Lawn sand vs sharp sand: grams or kilograms

Updated: October 2026

You searched lawn sand because the lawn sits wet after rain, and the first amazon.co.uk row is a ferrous-sulphate granule. Lawn sand vs sharp sand is the material split, not a winner's badge. Chemical lawn sand is a carrier at grams. Horticultural sharp sand is washed, gritty garden sand at kilograms after you spike. Builders' sand is not the Royal Horticultural Society mix. The [lawn sand comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/lawn-sand) holds this capture's five ASINs. This page keeps the two rates on separate jobs.

Two materials share one name

Chemical lawn sand is a granule for moss and a light green-up: sand carrying ferrous sulphate and a little nitrogen. Westland and both Vitax Green Up packs in this capture sit on that side. You spread them at about 80 g per square metre on an established lawn. They are not a dressing you brush into spike holes by the kilogram. Horticultural sharp sand is washed, angular garden sand. The RHS uses it after aeration, often as about 3 parts sandy loam, 6 parts sharp sand and 1 part compost, at about 2-3 kg per square metre. You are changing how water moves, not blackening moss this week. Scottish Aggregates prints 0/4 mm sand and a lute or stiff brush, alone or mixed with loam. The lawn sand buying guide is the job-first order.

Read the rate before you open a 20 kg bag

Eighty grams per square metre is a thin scatter. On a 10 m by 10 m lawn that is 8 kg of granule. Two to three kilograms per square metre on the same lawn is 200-300 kg of dressing, ten to fifteen 20 kg bags. The Scottish Aggregates 20 kg bags print up to 2.5 m² per bag, about 8 kg per square metre on that line. Do not brush chemical lawn sand across the lawn as a leveller. Too much granule burns grass and can stain stone. How to spread the granule stays on how to apply lawn sand. How moss comes back stays on lawn sand for moss. Spike a 40 square metre front lawn and you want 80-120 kg of mix at 2-3 kg per square metre. One 20 kg bag at the printed 2.5 m² dresses about two and a half square metres.

Why builders' sand is the wrong substitute

The RHS autumn-care note says sharp sand, not builders' sharp sand. Builders' sand is often finer, sometimes salty or contaminated with lime and silt, and it can cap a lawn. If the ticket only says sharp sand for mortar, it is the wrong ticket for turf. Spike or hollow-tine first, then brush. Sand on an un-spiked surface sits in a skin. Scottish Aggregates 0/4 mm is graded sand in this capture, not a certified RHS blend. The bullets allow it alone or mixed with loam. If the lawn needs a land drain, another bag of grit will not lift a water table.

What this amazon.co.uk capture actually is

Westland 16 kg at about £20.91, Vitax 4 kg at about £10.95, and Vitax 250 m² at about £31.35 are moss-control granules. Scottish Aggregates B0DYNHLB74 at about £14.99 and B0DYNDGBHZ at about £24.00 are 0/4 mm sand. The £24 title is not twenty bags. Reviews say those sand bags had no nitrates. Use a labelled granule when moss is the week's problem and the turf is established. Use horticultural sharp sand, or these 0/4 mm bags as the sand part, when you have already spiked. Do not put 80 g of Westland into the holes.

Common questions

Can I use chemical lawn sand as a top dressing?
No. Eighty grams per square metre is a mosskiller scatter. A top dressing after spiking is about 2-3 kg per square metre of a loam, sharp sand and compost mix. Putting kilogram rates of a ferrous-sulphate granule on the lawn is how grass burns.
Can I use sharp sand to kill moss?
No. Washed horticultural sand changes drainage when you work it into holes. It does not carry an authorised mosskiller. The RHS says moss returns unless shade, compaction and wet soil change; sand can help the last two only after aeration.
What rate is 2-3 kg per square metre in bags of 20 kg?
A 10 m by 10 m lawn at 2-3 kg needs 200-300 kg, or ten to fifteen 20 kg bags of mix. A 40 square metre plot needs 80-120 kg, or four to six bags. That is why one 20 kg lawn-sand bag is not a whole-garden dressing.
Why does a 20 kg lawn-sand bag say up to 2.5 m²?
That printed line is a heavy dressing claim, about 8 kg per square metre if you take it literally. It is not the chemical 80 g rate. Use it as a warning that the bag is sand, then decide whether you still want grit.
Is builders' sand acceptable on a lawn?
Not as the RHS substitute. The Society specifies horticultural sharp sand, not builders' sharp sand. Mortar sand can be too fine and too dirty for turf. Buy washed garden sand, or accept that a cheap builders' bag is a different product.
Do the Scottish Aggregates bags match the RHS mix?
No. They are 0/4 mm graded sand that you can use alone or mixed with loam. The RHS dressing is about 3:6:1 loam, sharp sand and compost at 2-3 kg per square metre. These bags can be the sand part; they are not the full recipe.
Should I mix sand with loam?
If you are following the RHS autumn dressing, yes: loam and compost sit with the sharp sand. Scottish Aggregates bullets allow the 0/4 mm sand alone or mixed with loam. Straight sand in quantity can sit harsh on the surface; a mix is the usual garden method.
