Autumn lawn fertiliser buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in the garden aisle in October with two bags that look almost the same, and one of them is a summer weed-and-feed. An autumn lawn fertiliser buying guide has one job: tell you which numbers on the pack matter before you compare brands. The [autumn lawn fertiliser comparison](/hub/fertiliser-soil-and-bark-mulch/autumn-lawn-fertiliser) holds the amazon.co.uk listings and prices. This page is the set of checks. If the lawn already looks fine after summer, the Royal Horticultural Society says most lawns recover without a feed, so the right purchase can be none. Peter F. checked those listings in October 2026. This is not a lawn trial.

What an autumn feed is for

An autumn feed supports roots and cold hardiness, not a flush of soft leaf. Nitrogen pushes green growth. Phosphorus, the middle number, is tied to roots. Potassium, the last number, is what autumn packs lean on. The RHS puts autumn lawn feeds on moist soil from September until about mid-October. You do not have to feed a lawn that came through summer in decent shape. Feed a lawn that looks thin after a dry summer, or one you have scarified. A lawn that sits wet all winter, or that shows brown patches you suspect are fungal, needs a groundsman, not another bag.

The numbers on the pack

Read the three numbers as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. In this comparison, the granular Miracle-Gro listings that declare an analysis use NPK 6-5-10. Miracle-Gro's own UK table puts its spring and summer Complete 4 in 1, which is not in this set, at 14-0-5 and limits that bag to April to September. Where a listing in this set does not print an NPK, treat the analysis as not stated. The EverGreen 12.6 kg listing is in that position: moss control and seaweed are on the bullets, and the ratio is not. If you need the ratio on the page you are buying, choose a listing that shows it. Miracle-Gro's UK autumn page caps its product at 35 g per square metre and two applications a year. A handful per square metre is an RHS rule of thumb, and the RHS still tells you to follow the packet.

Moss, coverage, and format

Iron sulphate is the moss ingredient on the granular Miracle-Gro packs in this set. The listing language is that moss blackens within about seven days and is raked after about two weeks. Iron stains paving, so you sweep spillages rather than hosing them into a drain. If you do not want moss control, you do not want that iron. The GreenCare liquids in this set claim cold-pressed seaweed and do not claim a moss kill. Coverage has to match a lawn you measured. An 80 m² box is a small lawn. A 360 m² bag bought for a 60 m² patch leaves you storing iron granules. Children and pets stay off iron granules until the lawn has been watered in and has dried, where that sentence is printed.

What you will pay in this set

These are shelf prices from the amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison. The 80 m² granules sit at £12.29, £12.48, £14.59 and £14.98. The 12.6 kg bags are £24.00 and £24.75. The liquids are £12.95, £19.95 and £39.95. A rule of thumb on the title coverage: about 7 pence per square metre for the £24 bag over 360 m², against about 16 pence for the £12.48 box over 80 m². The best autumn lawn feed page attaches each listing to a lawn size.

A checklist before you buy

Work down the pack in this order. The season should be September to November, not April to September. The NPK should be printed; in this set that analysis is 6-5-10. Moss control should be on the label only if you want iron. Coverage should match the lawn you measured. If any line fails, leave the bag. How you then put the granules down is on the how to apply autumn lawn feed page, and the black-versus-burnt distinction is on the moss control page.

Common questions

What NPK should an autumn lawn feed show?
In this set, the granular listings that print an analysis show NPK 6-5-10, which is lower in nitrogen than Miracle-Gro's spring and summer 14-0-5. The RHS describes autumn feeds as richer in potassium and phosphorus than summer feeds. Other brands differ: Aftercut's autumn bag is 4-5-15. If the listing you are looking at has no ratio, the analysis is not stated, and you should not guess it.
Do I need to feed the lawn at all?
Often you do not. The RHS says most lawns recover from summer without feeding, and that you feed when the grass needs a boost. A thin lawn after drought, or a lawn you have just scarified, is the usual case for a bag. A lawn that is already dense can wait until spring.
How do I know if 80 m² is enough?
Measure the lawn. Length in metres times width in metres is the area, and you ignore the patio. An 80 m² box covers a small lawn once at the label rate. A 20 m by 15 m lawn is 300 m², which is a large-bag job. If the lawn is only 70 m², the small box still wastes less product than a 12.6 kg sack you must store. Granules in this set are the packs that state 6-5-10 and iron. The liquids are the no-iron path, and they will not blacken moss.
Can I trust a 5-star liquid with one review?
A single five-star review is one person's sentence, and on these listings that sentence is cut off in the Amazon reviews. It does not tell you the NPK, the true bottle size, or how the lawn looked in March. Prefer the review counts in the hundreds when you are judging whether a granule behaves, and read the specification block before you trust a litre claim.
What if the title says 5 L and the specification says 10,000 ml?
Treat the size as unresolved. On the GreenCare listings the title, the unit count and the item weight do not agree: one title says 5 L, another says 10 L, and the specification fields still say 10,000 ml and 5 kg. Shared bullets that mention 500 m² or 1,000 m² are not a measurement of the bottle you will receive. Check the pack when it arrives, and do not plan the dose from the conflicting line.
