Lawn sand for moss: what blackening does and does not do

Updated: October 2026

The moss came back after a wet winter, and you want to know whether a bag of lawn sand will finish it. Lawn sand for moss works only when the bag is an authorised mosskiller, and even then the blackening is temporary if the lawn stays shady, wet, or compacted. The [lawn sand comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/lawn-sand) holds prices and stars. This page is the expectation: treat, rake, and change the site, or skip the sand bags that are only grit. Figures are the 20 October 2026 capture, not a moss trial.

Decide whether to treat this moss

The Royal Horticultural Society lists the usual causes: shade, compaction, wet soil, cutting too short, and thin grass. A north-facing strip under a leylandii hedge will grow moss again after any bag. If you will not change those conditions, a mosskiller only buys a few weeks of brown thatch. Treat when the lawn is established, the grass can still fill in, and you can rake and overseed. If the turf is under a year old, Westland's sheet says no. If your boots sink after rain and the surface shines, spike first and read lawn sand vs sharp sand for the kilogram dressing. If the grass is merely speckled and the soil drains, a labelled granule is the week's job. The lawn sand buying guide is the order if you have not picked a form yet.

Use an authorised mosskiller, not a sand bag

The Health and Safety Executive treats lawn sand treatments as plant protection products. Ferrous sulphate sold only as fertiliser is not a mosskiller by itself. Household vinegar and bleach are not approved, and mixing your own iron sulphate is the wrong project on a family lawn. In this capture, Westland 16 kg and both Vitax Green Up packs are the moss-control granules. Reviewers on Westland describe moss turning black. Vitax 4 kg texts say moss died; one prefers another method for large moss. Vitax 250 m² texts call it easy; one household said the second bag failed. Those are review themes, and 4.2 from 268 is not a laboratory result. Both Scottish Aggregates listings are 0/4 mm graded sand. Reviews say no nitrates. Best lawn sand names who each ASIN is for.

What blackening means, and what to do next

Black moss is the treatment working. Westland says moss blackens and that grass darkening is temporary. Do not hose the lawn in a panic. Water in within 48 hours if it stays dry, keep pets off until the surface is dry, then wait. Rake after about two weeks, or in the 7-14 day band on the brand pages. Compost the rakings if you already compost garden waste. Leave the black mat and it smothers the grass. Rake the next morning and you pull living moss. Westland caps you at two applications, 40 days apart. If nothing blackened, check you did not spread the 0/4 mm sand bags at 80 g. Eye contact and swallowing are medical-label events. Follow the label's help line.

Why moss comes back

Shade, compaction and wet soil bring it back. The RHS is plain: a mosskiller is temporary if the conditions stay the same. A leylandii hedge, a packed clay edge, and a lawn that never sees morning sun will refill with moss after the rake. Lift the canopy or thin the hedge. Spike or hollow-tine, then dress with horticultural sand or the RHS mix, not with another 80 g of granule in the holes. Raise the cutting height. A mosskiller is not a full fertiliser programme. A damp, sunless strip may be better as a shade planting or a path. Call a professional for a land drain, a professional-only product, or when the label tells you to get medical help.

Common questions

Will lawn sand stop moss for good?
No. An authorised mosskiller blackens moss for a while. The RHS says it returns if shade, compaction and wet soil stay as they are. Labels also cap how often you may repeat the treatment. Plan a rake, overseed, and a site change, not a permanent kill.
Why has the moss turned black?
That is the ferrous sulphate working, on G212 and on Westland's page. Grass can darken for a short time as well. Wait, then rake. It is not a reason to wash the lawn onto the patio.
Do I have to rake it out?
Yes if you want the grass to fill the gaps. Dead moss left in a mat shades the soil. Which? and the brand sheets put raking after about one to two weeks. Compost the rakings if you already compost garden waste.
Can I use a tub of iron sulphate instead?
Not as a homemade mosskiller. The RHS says iron sulphate belongs inside an approved product. A fertiliser-only tub is not a substitute for Westland or Green Up on this page, and mixing your own dose is how pets and paving get hurt.
Will the Scottish Aggregates bags kill moss?
Not on the evidence in this capture. They are 0/4 mm graded sand. Reviews say no nitrates. Use them after spiking if you wanted grit. Buy a labelled granule if you wanted this week's moss to blacken.
When should I leave the moss and change the site instead?
When the lawn is too dark, too wet, or too compacted for grass, and you will not change those conditions. Treating that strip every spring is a spend, not a cure. A shade planting or a path can be the honest finish.
When do I call a professional?
For a land drain, for a professional-only MAPP product, or if the label says to get medical help after eye contact or swallowing. Also call one when the site is a clay bowl that no 20 kg bag will lift.
