Peat-free potting compost UK: what the bag must say

Updated: October 2026

You want a bag that does not contain peat, and the search results still argue about a ban that was supposed to arrive in 2024. Peat-free potting compost UK shoppers can actually buy is a label question first and a statute question second. Only the words peat-free count. This page is the rules and the watering change for the bags in the [potting soil comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/potting-soil). It is not a ranking. The Products Compared editorial team used RHS peat pages, the Responsible Sourcing Scheme, and the amazon.co.uk listings. We did not test growth. Is peat compost banned in 2026?

No. England announced a retail ban on horticultural peat for 2024. By October 2026 that proposal had not become law. The RHS said in 2026 that no legislation was in place. The Guardian, on 15 July 2026, reported the same stall: action when parliamentary time allows. The announcement was an England-only retail proposal, not a UK-wide statute. RHS shops have their own no-new-peat policy, including no new peat plants from January 2026. That is a retailer rule, not a government ban. If avoiding peat matters, you still read the bag. How to choose before that line is the potting soil buying guide.

How to read peat-free, organic and RSS

If the bag does not say peat-free, the RHS says it most likely is not. Organic, eco-friendly and a reduction in peat use are different sentences. A green leaf on the photo is not a certificate. Munnie says the mix enables a reduction in the use of peat, next to organic materials and an eco-friendly bag with no certifier. Laeto calls itself an organic planting mix. DIVCHI uses organic wording. Growmoor and both Miracle-Gro faces have no peat-free line. One Laeto review is not the label. The Responsible Sourcing Scheme grades A to E. That logo is a sourcing mark, not a growth test. PAS 100:2018 is a BSI specification for composted materials, not a medal for a houseplant bag. If the listing does not print RSS or PAS 100, do not infer either.

Which bags here print peat-free

Houseplant Focus prints peat-free on the title, the item type and the bullets: two 8 litre bags at about £17.98, about £1.12 a litre, 4.6 from 1,739 reviews. The listed weight of 1.2 kg does not match 16 litres. Some reviewers add perlite or orchid bark. That does not change the peat-free line. PLANT!T's coir brick says peat-free with nothing added, about £9.86, 4.3 from 508 reviews, expanding to a claimed 15 litres after 6 to 8 litres of water. You supply the feed. It is a substrate, not a complete potting compost. The other seven faces do not print peat-free. Growmoor 60 litres at about £13.98, the twin at about £21.71, both Miracle-Gro packs, DIVCHI at about £7.70 and Laeto at about £24.99 are silent. Munnie at about £9.34 prints a reduction. This set has no peat-free 60 litre patio sack.

Watering and feeding after you switch

Peat-free mixes often look dry on top. The RHS says you water them differently, not necessarily more. Finger a third of the way down, or lift the pot. If a pot has dried into a cake, soak it and drain it. Gardeners' World and Garden Organic say the same. The 5 cm rim and the rest of the method are on how to use potting compost. Which? treats about four weeks as the usual starter window unless the bag claims longer. Houseplant Focus does not print Miracle-Gro's three-month feed. PLANT!T needs feed from the first potting. Buy a crumbly, unfaded sack and use it within about three months. A sourcing logo does not tell you how wet the bag is.

Common questions

Is peat compost illegal to sell in the UK?
No. England announced a 2024 retail ban that had not become law by 2026. The RHS said no legislation was in place. A peat bag can still be sold on amazon.co.uk. RHS shops running a no-new-peat policy are following their own rule, not a statute.
How do I know a bag is peat-free?
Read the words peat-free on the title or the bag. The RHS says that if those words are missing, the bag most likely is not peat-free. Organic, eco-friendly, and a reduction in peat use do not replace them. A review that says peat-free is not the label.
Does organic mean peat-free?
No. Organic wording on Laeto and DIVCHI names no certifier and does not print peat-free. Munnie's organic-materials line sits next to a peat-reduction bullet, which is still not peat-free. Certification, if you need it, is a named mark, not a mood word.
What is the RSS logo?
The Responsible Sourcing Scheme grades A to E for ingredient sourcing. It is not a growth trial and not a potting-mix award. If the listing does not show the logo, do not invent a grade. Absence of RSS also does not prove the bag contains peat.
Which bags in this comparison say peat-free?
Houseplant Focus prints it on the title and bullets. PLANT!T's listing says peat-free with nothing added. The other seven listings do not. Munnie's reduction line does not count. A Laeto review does not count.
Do I water peat-free compost differently?
Yes, by feel rather than by the dry-looking surface. The RHS says differently, not necessarily more. Finger a third of the way down, or weigh the pot.
What is PAS 100?
PAS 100:2018 is a BSI specification for composted materials used as ingredients or soil improvers. It is not a medal for a houseplant bag and not proof that a mix is peat-free. A listing that never mentions it is not failing a test this site ran.
