Rhododendron fertiliser buying guide before you buy

Updated: October 2026

Before you add a rhododendron fertiliser to the basket, look at the plant, the soil and the job you expect the product to do. An established shrub growing well in acid soil may need no extra feed, while a container has only a small store of nutrients. Yellow leaves can point to unsuitable pH or damaged roots rather than an empty stomach. The [rhododendron fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/rhododendron-fertiliser) holds the ten amazon.co.uk listings and prices from 21 October 2026. When you may not need a bag

The RHS recommends acidic conditions for rhododendrons, broadly around pH 5.0 to 6.0, and warns that overfeeding can burn roots and leaves. A mature shrub flowering normally in suitable soil does not automatically benefit from a high-nitrogen spring dose. Healthy growth, with no diagnosed deficiency, can mean leaving it alone. A container loses nutrients as you water, and feed cannot rebuild compost that has collapsed. On chalk, a pot or a deep raised bed is more reliable than changing a whole garden. If young leaves are yellow between green veins, use the rhododendron yellow leaves guide before you assume a general feed is the answer.

Read the nutrient declaration, not the biggest number

On a fertiliser declaration, N is nitrogen, P₂O₅ is phosphate and K₂O is potash. The figures are proportions, not a score. A higher first number is not proof that a feed is better. Miracle-Gro continuous-release model 121065 declares 20-7-16. Vitax azalea, rhododendron and shrub feed is listed at 9:7.5:10.2 with 1% iron. The Miracle-Gro 121180 liquid brand page gives 7-3-5. You cannot compare strength without the dose, or copy one product's grammes onto another. For named conditional picks, see the best rhododendron fertiliser guide.

Choose granules or liquid by the routine

Continuous-release granules suit one careful spring application. The Miracle-Gro 900 g listing was about £8.10 and claims one application for the season. Another handful because growth looks slow defeats that plan and raises burn risk. Liquid suits pots if you will measure through the growing season. Westland's published direction is 50 ml in 4.5 litres every one to two weeks. Stop when the plant is not actively growing. Vitax pouches use spring and again around flowering, not the one-dose calendar. The granules or liquid comparison sets those habits side by side.

Five listings that are easy to misread

The about £15.25 Miracle-Gro listing is not two packs of rhododendron feed. It bundles the relevant granules with a separate rose and shrub product. Buy it only if you need both and can keep the instructions apart. The granule-and-liquid bundle has 5.0 from six ratings and incomplete pack fields, so do not apply both at full rate. The 121180 twin pack has a much larger sample, yet the bullets mention vegetables. Check the bottle. Thuja-Vital is for woody evergreens. Sulphate of iron sits under moss control and is not a complete NPK feed. Vitax titles say two 0.9 kg pouches while weight fields show 998 g or 900 g. Check the live listing before a price-per-kilogram sum.

What to check before ordering

Start with the task: routine spring feeding, repeat container feeding, or a diagnosed iron issue. Then read NPK, rate, season, pack amount and the safety lines. Model 121065 carries a serious eye-damage warning and says to keep it away from children and pets. Samples here run from two ratings to 1,315, so five stars can be weaker evidence than 4.6 from hundreds. Two litres at about £14 may suit several pots. An about £8.10 granule may cost less for one annual shrub. Follow the pack you receive.

Common questions

Do rhododendrons always need fertiliser?
No. An established plant growing well in suitable acid soil may need little or no extra feeding. Containers, poor growth and confirmed nutrient shortages create stronger cases. Before feeding, check soil pH, moisture, drainage and whether the compost needs renewal.
Is a higher nitrogen number better?
Not automatically. A 20-7-16 controlled-release feed and a 9:7.5:10.2 granular feed use different formulations and application rates. More nitrogen can mean excessive soft growth or damage if overapplied. Compare the complete declaration and dose for the plant, not one number.
Can I use rose food on a rhododendron?
Do not assume so. The bundle includes separate rhododendron and rose-and-shrub products because they are different feeds. Use the component labelled for rhododendrons, azaleas or ericaceous plants and keep each product to its own directions.
Is sulphate of iron a complete rhododendron feed?
No. Sulphate of iron supplies iron and can affect soil acidity, but it is not a balanced NPK fertiliser. It may suit a specific diagnosed job. Persistent chlorosis in chalky soil often needs a container or raised-bed solution rather than repeated iron alone.
Do fertiliser regulations prove quality?
No. UK fertiliser marketing rules govern matters such as composition and labelling. Compliance is not a quality medal or proof that one formulation outperforms another. The declaration tells you what is present. Plant condition and correct application decide whether it is appropriate.
What is the safest way to compare pack value?
Confirm the delivered quantity, required dose and number of applications first. Conflicting pack fields make a simple price-per-kilogram calculation unreliable. Compare only like-for-like jobs, such as two repeat-feed liquids or two granular products, and recheck the current amazon.co.uk price.
