strips. If the paper failed the hidden test, or the frame is over 2 kg, leave all three listings. Who each pack is for sits on best adhesive nails.

Common questions

Is 1 kg per nail enough for a typical photo frame?
Often, for a small light frame, and only after you weigh it. The 1 kg family is 1 kg for one nail and, on the two two-nail listings, 2 kg with two. If the scales show more than 2 kg, this set is the wrong rating. The four-pack also says the hold depends on the wall.
When do I need the adjustable head instead of the fixed 77773 nail?
Choose the adjustable 77774 head when the frame must sit level, especially with two nails on one cord. That is the four-pack, and the £3.40 two-pack on its bullets even though the title omits the word. The £4.16 pack is 77773 and does not state an adjuster. A single small frame can live with a fixed head.
Does two nails mean 2 kg on the 1 kg family?
On the £3.40 and £4.16 listings, yes: up to 1 kg per nail or 2 kg using two nails. Do not copy that sentence onto the four-pack, which states 1 kg per nail and that the hold depends on the substrate. Two nails are not a licence to overlap the strips. One United Kingdom reviewer allowed about 8 mm. That spacing is the reviewer’s, not a tesa specification.
Can I use the wallpaper nail on vinyl wallpaper?
No. tesa’s refill page for the 1 kg wallpaper strip says not to use it on vinyl wallpaper or on non-stick coatings. The foam core is for textured, sensitive paper and plaster, not for a vinyl face. A higher star rating does not change that exclusion. If your paper is vinyl, stop. These three listings do not name a vinyl-suitable surface.
Should I buy the four-pack or two separate two-packs?
Buy the four-pack at about £5.64 when you will use four adjustable nails. Buy one £3.40 two-pack when one or two nails finish the job. Two of those two-packs would be £6.80, more than the four-pack on these shelf prices. The £4.16 two-pack does not state an adjuster, so it is a weak way to stock up.
Do I need refill strips on the first purchase?
Not for the first hang. Each nail arrives with its strip. You need a new wallpaper-and-plaster strip only when you reuse the plastic peg. The refill follows the same rules: no ordinary detergent, no vinyl, and no non-stick coating. A 2 kg wallpaper nail, rated 4 kg with two, is a real UK product and it is not one of these three listings.
