Is peat compost banned in the UK?

Updated: October 2026

You have heard that peat compost was banned in 2024, and the bag in your hand still does not say peat-free. Is peat compost banned in the UK? Not by a statute that is in force. Defra announced in 2022 that amateur sales in England would end by 2024. The RHS says there is currently no legislation banning horticultural peat. You still have to read the sack. This page is that distinction. It does not rank the five bags. Prices stay on the [bio compost comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/bio-compost). Products Compared used Defra's 2022 announcement, the RHS, the Peat Free Partnership timeline, and the Environment Agency's compost framework.

What was announced

On 27 August 2022 Defra published a news announcement: the sale of horticultural peat to amateur gardeners in England would be banned by 2024. Bagged retail growing media were described as 70% of the peat sold in the UK. That 70% is Defra's figure from 2022, not a market size for 2026. The deadline passed, and retailers still sell compost. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland were not folded into that English press notice. The Peat Free Partnership records that January 2025 arrived with no retail ban in force across the four nations.

What is in force

The RHS states that there is currently no legislation banning horticultural peat. Banned in England overclaims the 2022 news. The Environment Agency's compost resource framework, in force for England from 20 October 2025, is also an England document. Wales and Northern Ireland were not switched onto it at the same moment. If the mix is not what the listing described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies. It does not create a peat ban.

Three marks that get confused

Peat-free has to be said. The RHS says organic and environmentally friendly do not mean peat-free. None of the five listings prints peat-free. BioBizz's blend article says All Mix contains peat-based components. That comparison is on Light Mix versus All Mix. Soil Association Approved means an inspected input. The bare word organic often means natural materials, not that approval. PAS 100 is a producer specification, not a consumer organic logo. England's framework adds a plastics limit of 0.06% m/m for compost that meets end of waste. That is not a test of these five bags. The Responsible Sourcing Scheme is a voluntary A to E grade. None of these files shows a letter.

What these listings show

Both Light Mix listings and All Mix say organic soil potting compost. DIVCHI says organic enriched. Westland's 8 litre bag does not say organic. None shows a Soil Association symbol, a PAS 100 claim, or peat-free. If you need an inspected input, leave the set. Melcourt's SylvaGrow Organic is outside these ASINs. Litres and feed are on the organic compost buying guide. The conditional pick inside this set is on best organic compost.

Common questions

Is it illegal to sell peat compost in the UK?
No statute in force makes amateur peat compost illegal across the UK. Defra announced on 27 August 2022 that sales to amateur gardeners in England would be banned by 2024. That was a government news announcement, not an Act. The RHS says there is currently no legislation banning horticultural peat. A bag can still be sold. You should still read whether it says peat-free.
Does the ban differ in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland?
There is not a single in-force retail ban to differ about. The 2022 announcement was about England. England's later compost resource framework is also an England rule, and Wales and Northern Ireland were not moved onto it at the same time. A private member's bill is not a ban in any nation. Check the sack you are buying rather than a UK-wide date you remember from 2024.
If a bag says organic, is it peat-free?
Not by that word alone. The RHS says organic does not mean peat-free, and that a bag which does not say peat-free most likely is not. Garden Organic treats the word organic as a possible description of natural materials, not as an approval. In this set the organic titles still do not print peat-free, and they do not show a Soil Association symbol.
What does Soil Association Approved mean on compost?
It means the input has been through Soil Association inspection and may carry the symbol. It is not a synonym for the word organic on a product title. None of the five listings here shows the symbol, so none is described on this page as approved. Peat-free and Soil Association Approved are separate claims. A bag can have one, both, or neither.
Does PAS 100 mean the amazon bag is plastic-free and organic?
No. PAS 100 is a specification for composted materials used by producers. England's framework adds a plastics limit of 0.06% m/m for compost that meets end-of-waste rules from 20 October 2025. That is not a laboratory result for these ASINs, and it is not an organic certificate. Do not apply the limit to a retail listing that never claims PAS 100.
What is the Responsible Sourcing Scheme grade?
A voluntary score from A to E across seven criteria. The RHS directs gardeners to it when they are choosing peat-free compost. The logo does not replace the words peat-free, and it is not a Soil Association mark. These five amazon.co.uk files do not show a grade, so you cannot look one up from the star row. Read a letter only if it is printed on the bag you bought.
What should I do if the bag is not as described?
Use the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If the sack is the wrong size, or it misses a peat-free or organic claim the listing actually made, you can reject goods that are not as described, normally within 30 days. Keep the listing and the label. That remedy does not apply to a hope the title never stated, such as a certifier none of these pages named.

Organic wording is not a certifier. All Mix's peat line is the maker's blend article, not a test of the bag in your hand. No ban on amateur peat sales is in legislation.
