Fertiliser sticks buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A fertiliser sticks buying guide should help you rule products out before a vague "all plants" title reaches your basket. On the nine-product amazon.co.uk shelf in our [fertiliser sticks comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/fertiliser-sticks), some listings name a precise plant job, while others omit nutrient figures, dose instructions or a dependable pack count. Recorded prices ran from about £5 to £15 on 19 October 2026, but conflicting quantities make cost per stick unsafe to calculate for several packs. Use five checks in order: plant job, visible analysis, dose, duration and honest quantity. Reviews can then support that choice; they should not make it for you.

Match the stick to the plant job first

Begin with what you actually grow rather than the broadest promise. A green foliage plant, a fern, a fruiting tomato and a pot of herbs do not create the same buying brief. On this shelf, Substral explicitly names green plants, Jobe's names ferns and palms, Devonia offers separate tomato-and-vegetable and citrus-and-fruit packs, and Substral Naturen names herbs and potted plants. These titles do not prove performance, but they give you a more relevant starting point than "indoor and outdoor plants". Do not substitute solely because two products are both stick-shaped. For a named shortlist by job, see the best fertiliser sticks. If you grow mainly indoors, the houseplant fertiliser sticks guide adds the seasonal and compost checks that a product page cannot answer.

Look for a visible analysis, or accept the uncertainty

UK fertiliser labels conventionally present declared nutrients in the order nitrogen, phosphate and potash, but an Amazon mixing field is not by itself a complete statutory declaration. Treat it as listing information to be checked against the delivered pack. In this set, Devonia all-purpose prints 4-1-5, Substral green plants prints 10:7:9:2, Jobe's prints 16:2:6 and Devonia citrus prints 1:1:1. None of those figures was independently tested for this comparison. The fourth number in Substral's 10:7:9:2 field is not explained in the stored listing. Do not assume it represents magnesium or another specific nutrient. Five listings provide no NPK or mixing-ratio numbers in the stored data: Devonia tomato, Go Garden, Hiemible, the generic 4-inch sticks and Substral Naturen. "Natural", "organic-mineral" or an Organics brand name does not fill that gap.

Check dose, duration and what is actually in the pack

A usable dose is more valuable than a long list of compatible plants. Substral Naturen is the only row here that prints a pot-size dose in the listing: one to five sticks according to pot size, with two per plant in a balcony box and a repeat interval of two months. Go Garden says up to 30 days. Jobe's, Hiemible, the generic 4-inch listing and Substral Naturen describe roughly 60 days or two months. Three Devonia packs claim up to 12 weeks. These are seller claims rather than timed trials, so use them to set a reminder, not as a guarantee that every pot receives nutrients at a constant rate. Devonia all-purpose says 20 sticks in the title and nine in an item field. Devonia tomato says 18 in the title and unit count but 30 in another field. The generic 4-inch product states no stick count at all. Never resolve a conflict by choosing the larger number, and do not calculate price per stick until the seller confirms the pack. Insert steps are covered in how to use fertiliser sticks.

Understand what stars and organic wording do not prove

Jobe's has 4.3 stars from 4,359 ratings and 50 stored texts marked United Kingdom. Substral green plants has 4.5 from 3,240, yet the stored texts come from Germany, France, Belgium, Spain and Sweden. Go Garden's 50 stored texts are marked India. Devonia all-purpose says 100% organic, Go Garden says natural and Substral Naturen says suitable for organic farming, but no certificate number appears in the stored files. Jobe's brand field says Jobe's Organics while its bullets do not state an organic claim. If certified status matters to you, ask for the actual certification and label rather than relying on a title, brand or search phrase.

Common questions

What should I check first when buying fertiliser sticks?
Match the product to the plant job first. Then look for a visible nutrient declaration, a dose for your pot, a duration you can diary and a pack count that agrees across the listing. Only after those checks should rating averages and price influence the decision.
What if a fertiliser-stick listing gives no NPK?
Do not invent a balance from words such as all-purpose, natural or tomato. If nutrient emphasis matters, obtain a clear image of the physical label or choose a listing with a verifiable declaration. A missing analysis may be acceptable for convenience, but it remains an informed compromise.
How many fertiliser sticks should I use per pot?
Use the directions for that exact product. Among these nine listings, only Substral Naturen prints a one-to-five-stick dose by pot size. Do not copy that scale to another brand, because stick size, formulation and release period can differ.
Does organic wording mean the product is certified?
Not necessarily. Several stored listings use words such as organic, natural or organic-mineral, but no certificate number appears in the available data. If certification affects your purchase, check the delivered label and the named certifying scheme rather than relying on marketing text.
Can I compare these packs by price per stick?
Only where the quantity is consistent. Several listings disagree between title, item, pack and unit fields, and one gives no stick count. The recorded £5–£15 shelf range describes purchase prices, but a per-stick calculation would create false precision for conflicting packs.
Are all the reviews from UK customers?
No. Jobe's has a stored UK sample, while Substral green-plant reviews span several European countries and Go Garden's sample is marked India. Some products have only one UK text or no review body. Check review origin as well as the headline star count.
