Topsoil vs compost for a grave

Updated: October 2026

You already have permission, and the two bags look similar: dark, bagged, and sold for beds. Topsoil vs compost on a grave is still one choice. Use topsoil when the cemetery has asked you to soil a surface, a border skim, or a repair. Use multi-purpose compost when you are planting a short season of flowers in a border or a trough the rules allow. Our [Grave soil](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/grave-soil) comparison holds four topsoils and two composts, none of them labelled grave soil. The Products Compared editorial team updated this on 21 October 2026. Prices are the raw-file shelf prices in GBP. We did not lab-test the bags. They are not the same bag

Topsoil is a mineral surface. The RHS describes bagged topsoil as the layer you bring in where soil is poor or missing, for beds, borders, and lawns. Compost, in the garden trade, is an amendment: it feeds a planting and it can dry out faster than a mineral soil. Homebuilding’s compost-versus-topsoil piece makes the same split, and it notes that even a better topsoil can still contain weeds. Neither material is weed-proof.

When the job is a fill

The condition is narrow. The cemetery has asked for soil on a surface, a border skim, or a repair, and you are allowed to bring it. Then the bag should say topsoil. A garden depth is the wrong template. RHS pages aimed at home gardens talk about roughly 10 cm under a lawn and about 20 cm for a new bed. Our notes use BS 3882:2015 as the traded-topsoil standard, and none of these listings shows either year. Do not lay 20 cm of topsoil because a garden article did. Measure the skim you were allowed.

When the job is flowers

The condition is a short season in a border or a trough the rules allow. Then multi-purpose compost is the planting mix, and topsoil alone will not behave like a potting compost. Munnie’s 4.6 from 2,045 reviews does not make it a levelling product. Litres and the peat check, in buying order, are on the grave soil buying guide.

Which of these six bags is which

Four titles are topsoil and two are multi-purpose compost. Organic on the Laeto topsoils does not turn them into compost. Laeto 40 litres is the organic planting mix with repeated smell and mould comments in the review sample. The recommendation is topsoil for an agreed fill, compost for an agreed planting, and neither bag if the office is doing the surface itself.

Common questions

Is topsoil or compost the right material for a grave?
It depends on the job the cemetery has allowed. Topsoil is for a surface, a border skim, or a repair they have asked you to soil. Multi-purpose compost is for a short season of flowers in a border or a trough. There is no single grave-soil material among these six amazon.co.uk bags, and none of the titles says grave. If the office levels and turfs the plot, the right purchase is no bag.
Can I fill a dip with multi-purpose compost?
No. Compost used as a deep fill slumps, and council notes that talk about topping up then talk about topsoil and seed, not a planting mix. Munnie at about 16p a litre and Laeto compost at about 29p a litre are cheaper than some topsoils and still the wrong type for a dip. A 4.6 star line does not change the title. If a thin retail fill is explicitly allowed, choose a bag that says topsoil and measure the depth.
Can I mix the two on a cemetery plot?
Not as a raised-bed recipe. On a grave you were allowed one job: a skim of topsoil, or compost in a border or trough. A mix, a wooden edge, or bark is a different project, and kerbs and chippings are commonly banned. Compost in a border that already has soil is a planting job. It is not a way to rebuild a sunken lawn grave.
Does organic topsoil behave like compost?
No. Laeto’s topsoil bullets say organic top soil for beds, lawns, and seeding. That wording does not make the bag a multi-purpose compost, and it does not mean peat-free. The compost in this set is the bag titled multi-purpose compost, Munnie or Laeto 40 litres. Use the product type on the comparison, not the colour of the crumb in the photograph.
Will either material stop weeds?
No. Bagged topsoil can still contain weed seeds, which is the point Homebuilding makes about even a better grade, and our files do not show a weed-free test. Compost will not seal a grave against weeds either. A thin layer over roofing felt, or a cover of chippings, is a separate idea that many cemeteries forbid. Plan to weed a border you are allowed to plant. Do not buy either bag as a weed barrier.
What if the cemetery asks for peat-free?
Then none of these six qualifies on the title. Westland and Growmoor do not mention peat. Laeto says organic. Munnie says it helps reduce the use of peat. Hedge End asks visitors to use peat-free compost where possible, which is a local request, not a reason to relabel these bags. The England retail peat ban was announced in 2022 and, on the RHS and Peat Free Partnership notes we used, was not in force. Look for a bag that says peat-free, outside this set.
Where do bark, gravel, and woodchip fit?
They do not, on this decision. The choice is topsoil or multi-purpose compost. Bark, gravel, woodchip, and clay pebbles are a third product type, and lawn-grave rules often ban chippings and similar covers. A spike vase is a container question, not a soil question. If the regulations ban them, a bag of bark will be removed however tidy it looks. Stay with the material the office named.
