How to apply lawn fertiliser without stripes or scorch

Updated: October 2026

Filling a spreader on the grass is how UK lawns get dark and pale stripes, or a burnt circle where the hopper tipped. How to apply lawn fertiliser is the month on the pack, the rate that pack prints, a spreader filled on a hard surface, and water if rain does not come. Which product to buy stays on the [lawn fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/lawn-fertiliser). This uses the saved amazon.co.uk listings and RHS guidance from 21 October 2026. It is not a turf trial.

Check the month and the ground before you open the bag

The right rate in the wrong month is still the wrong application. Complete 4 in 1 says April to September, after frosts, on established lawns. The Miracle-Gro autumn boxes say September, October or November. A1 says autumn and winter. GreenCare says autumn and early winter. Fast Green’s Amazon bullets name no month. The maker page puts that spray in March to September at 27-0-0, so do not stretch it into November. Skip waterlogged, frosty, or very wet or very dry ground, and do not feed grass that is already scorched. Store leftover summer feed in October. The season argument is on spring versus autumn lawn feed.

Weigh the lawn, then weigh the feed

Where the listing prints 35 g per square metre, that is A1 and the 80 m² autumn box. Eighty square metres at 35 g is 2.8 kg. A handful is only an RHS rule of thumb, not a substitute for a printed rate. Do not copy 35 g onto Fast Green, the Complete 4 in 1 bullets, or the 360 m² autumn Amazon file. The maker label for that large bag does print 35 g per square metre (Miracle-Gro autumn 360 m² label). If you only have the Amazon text, do not invent the setting. GreenCare is 5 ml per litre, measured, not a splash. Pack choice is on the lawn fertiliser buying guide.

Set the spreader on a hard surface

Fill granules on the patio with the shutter closed, then walk two lighter passes at right angles. Do not fill on the lawn. Brush spills up, and do not wash them into a drain. Iron sulphate, which the autumn boxes claim for moss, stains paving, so brush it while it is dry. Weigh one square metre before you commit the bag. The 80 m² autumn reviews describe difficult spreading, a burnt lawn, and grass that died with the moss. The 360 m² Complete bag needs a Miracle-Gro spreader that is not in the box. Fast Green attaches to the hose. The valve is on or off. Do not open the cap over the grass.

Water in, then read the stripes

Water granules in if rain does not come within a day or so. A1’s instructions demand heavy watering. Do not puddle product into hollows. Dark stripes are overlaps or an open shutter on the turn. Pale stripes are misses. The RHS reads regular brown stripes after feeding as overdose. Do not add a second handful on a dark stripe. If grass and moss have already blackened, stop. If the lawn drains into a pond, or large areas are dead, call a groundsman rather than emptying the bag. If the pack names weeds, read weed and feed or a plain fertiliser before the next pass.

Common questions

How much is 35 grams per square metre in practice?
It is 35 g on a scale for each square metre, or 2.8 kg for 80 m² if you are at the maximum. A1 and the 80 m² autumn box print that rate. A handful is only the RHS rule of thumb, not a substitute when the bag prints grams. Do not use 35 g for Fast Green or for the Complete 4 in 1 Amazon bullets, which do not state it.
Should I water before or after?
Spread granules on soil that is not baked or frozen, then water in if rain does not arrive within about a day. A1 reviews describe that watering as heavy. Do not water so hard that the granules wash into drains or onto the patio. Fast Green is watered on as you spray. GreenCare is already diluted in the can at 5 ml per litre.
Why did I get dark and pale stripes?
The dark line is too much product, usually an overlap or an open shutter on the turn. The pale line is a miss. The RHS treats regular brown stripes after feeding as overdose. Calibrate on a test square, then make two lighter passes at right angles. Do not add more feed on the dark stripe to even it up.
Can I fill the spreader on the patio?
Yes. Fill on a hard surface with the shutter closed, and brush spills up. Do not fill on the lawn, where a tip becomes a burnt circle. Iron-sulphate granules from the autumn boxes can mark paving, so get them off the stone while they are dry. Do not rinse them into a gully.
How do I apply a hose-end bottle that is only on or off?
Attach Fast Green, walk at a steady pace, and overlap the fan on purpose because reviewers describe the pattern as uneven. You cannot dial a weaker mix on the valve these reviews describe. Do not open the cap to check the level over the grass. The stated cover is up to 100 m² from 1 litre, and a lot of liquid left in the bottle means the fan never reached the grass.
When should I stop and not put any more on?
Stop if the month is outside the label, if the soil is frosty, soggy or baked, if you have already hit the printed rate, or if grass has burnt or turned black with the moss. Stop and get a professional if the treated area drains into a pond, or if large parts of the lawn are dead after the application. More product is not a correction.
