Twilight switch LED load: 10 A is not the LED rating

Updated: October 2026

The photocell in your hand says 10 A or 1000 W, and the lamps on the wall are LED. Twilight switch LED load is the check that stops you treating that headline as the LED rating. Current, tungsten watts and LED watts are three different lines, and most listings here do not print the third. 10 A and 1000 W are not the LED rating

10 A is current. On a nominal 230 V supply it is a large figure, and it is still not a count of LED watts. 1000 W beside an incandescent or maximum line is a tungsten-style load unless the same sentence says LED. If that LED line is missing, do not promote the amp line or the tungsten line into an LED rating. BS EN IEC 60669-2-1 covers electronic household switches up to 250 V and 16 A, including control by light. That note does not assign a wattage to any ASIN here. Electraline's cell cites EN 60669-2-1. The citation does not mean your LED total is covered.

What a complete label prints

LED drivers are not a filament. Knightsbridge's 10 A pattern in these sources is about 300 W of LED against 1000 W incandescent. A different Knightsbridge unit prints 500 W incandescent and 300 W LED. Do not merge those into a claim that every 1000 W photocell is 300 W of LED. Danlers prints up to 500 W of LED against 1500 W resistive. Those units are examples of a split. The LED figure on a split label is the lower one. None of that transfers onto a bullet that only says 1000 W.

What these listings actually state

Electraline's table states 10 A at 240 V. The wattage cell states 240 W and a bullet states 1000 W. Neither says LED. Another listing states a bare 1000 W and 10 A at 220 V. A 120 V four-pack states 600 W incandescent, which is the wrong lamp type and the wrong supply. Flylin's table states 200 W and 1 A, with no LED line. The wide-range IP54 body prints no wattage, which is n/a. One United Kingdom text reports about 9 V at the lamp from 12 V on the 12–48 V button. That drop is not an LED wattage.

Why the lamp flickers at dusk

One cause is optical. The lamp, or a reflection from a cover or a pale wall, lights the photocell. The load drops out, the eye sees dark, and the lamp returns. A forum thread describes an LED flashing about every 20 seconds until a clear cover was removed. Where to point the eye is on how to install a twilight switch. The other cause is the gap. If on lux and off lux are the same, or only one level is printed, the cell can chatter as the sky crosses it. On at 10–20 lux and off at 30–60 lux is the anti-flicker pattern, printed here on a 120 V listing, so it illustrates the gap and remains the wrong voltage. Electraline's delay is n/a. Moving the eye does not create an LED wattage the listing never printed.

What to do with the number you have

Add the LED watts you are fitting, including the driver and anything else on that switched live. Compare the sum with an LED line on the photocell. If there is no LED line, stop. Do not fill the gap with 10 A, with 1000 W, or with 240 W from a cell that never says LED. This capture does not contain a minimum load. Which listing also has a review line is on the best twilight switch page. A 120 V incandescent wattage stays tied to 120 V.

Common questions

Can I put LED lamps on a 10 A or 1000 W twilight switch?
Only if the listing prints an LED wattage and your lamps fit under it. 10 A is current. 1000 W, unless it says LED, is not your LED budget. If this file has no LED line, the listing does not tell you. Trade labels put the LED figure well below the incandescent figure on the same device.
Why is the LED wattage lower than the incandescent figure?
LED drivers are not a filament lamp. Labels that split them, such as about 300 W LED against 1000 W incandescent, or up to 500 W LED against 1500 W resistive, are showing that. Use the lower figure for LEDs. The higher figure does not become available because each lamp draws fewer watts.
Why does the lamp flicker at dusk?
Often the lamp or a reflection is lighting the photocell, so it switches off and on as its own light comes and goes. A missing gap between on lux and off lux does the same as the sky dims. A clear cover over the cell is one way to create that reflection. Check position and the lux gap before you condemn the lamp.
Will a delay or a lux gap stop that?
A lower on level and a higher off level reduce hunting at dusk. A delay of several seconds ignores headlights and brief cloud. Both have to be printed. A delay with no seconds is n/a. Neither fix creates an LED wattage the listing never stated.
When is flicker a position fault rather than an overload?
When the lamp, a pale wall, or a cover can shine into the sensor, and the flashing follows that light at dusk. These listings mostly do not state an LED wattage, so a 1000 W headline cannot prove overload. Move the eye first. If you still need a rating, use a label that prints LED watts.
