Best soil for a grave: who each bag is for

Updated: October 2026

There is no best grave soil in this set of six. You are comparing ordinary topsoil and multi-purpose compost on amazon.co.uk, after the cemetery has said what you may do. Our [Grave soil](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/grave-soil) page scores those listings for a liftable bag and marks a top pick and a best value from that scoring. That mark is not a lab result and not a cemetery trial. This page says who each bag is for, and who should leave it. The Products Compared editorial team updated this on 21 October 2026 from the saved listings. Prices are those GBP shelf prices. We did not test the soil. No dedicated winner on these pages

Every title in the six is a garden bag. Growmoor, Westland, and the two Laeto topsoils are topsoil. Munnie and the Laeto 40 litre bag are multi-purpose compost. None says grave or cemetery. None shows a BS 3882 certificate on the listing. A star line is what buyers wrote about beds, pots, and lawns, not about a burial plot.

Topsoil bags, and who should skip them

Growmoor enriched topsoil, 25 litres, is £10.95, about 44p a litre, listed at 9.6 kg, with 4.4 from 325 reviews. It is the top pick on the main comparison for a liftable skim. Skip it if you need a peat-free bag or a feed analysis. Westland top soil, 20 litres, is £10.85, about 54p a litre, listed at 9.07 kg, with 4.5 from 481 reviews. It is the dearest litre in the set, so skip it when you need more volume. The buying order, if you have not chosen topsoil or compost yet, is on the grave soil buying guide.

Compost bags, and who should skip them

Munnie is £9.34, about 16p a litre if that price is for 60 litres, listed at 14.9 kg, with 4.6 from 2,045 reviews. It is the best value on the main comparison for that price and star line, as a planting mix. Use it for flowers in a permitted border or trough. Skip it as a dip fill, and skip it if the cemetery requires peat-free. Laeto’s 40 litre compost is £11.49, about 29p a litre, listed at 13.6 kg. Skip it for a smell-sensitive visit, and do not pour it into a dip.

If you wanted a dedicated grave soil

A search can still show a title such as Compo Sana grave soil, 3 x 20 litres. We saw that listing and did not confirm a GBP price, so it is not one of the six and we will not invent a cost.

Common questions

Which of these six bags is the best soil for a grave?
None of them is a grave soil. The top pick on the main comparison is Growmoor 25 litre topsoil at £10.95, about 44p a litre, 4.4 from 325 reviews, because it is a liftable topsoil with a plausible 9.6 kg weight. That score is a listing fit for a skim the cemetery has allowed. It is not a burial-ground test, and one review that mentions a grave does not make the bag a cemetery product. If your job is flowers, the topsoil pick is the wrong type.
Is Growmoor a grave soil because one review mentions a grave?
No. One of 44 review texts says the buyer used this soil on a grave and then saw fewer mushrooms and no seeds. The listing does not say grave or cemetery. The other reviews talk about lawn gaps, reseeding, stones, and clay. Treat the grave sentence as one person’s plot, not as evidence for yours. The bullets that you can check are 25 litres, lime- and chalk-free, and no peat line.
Why do the two Laeto topsoil listings share the same star line?
Both show 4.2 from 2,061, and the first 50 review texts match, including reviews that name 35 litres times two. You cannot tell which ASIN those buyers received. The single bag prints 3.63 kg against a 35 litre title. The two-pack prints 25 kg and a volume field of 35 litres against a two-bag title. Several texts say the bag looked nearer 20 to 25 litres, and one weighed bag was 12.3 kg. Read them as one shared sample with a short-fill warning.
Is Munnie the best value because it is £9.34 and 4.6 stars?
It is the best value in this set on those two figures, if £9.34 is the price for 60 litres, which is about 16p a litre. The star line is 4.6 from 2,045. It is still multi-purpose compost, with a pack count of 2, peat-reduction wording rather than peat-free, and reviews that mention split inner bags and a mixed-brand two-pack. Use that value for a permitted planting. Do not use it to decide a top-up.
Should I skip Laeto compost because of smell and mould?
Skip it if a farmyard smell or mould would be a problem at the cemetery, or if you expected a peat-free mark the bullets do not give. Several of 50 review texts describe that smell, flies, mould in pots, and plants that died, and one mentions glass or plastic. Others describe a fine texture and reordered it. At £11.49 for 40 litres, about 29p a litre, it is a planting mix you should open before you travel, not a fill for a sunken grave.
Where is a peat-free bag in this set?
There is not one on the titles. Westland and Growmoor do not mention peat. Laeto says organic. Munnie says the blend helps reduce the use of peat. Reviewers sometimes call the Laeto compost peat-free, and another says the bag had no such mark. Those lines are reviews, not the bullet text. If the cemetery asks for peat-free, leave these six.
